North End Market Tour

My mother-in-law, husband, and I enjoyed the walking tour immensely. We were impressed by our tour guide's knowledge on most every topic from the Arabic influence in Italy to what makes balsamic vinagrette authentic. We learned so much and were so intrigued that it has inspired us to make travel arrangements to Italy in the near future. We regret not having more time to shop in the beautiful businesses. My group feels that we somehow cheated the shopkeepers by not having at least 15 minutes to buy something; they were so hospitable, it was the least we could do. We realize that this would have added a significant amount of time to the tour. My husband feels that maybe breaking up the tour into a late morning tour and an early evening tour might be fun. Doing this would allow for more time to shop and enjoy the shopkeepers' wares. In the late morning, the pastry shop, Polcari's coffee, and Dairy fresh candies would be great. The late afternoon tour would be fun by starting at the meat market, then going to the wine bottega, and maybe finishing at a great restaurant where some of Martignetti's wines could be discussed. My mother-in-law and I think finding at least one business that will allow you to use the facilities would be very helpful.

The North End Market tour is a great way to spend a summer morning, whether you are interested in history, culture, food and drink, walking the neighborhood, or all of the above. Our guide, Jim, was warm, witty, incredibly knowledgeable, entertaining, and a CHEF!! We learned a great deal about a variety of foods, condiments, ingredients, cooking and people. As a physician, I was especially intrigued by learning about the medicinal/health benefits of some of the foods. As a "foodie", all my senses were tempted and treated. The guide was also very sensitive to different folks' food preferences and dietary needs--the kids on the tour, who may have been "picky"; the vegetarians who couldn't sample the meats got extra cheese. We couldn't believe who quickly three hours could go by. We could have gone on for hours--mangia and more.

Our guide was extremely knowledgeable. She was very responsive to questions, made the neighborhood come alive. She mixed the current Italian-American culture and food with the historical context of the North End and with the contrast of the culture of contemporary Italy.

We had a great time on this tour. Our tour guide, Jim, was very knowledgeable and personable...we shared some good laughs and good food! Hope to see you expand this to ChinaTown as he mentioned to our group on 7/14/07. We would definitely take part in that tour and have already recommended the North End Tour to friends! Bravo!   Jim was an excellent guide. His knowledge of food, food pairings with wine, and the history of the area are unparalleled. He has a great personality and kept the group engaged throughout the tour. Of course, the tastings were excellent, but they were made that much more special and exciting by the shopkeepers, and Jim himself. Bravissimo!!

My husband and I were looking for "something different" to do for a day in Boston (we are from Southern Maine). He found Michelle's tour advertised on a link from Amtrak's Downeaster website. And WHAT A FIND! Our tour guide, Jim, was knowledgeable and personable. We learned so much about Italian food, North End history and thoroughly enjoyed visiting the shops he took us to "off the beaten path". We are avid cooks and I particularly have always loved Italian food and cooking. I learned so much about different ways of preparing common Italian ingredients, and a lot about ingredients that I wasn't as familiar with. If Jim ever decides to do some one day cooking classes, I'd be interested! Likewise, Jim mentioned you were considering putting together a similar tour of Chinatown and we'd definitely be interested in giving that a try too! We both rate this one TWO THUMBS UP and FIVE STARS!!

The tour I participating in was excellent. The guide was extremely knowlegable about the north end. I enjoyed going to the markets and learning about food, oils etc. I have been to Italy several times, and I learned much on the tour. Even my boyfriend, (who is not into cooking; only eating) really enjoyed the tour. The money was well worth it.

Even though I've been coming to the North End for a while, it was so awesome to see new and historical places outside of the commercial establishments. This tour really helped me to understand the importance that food serves in appreciating a culture's history. Thanks so much for a wonderful time.

Our tour guide Jim was incredibly knowledgeable about the history and culture of the North End, as well as regional Italian cuisine. His good communication skills and great sense of humor kept everyone engaged and interested. I also thought the stops during the tour were a balanced representation of different North End food businesses. My only regret regarding the tour was that I did not take notes. There were so many fascinating topics, I suppose I will just have to take the tour again when I am back in Boston!

My friends and I loved the tour. Jim, our tour guide, was great--very informative and interesting. We all felt the tour was well worth the money spent, esp. considering all the free samples! I've been recommending it to friends already.

The tour was interesting. It took three hours or so and covered not only food, but history of the local area. The guide's personal knowledge of both her topic and of local store owners/employees was impressive. I recommend taking the tour in the morning, however. We took it in the afternoon -- which was very tiring after a long morning of sight-seeing.

The two women and two men of our group were equally enthusiastic about the tour. Jim, our tour guide, provided not only culinary information but also historical and anecdotal. We were all amazed to learn that the balsamic vinegar we frequently consume is a cheap imitation!! :)...........

Highly recommended!!! Great tour!! Made our stay more meaningful and learned so much! Our tour guide, Jim, was excellent - very informative and thoughtful - we were pleased that he knew so much about cuisine, being a former chef. The stops we made at the local shops were excellent, and we later returned to them to purchase items (the recommended olive oil, balsamic vinegar, striped pasta, herbs...). We plan to order the prosciutto, etc. online from the Italian deli and have it sent to us in Florida. Jim also spent time with us after the tour, and gave us wonderful recommendations on local restaurants. The tour was well-organized and all of the information needed was printed on the ticket sheet, website, and reiterated at our meeting spot (Marignelli's (sp?) Liquor store. Thank you for a terrific day. Michele & Jim LaHam
