North End Market Tour

Our tour guide, Dick, was really knowledgeable and interesting. We liked how he blended his cooking background into the tour. It was great to hear about the history of the North End, how it has changed, and all the different influences. We would have loved to have more samples, but the information is very clear about the amount of food provided.

The tour was very informative, Very good for "foodies" It would have been nice if the tour gave more information on pastas and regional cooking and implement wines into the program vs just purchasing ingredients ie different spices in the "little quaint grocery store".

Being from an Italian American background and growing up with a Sicilian "nona" and mother, I was taken back to my childhood memories in the family kitchen. I thought I knew everything there was to know about Italian, and more specifically Sicilian cooking, but Michele gave me the how and why of my heritage. If you are only interested in knowing the best restaurants to visit while in he north end, this is not the tour for you. If you are interested in discovering the best quality products in Italian cooking, this is the tour for you. Michele is very candid about her preferances in the north end, and does not necessarily recommend the "tourist favorites" Her hands on walking tour is no "walk in the park". If you cannot stand for long periods of time take caution on this tour, as there t is no place to sit and rest. I would definitely take this tour again and bring as many of my family and friends. Thank you Michele!!

Michele, brought back so many fond memories of my beloved Grandmother and how she prepared our foods and taught me to appreciate our culture. We walked, learned, and enjoyed her passion for the North End. I have lived outside of Boston all of my life, and have taken many tours, but this Tour is The Best!! My friends and I actually went back the next day had Lunch and shopped at all the wonderful Markets that Michele, brought us to on the tour. Thank you so much for a Fabulous visit to Italy in Boston!

We really enjoyed the entire tour. It was very informative and it's great to learn the history behind the foods we eat and how they are prepared. One of our friends that came along had a birthday and Maria's Bakery surprised him with a cake. That was great. How nice everyone was to sing as well!! We highly recommend this tour and hope to take others. Thanks Again Pat LaDeur

My daughter and I found our guide enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. She watched out for all of us and was fair minded. We both learned so much about the Italian cuisine that we didn't realize. I loved the comparisons between the Italian cuisine and the "American Italian" cuisine. The sampling was wonderful --- imprinting the tastes of a wonderful cuisine. The three hours flew by!

well worth the money. our guide was very knowlegable about the area. the tour takes you beyond the "touristy" section of the north end, and into the neighborhood. many nice stores, great foodstuffs, and just an all around good time.

Boston Chinatown Market Tour

We planned this tour because of the GREAT experience we had with the North End Tour and to become comfortable with Chinatown. Our tour guide once again, was Jim Becker. He's a gifted teacher with a special way of sharing information on such a varied, complicated culture. His tour starts with an overview of the country and how the various areas differ in their respective cuisines. We then proceeded to several shops to sample goodies and/or to observe - such as in the herbal pharmacy. The tour ends with a Dim Sum luncheon. Jim explained the history and table etiquette of the food, which was very good. We did not like using our chop sticks for serving utensils as well as eating utensils, as everyone in our group poked around in all the food being passed. We felt there must have been a tremendous amount of effort to get a tour like this together because our general feeling was that the people in Chinatown were indifferent. We did not feel as though they embraced our enthusiasm for their culture. Overall the tour was worth the time and money to us. We learned a great deal. Again, thank you to Jim Becker.

We loved our guide and his knowledge of Chinatown and Boston. It was fun to look into the shops and get a taste of authentic cuisine. This is our second culinary tour and we are hooked!

A tasty tour of cookies, pastry, pasta, meats, cheese and condiments! Dick gave a great social history of the food Americans think of as Italian -- and showed us what Italians in Italy eat and how it's different. Best parts were the interaction with merchants and the sense of being off the beaten path. As a 15-year resident of Boston I'd never been in any of the stores we visited, and all had been in business longer than 15 years. Now that I have my bearings I'll be able to return to the neighborhood with confidence and actually get some shopping done.

My husband and I really enjoyed the North End Market tour. Our guide, Jim, was very knowledgeable and made the tour very entertaining. For example, "do you know how to tell the gender of an eggplant and why is it important?" You'll learn the answer on the tour. If you are interested in the history of the North End, or Italian cooking, or just a fun afternoon, this tour is a must activity.

This tour was run by a former chef who was very knowledgeable about Italian food and the North End in general. By taking the tour, I got a sense of what it might be like to live there. One is able to see passed the tourist crowded Hanover St. The tastings at the different stores were wonderful. The owner of the tour chooses what she considers to be the best shops and then pays those shops for all the tastings. She does not take any money from the owners. I can't wait to get back to Boston to check out this company's new Chinatown tour!
