Mixed Whale Watching review
Sat, Apr 7, 07   1:00 PM Michael_Lee Male 50-59 Local Family With Children
We took a Saturday, 1:00PM, Whale Watching cruise on the Princess boat from the Monterey Whale Watching Company, Katherine the biologist was very enthusiastic and made the trip interesting with her insights and stories. Unfortunately, most of the trip was uneventful, we didn't see any marine life once we were out of the harbor. Eventually, the Captain did a great job of finding a couple of Humpback whales, and we were able to watch them for a while. Those are the pluses of the trip. We were disappointed that the boat used, the Princess, "Monterey's largest and most elegent vessel", was not as nice as I expected. The Men's restroom was awful, the toilet didn't flush and there was no water to wash hands. I don't know if the Women's was any better. The snacks available on board was limited and very expensive. A small bag of chips, that should be about 75 cents was $2.00. They allow people to bring their own snacks, and most people did. Coming back to the Harbor, the weather got foggy and chilly, everyone went into the cabin, and it was crowded. The heater worked well to keep us warm. I would go on another Whale Watching Trip, but would try another company the next time.

We really enjoyed the excursion

The whale watching excursion was very enjoyable. The crew and owner was very accomodating. The young lady who narrated the trip was very enthusiastic and interesting to listen to. She made the trip fun.I would recommend it highly. Small children might find it a bit boring if there isn't a lot going on.

short view of whales

I thought it could have been great but it took forever to locate the whales and then when we found them it seemed we had a couple glimpses of fins and then had to turn around and go back. I thought that it was not worth the price of admission. I would have been happy to at least be able to spend a decent amount of time watching and see if they came closer. We had to move since the next tour was coming through. Maybe I should have done more research on this outfit.

*****Five Fins Up *****

My husband and I were so tremendously impressed with each aspect of our tour. Our guide/marine bioligist Katherine was energetic, funny, and extremely knowledgeable. She shared all of these traits with us. By the end of the tour we had learned so much about the "Transient Orca's" that we were so lucky to have shared the afternoon with. The ship was sturdy and safe, and I would have been more than comfortable to have had my children with me. The captain Leon, a 25 year veteran of The Coast Guard, added to our sense of security. These animals are a miracle and the crew fabulous. A definate must see tour. Thanks everybody. We are happy to give it a "Five Fins Up" rating! Diana & Richard Fuentes Lincoln, CA

You should try it at least once in your life

The crew on the boat was wonderful. They were very attentive, caring, & passionate about the whales & the members aboard. The ONLY thing that made it unpleasant for me was seasickness. I did buy the ginger tablets that were suggested, but it didn't help me. If you can get past the seasickness....it's a trip to take.

Fascinating but cold

We had the good luck to see a pod of orcas feeding and palying very close to Monterey. It was very interesting, but a lot colder than we expected. When they say bring warm clothes, they aren't kidding (even glvoes would be useful). The marine biologist was extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

Before the trip started we weren't sure if we would be fortunate to see any whale's. But soon after leaving the dock we were completely entertained by the sight of the awesome size and beauty of a small family of Whale Killers or "Killer Whale's".. In one word, AWESOME!!!!!

Didn't see any whales other than a tail far off

There were too many boats when we seen a spray. The other boats came around and pretty much scared the whale far off. We never seen dolphins, Sea turtles, or any other sea life. So really with a family of 4 we did not get our money's worth. I know there is no guarantee but it was like the dead sea.

The good and the bad.

Our marine biologist was humorous and informative and got our trip off to a great start. We were only 20 minutes into the trip when we saw a couple of glimpses of a humpback whale. That was exciting, but the sighting was so brief that videotaping or taking pictures was impossible. We then cruised around for almost an hour before a quick sighting of a gray whale. This also was very brief and a blink of an eye or if you were on the wrong side of the boat, the experience would have been lost. Out of probably 50 passengers, there were 5 or 6 who got seasick. These passengers spent most of the trip on the back of the boat, looking pretty green and missing all the sightings. My teenage daughter thoroughly enjoyed the trip and got great views of the whale sights. My teenage son was one of the ones who were sick and missed all the sightings. My husband and I felt alittle queasy, and got a glimpse of the humbback. We were there in April, so sightings were not very numerous anyway. If I were to do it again, it would have to be peak season for seeing the whales.

One of our goals in coming to Monterey was to go on a whale watching cruise and hopefully see a whale - this has been a long time dream for my wife. Benji (the owner), CAPT Leon and Katherine (marine biologist) were all incredible. Benji was very personable, professional and enthusiastic. CAPT Leon was the consummate professional in his handling of the Princess Monterey. Katherine was incredible exuberant and knowledgeable about the local marine environment (if you go listen closely to her introduction and see if you catch the reference to "whale cheetos" - she definitely has a sense of humor). We ended up going three times in the week we were in Monterey and enjoyed each trip immensely. The Princess Monterey is well equipped, maintained and it's size allows it to handle sea states that smaller vessels cannot. And, yes, we saw whales (humpback, gray and orca) as well as a group of about 2,000 dolphins. I would enthusiastically recommend this group to anyone. The only caveat is, as with any whale watching cruise, you may or may not see a whale up close. As one of the marine biologists explained think of it as "dropping in" on the whales - you never know what they may be doing.
