I saw a sperm whale and an albatross bird which the crew said was a rare happening. I was excited and amazed at the sightings and the information that the crew provided. I love mother nature and all she provides. Getting to be part of that rarity on the Princess Monterey made me feel like a princess myself. Thanks to the crew my trip was more than I expected.
Meeting the owner of the boat was a special treat, also.
Thanks, again, Princess Monterey crew! |

This excursion was pleasant enough. The captain and crew were well informed and pleasant. The boat was comfortable and we were fortunate to have excellent weather. We sighted 4 whales, but the boat didn't approach to closer than about 150 yards of them. Not having binoculars, the views were distant and scant. All in all, a pleasant experience, but have some binoculars to get a better look at the somewhat distant whales. |

Cater to birders

A whale watching trip is also an opportunity for birders. There are many of us and business would pick up considerably if at least one member of the crew knew who to identify the seabirds seen from the ship. The captain did point out the cormorants at the end of the Coast Guard wharf and did point out an albatross but the rest of the time was devoted to chasing whales. |

This sounded fun, but in reality, it was disappointing. The crew of 2 seemed knowledgeable and were friendly and approachable, but actual sightings are going to depend on a lot of luck. We were taken to an area where there were sightings, and we (and those on another boat) were able to see several spouts. I imagined that we'd actually see the animals, but that wasn't the case.
We chose this company based on price, and had no complaints. Others have written reminding potential customers to take motion sickness pills - this saved me that unfortunate discomfort!
I would only do this again if there was overwhelming evidence that there were lots of whales and dolphins around, and that they were actually being seen. |

Too Long, Too Sick, And Very Little Wildlife

This was nearly a 3hr trip where we spent over an hour travelling to the viewing spot. The weather was clear & dry and the water had a little swell but by the time we were looking for whales a number of people felt sick. We saw 3 killer whale fins a couple of times and a few dolphin fins once or twice while the boat bobbed around for 30 mins making people feel sicker. On the way back the boat was pretty silent as most people felt sick and a good number of them spent the return vomitting off the back. After countless boat trips this is the first I've felt seasick on, and clearly I wasn't alone - all my party felt the same and the looks and sounds from the other travellers seemed to agree. |

We were looking for a relaxing adventure - and this fit the bill perfectly. The guide gave just enough information to orient us without oversaturating us, and we were able to truly enjoy the beauty and relative quiet of the experience - we came across a pod of 7 grey whales, and just sat and watched, mesmerized... it was a truly special experience, and one I would heartily recommend. |

Rough Day
The Pacific Explorer

It was very windy that day. The seas were rough, which I'm told is not the ideal conditions for whale watching. When our time was almost up we finally caught up to two Gray Whales. We caught 4 or 5 glimpses of them from a disatnce of 150 to 200 yards. Very hard to see but I guess this was considered a success by the crew as we were not offered any vouchers. I guess I was hoping for much more, like the websites lead you to believe. An overall disappointing experience. |

Just want to let people know that this event was great! Even though I suffered a bit from motion sickness (even after taking medicine), I had a great time! I would recommend it to others and would like to go back out again sometime. Sincerely, Micheal (pronounced Michelle) |

We took this tour thinking it would be alot different than what we ended up with. We hit huge swells that sent kids and adults flying and losing their footing. People were throwing up everywhere and we ended up seeing the top of one whale for five seconds...and one dolphin on the way back in. So we basically had a 3 hour rollercoaster ride throwing us back and forth. It was our first night out since we had our baby a year ago so we were highly disappointed. |
