Took us 25 minutes to get to the whales, and there were at least 6 groups of whales. All within a football fields length away from the boat. The tour guide knew so much. She was able to answer all questions, and told us so much... Highly Recommended!! I had so much fun... Ps. Wear sunscreen! lol

Maybe they should encourage people to take the anti sea sickness pills beforehand. My group did and didn't have any problems but a large number of people on the boat did. I think the bay was rougher than normal though.

Excellent views of Humpbacks - no Dolphins
Sat, Jun 7, 08   9:00 AM Johnstone Male 40-49 Local Other
Overall the trip was very good, if a little too long (4.5hrs). We saw many groups of humpback whales, seals, sea-lions and several interesting bird species (including cormorants and one albatross). The boat was rather basic with little or no seating and no heating. My wife was sea-sick - the crew were sympathetic but seemed to want to keep us out of the cabin, despite the fact she felt better there. During the second half of the trip we travelled further out to sea to be over an underwater canyon - this was uneventful. We didn't see any dolphins. It was a very good trip and quite educational. I would recommend a shorter trip (3 hrs) and a bigger boat (100 feet plus).

Great experience

Whale watching with the Princess Monterey crew was really great. We saw lots of whales, the staff took their time for showing and explaining. Crewmembers really knew what they were talking about (I had more of these whalewatchingtrips, so I know the difference). The trip was much longer than we booked for (ca. 5 hours instead of 3), so: excellent experience, great value!

Would not recommend this activity

We approached the activity of whale watching with great anticipation and excitement, even though the water appeared very rough that day, 6/2. The guide appeared to think she was a comedian, who laughed at everything she said, was dismissive of the children ("feed them to the sharks" was her oft repeated comment), and once we got on the boat, all the way out, and while out to sea, kept "sharing" very graphic details of whales' eating habits, digestive habits, mating habits (even describing in detail the three-somes certain whales had - very sexual comments in nature), how thick the fluid is that they feed their young after they digest their food. It was very graphic and very unsettling in a very rough sea, and a large contingent of the customers became very seasick. Part of it was the dialogue, and part was the sea. I am never seasick, and I became very nauseous, though managed not to regurgitate while on board. When we got back, we overheard the ticket sellers saying to the customers who had come for the next sailing that it was too rough out and they weren't taking anyone else out that day. No one apologized to us on the boat or off about taking us out in unsafe seas. We did see 3 whales, in the far distance. This was the point of the trip, and we were grateful for that, but it would have been far more rewarding if we had been rescheduled for a better sailing day, and a different guide.

Disappointing

We were told there is 98% chance of sighting, but we didn't see any whales, only a few dolphins (who didn't seem to be in a playful mood) and birds. We were quite disappointed. Maybe our cruise was one of the unlucky 2%. But I am wondering if they count the dolphins when they say 98% chance of sighting. On a positive note - the stuff and the owner were nice.

Did not see any whale. Just a few dolphins fins. Even the previous trip didn't see any whales.

may have been great if we actually saw some whales

Well, since we were unfortunate not to see any whales, the trip turned out to be very disappointing. There should be some kind of policy where you get some part of your money back or some thing. I mean, not even one whale!!!! And its supposed to be a whale watching cruise!!!! And the site shold also include a warning about not eating before going on the cruise. Lot of people got sea sick!!!

Good Experience

We were lucky enough to see a Humpback breaching on our way back to shore, which was incredible! The only recommendation would be to improve the sound quality of the PA system, which is not audible everywhere on the boat.

Naturalist was awesome and very humorous -- excellent information. I do wish we had been able to get closer to the whales, but it was still fabulous (and doubt there is much you can do about this as it requires a bit of luck).
