Insightful, fun goodies-filled tour!
Wed, Aug 19  9:30 AM HydePark Male 60-69 Local Unspecified
We learned a lot throught the personal interaction of the merchants Diane introduced us to----about the source of the produce, how it is best-prepared at home. Lots of time for questions and sampling. As a local, I was shown "insider" info I'd never seen. We also enjoyed a stroll down 3rd. Street to sample/learn from some of the excellent restaurants. Truly fun, entertaining, and educational! I'll bring my out-of town guests on this tour!

JUST DO IT!

This is our 2nd Melting Pot tour - did the Farmers Market/3rd Street one about a month ago and loved them both! Lisa and Diane do a fantastic job as hosts and guides providing architectural history of the surroundings as well as fun tidbits about the establishments we visited. It's also a plus to meet the store/restaurant owners and get to hear it all in their own words. The tastings are nicely paced - savory, savory sweet - throughout the 3 hour tour. They take you into these pockets of Los Angeles and introduce you to places and flavors you may not otherwise frequent or experience. Now they just need one for the west side or Chinatown or evenings . . . ah, the possibilities.

This was so much fun! I have done these types of tours in other cities and am so glad that LA has one now. Diane, our guide was very knowledgable and the tastings were a good cross sections of the food at the Farmer's Market. I will definitely recommend this to family and friends, locals and out of towners!!

I treated myself to this walking tour as I was unfamiliar with that particular part of town. I am glad I did. A great way to get to know that area with wonderful, knowledgeable tour guides and plenty of sampling along the way and a chance to meet most of the store owners who provided us detailed information on their shops and their products. An unforgettable experience and one that I will do again with friends and family

This is a great tour, excellent tour maestra, very knowledgeable, friendly, shows you a different face of L.A. At the beginning I wasn't very confident on taking the tour, but now I'm glad I did, I took another tour after this one and it was not even close... hope they do more tours, variety wise... A+ Recommended!!!

Diane was great and entertaining. It was a nice warm day but no one in our group seemed to mind. We had a leisurely stroll and visited some nice restaurants. I live in Los Angeles and I wasn't aware that these nice restaurants existed. Considering a comparable San Diego 'foodie' tour is $75.00, this tour was a good value. When I get some time I will take the Pasadena tour also.

When you go to other countries you take their tours to learn more about that region. This is an excellent tour for people who want to learn about their own backyard. I learned a lot and had a fun time tasting all the great food.

The Melting Pot Food Tasting Tour of Old Pasadena was a fantastic investment I made while I was visiting Pasadena and San Marino in August of 2009. It was a Sunday, and I would have been at loose ends, bored, and homesick were it not for this delicious excursion! We stopped not only to taste wonderful dishes at various restaurants and eateries, but as well to visit places that offered other wondrous sensory experiences. The Soap Kitchen and the Bird Pick tea shop were both just amazing! The Tour Operators were experts on the area and its history, so while we walked we learned snippits of the unusual history behind the streets, the buildings, and people - recent and historical. What an amazing place! I'll be back in Pasadena and San Marino again for my work, and I'll be back for the food, the history and the eclectic surroundings. I met other visitors in the tour group and we were all friends by the end of the three hours. The walking pace was comfortable, and the Tour Operators Trish and Lisa were always considerate of our needs for water, restrooms, time to shop and so on. The night after the tour, my brother (also from far away) and I met at one the restaurants I had been introduced to on the Tour, and we enjoyed a great meal at the Cafe Bizou. I can't wait to get back to Old Pasadena!

Loved our guide Diane! She was fabulous and extremely knowledgable. I live in Simi Valley and have never been to the Farmers Market, so this was such a treat for me. All the vendors were courteous and genuinely seemed excited about having us taste their products and hear about their establishments. I would thoroughly recommend this tasting tour to all. My only draw back to the tasting, was the amount of carbs being tasted ie cookies, donuts, bread, candy etc.... The brazillian bbq was fantastic and the chinese chicken salad from Joans was to die for. All in all a very, very nice tour.......

Great walking tour!

My sister was visiting from out of town, and I was looking for cool walking tours when this popped up on my Yelp search. What a fantastic find! 3.5 hours of fun information and tasty samples, enough to keep you from needing breakfast beforehand or lunch afterwards. I've been to the Farmer's Market several times, and had never seen some of the places that were showcased. There's a decent amount of walking, but it's an easy pace with several stops for water and treats. Diane, a freelance chef and food stylist, was a fantastic tour guide, who obviously had great relationships with the owners/employees of all the places we visited. Great way to sample some wonderful food among the dozens, if not hundreds of food establishments, in the area!

Interesting selection of sites visited

Tour leader is very professional and knowledgeable about sites visited and the history of each. The tastings were excellent. Personally, I would have preferred them not to be so heavily weighted toward the sweet side.

Interesting, but not worth the $50
Sat, May 30  9:30 AM ameliajune Female 30-39 Local Other
I am local to Los Angeles, and thought it would be interesting to learn more about the Farmer's Market, since I didn't go there very often but lived close by. I thought that the tour was an interesting concept, but could've been executed better. For example, we were eating sweets one minute and cheese the next, and then back to sweets. I understand that the eateries are in a certain place, but I would have lined up what I was going to sample better. Who wants to eat olives after having coffee and a doughnut? Also, I always felt rushed on the tour. I know we have a certain amount of time, but I think the guide should work on moving people along by saying, "hey, let's go get this great thing" instead of "we're on a schedule let's go." It was also strange for the guide, who is one of the owners, to ask for tips at the end of the tour. I mean, c'mon, you're the owner, you've already made $50/head, do you really need tips? Then at the end of the tour, it wasn't a shuttle bus that took us back to the beginning of the tour, it was a city bus! Strange. All in all, if you're a complete tourist and want something to do on a Saturday morning and don't want to cook breakfast and have an iron mixing stomach, this is the tour for you. Otherwise, go to a real Farmer's market, buy a week's worth of food for $50 and cook your own and then take a walk in the neighborhood.
