Not as hoped

The boat ride was nice! I was not impressed with the trip. The whales were in the distance. The other boats in the water were closer to the whales than we were, so therefore that was a disappointment.

The ride alone was worth it!

We took our trip on a breezy morning so the water was a bit choppy, but that made it fun! We had a few sightings of whales and got to see otters and sea lions up close. No close whale encounters that day, though we did see several blows and almost their flukes while they fed. It was definitely an experience with the just the sail alone, and the sea life we encountered was an added bonus to the trip. I will definitely be going back again and during different seasons to view a variety of aquatic life.

People can be jerks. I have 2 small kids and when we where trying to board the boat, people without kids stampeded like it was a metallica concert. Once on the boat, we sat near the entrance to the boat. The weather was nice and we saw lots of seals and otters in the harbor. Once we got out far enough, someone had spotted a whale. So immediately everyone ran over to where we were sitting and blocked our whole view. I never got to see a whale and neither did my kids. It was a waste of money. People as a whole need to learn respect and courtesousy. I would have never blocked someone's view because I was greedy. It would have been fine to get a quick peek and then move, but these inconsiderate jerks remained there the rest of the time. So be careful, there are apperently no rules when it comes to courtesy.

The waves were quite choppy the day we went, but we saw a fair amount of whales and the marine biologist (Katherine?) was really great!

My husband, 9 year old son and I thoroughly enjoyed our whale watching trip whilst visiting Monterey. It was well organised and we were rewarded with seeing humpback whales which was amazing. Importantly, we never felt as if we were disturbing the whales in any way - the boat stayed far enough away from them at all times. Although this meant our view was from a distance, I felt comfortable knowing we had seen the whales without disturbing their peace and quiet! Highly recommended.

A good biologist makes the difference

Biggest boat, best biologist makes the difference. Although we had bad weather and saw only three whales the biologist made the trip interesting. Having an ex-Coast Guard captain guiding the boat thru rough swells eliminated any concerns. And, if you need to puke, go to the back of the boat please.

Whale watching tour 2008
Fri, Mar 28, 08   10:00 AM PAULKEANE Male 40-49 Domestic Tourist(s) Family With Children
Our departure was prompt and we saw dolphins within the first 15 minutes. The captain spotted Humpback Whales while we were viewing the dolphins, so we wasted no time searching for them. It was fabulous. We saw other vessels in the distance and each was viewing a group of whales (you could see their exhales against the horizon). Altogether we saw 6 Humpback Whales in 2 separate groups. The tour length was perfect as well -- 2 1/2 hours dock to dock.
