Good Portland overview
Mon, Aug 30  11:00 AM btaylor82 Female 20-29 Domestic Tourist(s) Individual
This was a good chance to walk around and "taste" Portland for someone who did not have a lot of time to spend in the city. It was a combination of sightseeing, history, and delicious bites. Our tour guide, John, was great. Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He also gave good restaurant suggestions. The only thing I was slightly suspicious of was if MaineFoodie had some sort of deal with any of the food providers, to entice us to come back and buy. One location we went to sell products that we have in ample supply in markets in my own hometown (nowhere near Maine), so it was hard to get excited about that. Otherwise, it was a very good experience!

If you are a true foodie, don't waste your time or money on this tour. We were signed up for the Culinary Tour via trolley bus as well, however, it was cancelled with less than an hour's notice on the same day that it was booked for. While our money was refunded we felt that the 2nd tour, the walking tour, that we had already booked and paid for on the following day, should have been complimentary. We heard two versions of the story as to why it was cancelled with virtually no notice. We were the only two that were signed up for the tour and the other reason was they couldn't get a trolley bus. While Zerve guarantees the tour will run rain or shine, we were very disappointed with our treatment. The people running and giving the tour are very friendly and nice, but it severely lacks the professionalism of other city tours. It costs the same price and San Fran and Chicago tours which we have very favourably recommended from previous reviews. On the Portland Tour you'd be lucky if you got anywhere near $5.00 worth of food value. While Portland is a wonderful foodie City and we love to visit, they are not sophisticated enough to handle a true foodie tour.

Very Enjoyable Tour

On Wednesday, August 25, our friends from Arizona and my husband and I had the pleasure of taking the Old Port Culinary Tour. It was a miserable, rainy day and still we had a great time! My husband and I have only lived here four years and we learned so much about Portland history and some new stores for us. Our tour guide, Harold., was excellent. We plan on taking the other tours. . .such a neat idea. Thanks!

My wife and I enjoyed the 2 1/2 hour tour. Our guide was knowlegable and fun. The pace was good and the little samples were fun, but would have like to have had a little more of everything we tasted. I would recommend it to anyone with the time.

A "Must Do"

Good time!! 2-1/2 hour walking tour packed with info on everything from fish frames to truffles with "snap". Bit of history, bit of architecture, tasty tidbits. Wear sneakers, carry a water bottle to wash down the tasty treats. Be prepared to walk upstairs, downstairs, and "all around the town". Extremely knowlegeable and entertaining guide. Made me want to re-visit Portland. Got our money's worth. Thanks!!

A tour of the finer things in life.

This is a great little tour with great snacks along the way. Very informative narration of some of the finer treats that Portland has to offer. I highly recommend this tour for the great food and beverage. Not only do you get a nice tour, but you get some places pointed out that you should not miss when you are in town.

High price

The tour guide Ginger was very good. Learned alot about the history of Portland. I guess the price of $42.00 per person in our opinion was very high priced. The food samples were very limited for the price..should have included aleast a light lunch and drink for $82.00.

My tour guide Pat was absolutely wonderful... She not only had tidbits of information about the food we had but the city in general. Being a history buff myself this only added to an already great experience. T A Honey

Our tour guide, although a bit corny, was knowledable and entertaining. We enjoyed the food tastings throughout the tour, but had hoped there would be a few restaurants included (in addition to the shops/markets). Our group was rather large that day (17 people, which we think is larger than the usual size). Overall, it's a nice way to explore the Old Port and sample food and beverages along the way.

Very disappointed...we had already been in most of the stops...was hoping to visit behind the scenes in stops....several places we were not greeted and spoken to by clerks. Could have had a very nice lunch experience on our own for $41.00 each

I had a free day in Portland before meeting my travel group and decided to take the Old Port Culinary Tour. It was a great decision, the tour was fun and informative. I saw parts of the Old Port area that I would not have otherwise seen, and got to taste lots of great food, not to mention meeting some nice people. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Portland.

Friendly Guide, not much substance to the Tour

The idea for this tour is fantastic! I was very exicted to go. However the places that we were brought to were obviously too busy to interact with the 'foodie' tour. I never felt any real connection to the proprietors or their wares as I felt as if we were in the way of other customers. But, the biggest disappointment was with the samples provided; they were simply too small. Overall, I had a fine time and did enjoy walking around the town. I do think that with some improvement this tour could be GREAT.

Not enough for lunch, Mostly deserts

We went on a tour with my elderly mother, my husband and 14 year old son on a tour which started at 11:00. With our group was another couple with a 9 month old baby in a stroller. We arrived a couple of minutes late which we had arranged with the tour group as we came from another tour. The other couple with child arrived about 20 minutes late setting us behind. We started with a tour of a lobster house which was great! We got a cracker with smoke trout which was terrific. Then we went on to a cheese shop having to slow our pace for the stroller couple. At the cheese shop, the owner gave two samples of cheese and was a good speaker. However, upon leaving stroller couple had to reorganize with baby, and we had a lengthy weight. We went on to the chocolate shop and had a few tiny samples. Stroller couple was in the bathroom changing the baby's diaper so the tour guide told them we would go ahead after we mentioned that we had a tight schedule. We then went on to another bakery where we had a piece of a moon pie. Stroller couple never showed up. We then went to a bar where the tour guide gave us two beer samples. That was the end of the tour. Somehow, I had thought that we would have lobster rolls which I thought had been on the menu. I had thought that for the price, this would serve at lunch, but it was kind of like a Costco sampler day with only a few samples mostly being desert. I would go again, but I would check the menu again. This tour would be better going after lunch or dinner rather than from 11:00 to 1:30 in the day. Also, I think that there should be a rule for people who can't keep up. Stroller couple really detracted from the tour as we spent so much time waiting for them.
