i read in the san francisco newspaper that the whales were in monterey bay by the 100's. my wife and i decided to check it out and we were not disappointed. the boat was full but we had no problems viewing the whales. the skillful boat captain was able to get close enough to the whales, for photos, without disturbing/harassing them. it was a totally enjoyable experience and we will do it again next year, hopefully with the grand kids. |

We took the trip on a bright clear day. We were able to watch 2 Hump back whales..quite a sight to see them. The captain and the marine biologist were able to spot them first and they let us know in advance which direction to look for and then they turn the boat accordingly. We were able to watch the whales four times as they came up for breathing every 5 to 7 mins.
Earlier we thought we spotted a blue whale but couldn't see that again.
We also saw many sea lions , sea otters and tons of jelly fish.
Worth it ...except that we all got little sea sick and tired. |

We went for the 10.00 AM whale watching show, they started the trip right on time. We were pleasantly surprised to find about 10 whales in our 2.30 hour cruise. The crew and the guide were very nice and made every effort to sight the whales and stay on its tail and followed the group of whales. Our guide was very good, she explained this the right way and once we spotted the whales, we stayed right there, we must have spent more than a hour easily on those whales. We also saw a variety of other wildlife like dolphins, seals and sea lions. All in all it was a great worthwhile trip. I guess I was lucky |

When we found out that the previous tour on the same day had spotted blue whales, killer whales, humpbacks n dolphins, our expectations soared. So, when we actually didn't spot even a single creature on our trip, it was disappointing to the say the least. What was even more disappointing was that the crew did nothing to lift our dying spirits during the ride, which made the whole trip a pretty bad experience. However, the organizers did offer us another pass which we could use anytime we wanted to. But i doubt if we would be using that! |

We thought the staff was great: everyone was very helpful and knowledgable. We were just expecting a little more. First, when we were offered to "upgrade" to the top deck, we paid the extra $20 each. However, it was so cold that morning, we stayed on the bottom deck until we spotted some dolphins swimming around our boat. We found out that we could see just as good on the bottom deck, as we could on the top. So we feel this "upgrade" really wasn't necessary. Also, the one whale we actually saw was so far away, we could barely make it out. I understand these are wild creatures and are unpredicable, but we were rather disappointed that we didn't see much of anything. The dolphins were cool though, and we did get to see plenty of jellies. |

1. Read the whale-watching tour brochure: sunscreen, sunglasses, a cap are all recommended.
2. Even if you're good on boats, a motion-sickness pill or two might help: my wife and I took the afternoon tour on the 100-foot Princess, and the seas got to three of our touring party.
3. Photographers: you have to be on the lookout and a zoom lens is highly recommended. On our tour, the best we could see were blowhole exhalations and one or two whale tails. |
