Amazing Jazz tour

The trip is extremely interesting and fun. We visited three bars and one public orchestra performance. The music is great and drinks are nice. We didn't feel unsafe as someone may wonder. Highly recommend, particularly to international visitors, to have a taste of American Jazz culture.

We enjoyed the January 1 2014 tour that went on in the midst of the Hercules Storm. In spite of the freezing temparatures and the fact that many of the Jazz places in Harlem were closed due to the Holiday, Gordon Polatnick' s resourcefulness and ample knowledge, made it work and we spent a wonderfull night. The tour is hijgly recommanded!

This tour is a must for any jazz enthusiast. Little bit of walking, little bit of history and whole lot of live jazz, Gordon is the master. Harlemis fantastic and this is really one of the ways to discover it.

We had a brilliant night out this week with Gordon on the Harlem Jazz Tour. We all agree that it's a night we will never forget and it made our visit to New York even more memorable than we had anticipated. Would recommend it to anyone. Thanks Gordon

My husband and I had the best time on the tour. Gordon took us to 3 small "gems" that we never would have found on our own. The music was fabulous! Gordon was a wealth of information, answering questions we had and filling in just the right amount of background for me. The emphasis is on being there and enjoying the music. What a great experience! This was the "real deal" and I loved every minute of it. I'd recommend it to any jazz lover and to anyone even a little interested in jazz. Fabulous!

Met up in Mid Town (easy to find meeting point) and Gordon introduced the group to itself. He's a genial, well connected and very well informed guy who used to run his own jazz club in Harlem - just perfect in this role. We took the A Train (yes really!) up to Harlem - 125th St I think. Gordon picked three clubs, each with excellent and accessible bands playing. (Nothing too experimental or self-obsessed: it was all just great, enjoyable jazz, some based around standards and some not.). We got good recommendations about where to eat and where to drink. The Shrine served the best burger I have ever tasted in five visits to the US. After each set, the musicians were around - in every club they knew Gordon and you could share a drink with them if you wanted. At the end of the night Gordon either helped each guest to get a cab or, in the case of the last few of us, rode the subway home with us (or at least to within a couple of stops). As we walked from club to club, Gordon gave us some interesting background on what we were seeing - he's a jazz historian. If you like music but don't know Harlem, this tour will take you to places you would not otherwise find (and maybe would not have felt confident about going to). You'll have a great night and you'll want to go back there independently or with friends.

Great access to real jazz

Excellent commentary about the history of jazz in Harlem and fun to see the relevant places.Very good cross section of types of jazz and venues presented. Felt we stayed too long at the second venue and the director wasn't around for a while to let him know we were ready to move on. The reason may have been to ensure we arrived late enough to see the best of the next place and the impromptu drop in of several of the performers. The director Gord was really willing to share tips on other places. A very informed and entertaining evening!

Gordon is a very likable host who really wants you to have a good time. He puts in a lot of details into his tours, describing the neighborhood as he goes. Tour went smoothly, no problems. He even went beyond the time allotment to include the last club he had promised - a man of his word.

Crisp Sunday night in Harlem, couple of good clubs, perhaps not the best music since it's Sunday with one major exception: the American Legion Hall! Unbelievable music, atmosphere and food, cheap drinks! The highlight of our trip to NY this time.

Thoroughly enjoyable tour of Harlem Juke Joints

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Juke Joints of Harlem. Gordon provided a very informed perspective of many of the historical jazz locales and personalities. Additionally, he gave us additional tips and names of clubs that we might want to visit during our stay (we did follow up on one recommendation and it was great). Our group of 4 would certainly take another tour with Gordon -- friendly, congenial, knowledgeable; and he made sure we knew our way back to where we were staying while in NYC. We highly recommend a Tour of the Juke Joints of Harlem!

Gordon is a great guide, clear, calm and very trustworthy. He knows Harlem, and he knows where the good jazz is. We visit as he promised, 3 pubs, with different styles. In each of them we had the opportunity to listen great musicians and to experiment the really jazz. We had also the opportunity to talk with the musicians and with the people. The tour was complete, and also flexible. We stayed a little more than four hours. A great experience, I recommend it.

A Night to Remember!

Went to great places that you would never have found by yourself and also learnt a lot of history about the area and the history of Jazz. The first joint we visited was not necessarily our taste in jazz but we appreciated that talent. Second joint was very good and loved the 'drop in' factor of the artists and the final joint was unbelievable...extremely talented artists who made it all seem so easy AND they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Then there was the other patrons who were equally as talented! So glad we did this tour.
