Only 2 whales?
Sat, Jul 26, 08   2:30 PM mikesdh2 Male 30-39 Local Couple on a Date
We observed just 2 whales and 2 dolphins. Really disappointing as I assumed we would view various types of whales and in higher multitudes. I saw more sea life while kayaking.

We went on the whale watching cruise on the 2:30pm ride. This worked out since the fog had cleared by then. Don't know if we just got lucky, but we saw a hump back whale with her baby, pretty close to the boat! Closer in to the harbor a dolphin and her baby came over to play by the boat. They leaped out of the water and did all types of tricks, then some seals started to play with them, like playing follow the leader, also leaping out of the water. It was the neatest thing. We took seasickness medicine, and it was a good thing too. I was fine for most of it but still got a little nauseous on the way back for a bit. Not too bad though, and I'd do it again anyway. Definitely take a few layers of clothing. Even if it's warm on shore, it can get windy and cold out there, plus you might get splashed (which we did).

A Great Adventure

My husband and I enjoy the whale watching cruise so much that we do it two to three times a year. The crew is very friendly and helpful. We have gotten to know the first mate, A.J., and look forward to seeing him on every cruise. Katherine, the field biologist, is always informative and adds so much to the experience. Great for families! We met a college student doing a required independent field trip who had never been on a boat. Her initial reaction was, "Oh, no, I hate boats". She was accompanied by her father and younger brother. They all enjoyed the cruise so much, that they were bringing mom and sister to join them for another cruise the following weekend, Great for dates! It is delightful to see so many young couples enjoying the time together. Captain Leon sure knows how to find those whales, plus other interesting wildlife in the area. We always learn something new. If you have only a short time in Monterey, the Aquarium and the Whale Watching Cruise are a priority!

Saw whales from a distance.

This was a nice cruise to see whales from a distance. They do not get close enough to the boat to get good pictures. There were dolphins swimming right next to us.

I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS TYPE OF TRIP TO ANYONE...AND I WOULDN'T MIND COMING BACK AGAIN, NOW THAT I KNOW HOW IT FEELS LIKE.... NICE AND AMAZING TRIP!! I JUST LOVED IT! The boat trip was great, it was hard to get from one side of the boat to the other, when the whales were jumping.. But that is a bit impossible to control. The instructor/commontator was OUTSTANDING her wealth of knowledge of the ocean and all it's creators made the trip very enjoyable as well as educational. She was awsome !!

Friendly Whale Watching

We did enjoy the Cruise. We went the end of July and it was a little cold so be sure to layer. The crew was very friendly and patient. During the cruise we did see a couple of whales, not as close as I was hoping but they are there. We saw a lot of dolphins, and birds I don't remember the names. The sea seems like a very busy place, it's amazing. Also, it's just beautiful to be out on the ocean. We would go back again, no question!

We saw several pods of humpbacks, so we got to see many different individuals. Lots of birds, seals and sea lions as well. No orcas or blue whales. Wife and daughter very sick due to rough seas, but the crew were very helpful and did what they could.

I loved it. It was a great experience. I took my 11 yr.old and 7 yr. old grandsons. The 7 year old had a wonderful, fun time. The 11 yr. old got a little motion sickness and did not enjoy the ride at all. But that's him - he has always had motion sickness problems since he was a child. The person who talked was wonderful in explaining everything to us. She was a very joyful, enthusiastic person. The other help on board were very caring, and attentive to us at all times. It was a great crew to be with. I could do this trip over and over - I enjoyed it so much. I loved it.

This was the first time we went whale watching out of Monterey Bay. My wife and I were celebrating our 31st wedding anniversary and decided to go on this trip as part of our vacation. We weren't first timers as we have been on two trips out of Santa Barbara and one out of Morro Bay and this trip was in the top two of our short list with Morro Bay being a horror story. The first thing we noticed was that many of the people obviously hadn't read the additional information provided when booking the trip. There were people who wore flip flops, without jackets and no hats. These are all essential things for your survival. One thing that is also needed for survival is BODINE in case the seas are rough...common sense should come in here especially if you haven't ever been out to sea before. When we left the dock, it was a nice calm warm day. By the time we got into the open sea, the day was cool, windy and seas were rough. This caused a lot of people to be very miserable without going into great details. FOR EVERYONES SAKE, TAKE BODINE! After what seemed like forever, we started seeing the tell tale spouts that told us we were getting close. In time, we saw about a dozen humpback whales but none really close. We saw a couple of breeches in the distance and tale flukes to go along with the other stuff. The only disappointment was that by the time we had gotten to the whales, we had burned up a good portion of the trip and couldn't hang out as long as we had wanted. This is where their 4 hour trip would be very beneficial for those that want to enjoy the sight of these creatures longer. We were extremely pleased with the captain's handling of the boat in the rough seas, the information provided by the naturalist who was great, and the two crew mates who kept an eye on everyones well being that sometimes they should get hazard pay for. We enjoyed this trip very much and will go with the Princess Monterey again.
