If you enjoy visiting an acuarium, this is much more exciting because you can observe animals in their natural habitat.
We saw some sea lions, lots of ducks and also four or five wales. It was really exciting and we took a lot of pictures. |

Nice Boat Ride But You Hardly See The Whales

You get a better idea about marine life if you go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We saw gray whales blow their stack, but you are really to far away to see much of the whale. Gray whales do not jump out of the water. So, you get a couple of brief sightings but you never get the chance to see a living whale any where near close-up. A waste of money.
The boat ride is fun because one goes up and down on the ocean and you get sprayed as the boat goes through the waves. |

We were very excited when we boarded that this will be once in lifetime experience after reading so many reviews but after 2 hours of round and round trying to find whale and watching people puking in front of us due to Sea sickness this whole trip was worthless. In the end all we say was 2 whales at approximately half mile distance exhaling for 2-3 minutes and that is it. We didnt even see whale just exhaling out of water. It took us 3 hours it was really cold and there were way too many sick people. I will not reccomend to any couple. |

One of our worst experiences

The whale watching was non-existent. However, the worst part was the fact the captain took the boat to extremely rough seas with no explanation or narration. After one hour, at least ten people on the boat became quite sick. The captain ignored this and continued in rough seas only exaserbating the situation. In a futile attempt to find the phantom whales, the captain extended the length of the trip by one hour to three and one half hours even though he was aware of the situation with at least half of his passengers being quite sick. Bottom line; my wife and I have never been as sick we experienced on this trip and we are not novice sailors. Plus no whales were sighted. If I hadn't been as sick as I was, I would have demanded my money back. |

Seeing whales' breath not same as seeing whales

Captain and first mate were very efficient. First mate was more than willing to give information. Captain should have given his "whale lecture" on the way out. No whales sighted, luck of the draw. No regrets. Captain's hell for leather attempt to find a whale was admirable, but some of us would have been happy to call it a day and go back. We noticed a contradiction between the "no tolerance sign" on the wall and the availability of beer behind the counter. (husband)
Captain's voice couldn't be heard inside the cabin. It was a long way out and a long way back. That's when the captain should have been talking. Seeing whales' breath is not the same as seeing whales. Rain check policy should be made public over the PA system. I was excited to see an albatross. Captain could have made more of that. (wife) |

We had a wonderful time whale watching. It was a beautiful day that we will all remember. We were able to see numerous gray whales and got lots of great pictures. I do recommend taking some med's before hand, because quite a few people became ill and didn't look too happy. We came prepared and had saltines and ginger candies which really seemed to help. Also, try to stay outside in the fresh air. We had 3 children with us, ages 10, 7, and 6 they all had a wonderful time! |

This trip was disappointing. As an Oregonian, I'm familiar with grey whales and see them frequently from the shoreline. I'd thought that on the boat we'd see them closer and in more detail.
Our captain did find us whales but he kept getting in their path and forcing them to divert their course to avoid our boat. He could stayed 'behind' them and this would've allowed us a chance to see them closer. I believe he was trying to get them to cross right under or around us, which that day's whales didn't want to do.
I also didn't appreciate the captain's seemingly fake deep South accent, with his folksy sayings "I'll double barrel guarantee those are grey whales" which combined with his reading of canned statements was almost comical, when he'd read the same thing twice. Maybe he was bored and not paying attention.
I was expecting more of a marine biologist approach to the experience.
On the positive: it was beautiful on the water and he was a great boat driver.
We saw more whales and in the same amount of detail while eating lunch on the cliffs overlooking the pacific. |

Very much enjoyed the ride and seeing the whales.
Was short on warm clothing. The shop had plenty to spare at reasonable prices.
Website was very helpful, especially the record of what recent trips were seeing. |

Been on 3 different whale watching excursions in Monterey and this one is our favorite.
Personal touch, very friendly and warm...More than anything else, however, very professional from the captain down to the galley worker.
They occasionally had a volunteer guide on board that was very knowledgeable and friendly but perhaps the economic downturn saw that disappear...It's missed, to be honest.
Captain even made it a point to pick up debris from the water so as to preserve the ecosystem...Always nice to see a business caring about the environment, particularly one that actually caters to it.
And the sea life, of course....I can't imagine the excursions on the different boats are all that much different in that we all end up near one another when we're at sea anyway...The last time we came we saw more humpback whales on this 4 1/2 hour trip than I did the entire time in Kauai lthe previous year...Very impressive
This time around, we saw what many in the area rarely see and that's Orcas...We'd been going for years now trying to get a sighting and this time, we spent the entire trip just around a pod of at least 5 Orcas...Amazing experience.
I think the experience then ends up distinguishing one from the other...Personally, I found the Princess Co. was quite professional, informative and warm.
Only suggestion would be that 'sea legs' are important to consider otherwise it can be a miserable experience...Makes the rest of the trip pretty painful, I'd imagine...And remember, this isn't going out on the lake with the family boat, this is the ocean...Waves are a part of it and it'll rock pretty good for a lonnnng time....Plus, prepare for the elements...Dress warmly even on a day that you believe will be warm enough...The wind alone will make it colder and if you aren't properly dressed, you'll spend most of your time in the interior of the boat and miss out on everything...Bring some snacks with you or water as it's only minimal concessions on board. |
