A REAL CULTURAL ADVENTURE

| I lived and worked in Italy for a period of time, but until Michelle explained some of the history and food culture, I didn't understand the significance of many of the most common experiences. This was more about the culture and beliefs of the different areas of Italy (and the imigrant experience) as expressed through their culinary habits as it was about food. Through Michelle, you come to understand the impact of agricultural, economic, social and religious forces on the food of the Italians and their descendents in America. I learned so much in three hours that it is taking me days to process it. Some thoughts for future travelers: The spaces are really small and you have to crowd in. Claustrophobia or hesitancy to be close to others is problematic. Children really don't do well. We had a 10-year old whose attention span was way too short. She would get impatient and was bumping up against $100 bottles of wine! Her attempts to get her mother's attentions were very distracting to others. Move quickly and make mental notes of places you want to return to and explore at a more leisurely pace. There is a lot to cover in the alotted time. Allow yourself the time to go back to the stores you were most interested in. Forget what you think you know about Italian food products. The food isn't as salty or spicy or cheese-laden as you have previously experienced. Be ready for a fascinating experience! | ||||||

| My boyfriend and I decided to take my parents on a vacation to Boston as a Christmas gift. What could have been a disaster - as our reservations were for March 2006 typically a cold bitter month - turned out to be spectacular. The weather was in our favor - just right for a walking tour. My father is 100% Italian and this was the tour to take him on! Both my parents loved the fact that the tour, though long, did not involve a 5 mile hike as they had feared. Rather, the tour was a lovely meandering through "Little Italy" - with samplings along the way! We also learned about the foods of the immigrants - the differences found between northern and southern Italy - and how to make the most out of our meals. The history of the area provided a great mix. Michele guided the tour and was wonderful! We even saw her again a few days later as we revisited the North End and were dining at a restaurant she had recommended. No visit to Boston would be complete without a tour of the North End and you just have to get Michele to take you there! When you can impress my father - you have surpassed the ultimate test! Gracias! | ||||||

| Paul was a wonderful host. He expertly and endearingly gave us the background and history behind many North End highlights - from eggplant to skiddish cats. Our group of three have already recommended the tour to several friends. Crafton Pease | ||||||

| It was a snowy Saturday in March-- and a perfect backdrop for the tour. Our guide, Paul, was wonderful, so knowledgeable and attentive! The shops welcomed us--each unique with their flavors, history and charms of Old World Italy --brought back so many memories of my Nonnie's kitchen where her food didn't just fill the plate---it filled our soul! | ||||||

| Had a very knowledgeable guide for this wonderful tour of the Boston North End neighborhood. Friendly group of twelve folks from all over (incl Switzerland). Fascinating history of the area with an emphasis on the culinary traditions and much sampling. Heartily recommend it. | ||||||

| We totally enjoyed the North End Tour and Michelle. She is dynamic and knowledgeable and passionate about the North End and all things Italian. We have lived in MA. all our lives, been in the North End often to eat, and never fully realized until the tour how much of a treasure Boston enjoys in this wonderfully ethnic area! We recommend this tour as a delightful, delicious way to learn about the history, people, and food of the North End. | ||||||

| Michele explained, in detail, the difference in quality of authentic Italian products and ingredients and those that claim to be! Peppered with flavors and stories about the evolution of food and the neighborhodd, we were thoroughly entertained and went back to experience more on our own after the tour, bringing home our experience and a little bit of Italy for meals to come. | ||||||

| We enjoyed Michele Topor 's North End Tour very much. We found it to be very interesting and informative. She is a great tour guide and very personable and friendly. Our family celebrated my father's 75th birthday. Michele had made arrangements for a very special birthday surprise at Maria's Pastry Shop. Our entire family enjoyed the tour and would highly recommend it to anyone. | ||||||

| I went on this tour several years ago and loved it. This time i brought my Italian boyfriend and we had a wonderful time. The tour is both historically and gastronomically informative, and we had lots of samples! I took plenty of notes and we are incorporating some of what we learned about nutrition and cooking at home. We are tour guides ourselves. Michele's tour flowed pretty smoothly and was a good length. | ||||||

| I loved all the stops and descriptions of stores and food. The handouts made it possible to keep track of what you'd seen. Michele has a lot of personality and it's fun to hear her descriptions of the neighborhood, history, and cooking techniques. | ||||||

| The tour was Saturday afternoon on January 7, 2006. The weather was predicted to be cold and everyone that I could see on the tour dressed appropriately for N.E.Weather. The guide stumbled over his words many times and apologised for this but it became unsettling. The other issue is that the tour should have been 3 hours and was instead done in 1hour and 45 minutes. The last issue that I will mention is that when the tour was completed we were left at some place and had to find our way back to point A. Now for me and my guest that was not a problem, but we did have to give directions to others in the group how to return. Too bad overall, because 2 years ago I purchased tickets and the tour was cancelled due to # of people in group so I was really looking forward to this for a long time. I also was considering touring abroad with Ms.Toper. | ||||||
