Healthy Eating in the North End
Sat, Aug 16  2:00 PM joycebarth Female 60-69 Local Other
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the North End with its visits to the little shops that still provide the "Old World" foods." Our guide Michelle Torpor was a wonderful historian and well informed on the history of this concentrated area. She provided information on the health benefits of understanding and buying certain foods that add value to our diets. We were shown another side of the North End that the casual observer does not see or experience.

Our tour guide did an excellent job. We learned an amazing amount of information about not only Italian foods but also Italian history and culture. The only suggestion I would make is to point out to people on Saturday tours which shops aren't open on Sundays. I didn't read the handout carefully and found some of them closed when I went back on Sunday. Our whole family enjoyed this tour. I will highly recommend this tour to anyone going to Boston.

My 18 year old daughter accompanied me and we both had a great time. Our guide was very knowledgeable. We visited different shops in the Italian area and learned so much in each one. I would highly recommend this tour.

Our tour guide, Jim was a fountain of fascinating knowledge about the North End, it's history, the culture and of course, the food. Pace was brisk but not rushed, food samples delicious. What a treat to find so many choices off wonderful Italian products at fairly reasonable prices.

Informative, engaging and delicious Dim Sum at end

We were marginally late and the group had allowed as much time as possible for us to arrive. Thankfully we caught up with them. Our guide was delightful; he was welcoming, knowledgeable and keen to engage. The shops visited were well chosen with an range of choices available. We have a nut allergy individual in our family and this was dealt with sensitively and professionally, without fuss. Our 'advisor' had lived in China and thus was informative, in fact, sometimes we felt glad that there wasn't a test at the end. Masses of information, fun and a lovely time. We couldn't recommend enough.

The tour was good, very informative but too long. I think two and a half hours would be perfect.

Beth was so knowledgeable and friendly. This is the second time I have taken a North End tour and luckily, the second time I have had the good fortune to follow Beth around the North End. Both times I have used the tours for birthday presents for family and a good friend. Everyone was duly impressed!

it provided lots of good info regarding the history of the north end. the tour leader, jim, was fantastic. he was knowledgeable on many levels and his manner was terrific. the tour jammed in tons of info and lots of viewing in the three hours and was run efficiently and effectively. clearly this is a well oiled machine. each store had samples ready for jim so that he could do his thing. i have already recommended this tour to many people and i can't wait to take his tour in chinatown.

Worthwhile Tour

We took the tour this past weekened as a family outing - ages ranged from 18 months to 52 years old. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable - we visited restaurants, bakeries, a spice shop and a wine store. The walking pace was easy - no trouble keeping up - had some tasty samples along the way. Good way to learn a bit about the North End and how it evolved to what it is today. Would recommend that you grab something to eat before the tour starts as ours lasted close to 4 hours - the samples provided were delicious but cannot be considered a subsitute for a meal which we fully understood before taking the tour - we went back to one of the places we visited to grab a sandwich when the tour was done and were not disappointed - all of our sandwiches were outstanding! In my opinion, our guide got a bit too detail oriented at times with some of the information being shared - but would rather have someone more knowledgeable than not - but for me it was a bit more info than I care for and I would have preferred to visit a few more locations vs. doing the deep dive info sharing. All in all - would recommend the tour - good handouts were provided with map of the area - have kept that for future reference should we want to go back in for a visit on our own.

I learned all about vegetables, herbs and food as well as the history of the immigration of the Chinese to Boston and their growth into the community we strolled through. The tour ended at a Dim Sum restaurant that was GREAT! Jackie, our guide, was knowledgeable with a great sense of humor. she made the tour special and left you with the desire to return and check out the area even more or to find a Chinese area in your home town to go to to find the items needed to fix that special dinner or cure a cold.

Took my niece for her birthday and not only did she enjoy the tour so did we. Have even gone back to some of the spots to do a bit of shopping. It was fun, educational, learned about the North End and food. Guide was excellent and Michelle went above and beyond making it special for my niece which in turn made it special for me! Thank you North End Tours
