Too bad I can't recommend it

I wouldn't categorize my wife and I as jazz enthusiasts, but we wanted to try something different from the normal NY attractions. We do like jazz music, but aren't very knowledgeable about the history, the types, etc. So this tour consisted of stops at several different jazz clubs/lounges, as well as dinner at Jacob's which was an experience on its own (in a good way). Gordon was very knowledgeable and made trips on the private bus between jazz clubs very informative and interesting. That being said, as part of the tour, one of the stops that night was at Paris Blues, which ruined our experience. It felt very dodgy inside, the music was uninspiring, we had to sit around aimlessly while the musicians took their time, ate dinner and chatted, and we got ripped off really bad on our drinks. For that reason alone I didn't recommend it to my friends. Too bad, as everything else was top notch.

Great way to explore Harlem's jazz scene.

Great tour, will suit both those who are avid Jazz fans plus those who just have a casual interest or just want to see a different side of New York. The guide focused on taking us to less well know jazz bars that you wouldn't find yourself and hence less touristy and more of a genuine/local experience. In addition the guide takes you past the more mainstream places (like the Apollo and Lenox Lounge) so if you want to go to those you can return in your own time and know where they are. Overall and fun, entertaining and enjoyable experience. Would recommend.

The Great Day in Harlem Jazz Tour was the musical highlight of our stay in New York city. Sympathetic and knowledgeable Gordon brought us to places we would have never entered ourselves. A marvellous way to experience Harlem and jazz ! Genuine, intimate ans with a warm welcome in every club we entered. We're so glad we booked this tour and recommend it to everyone, jazz connoisseur or not.

We were in NY for a week and went out of our way to extend what we did and the jazz tour was simply a fantastic experience. Only problem was that it was over far too quickly.

Disappointing

The knowledge of the host was great, and the chance to experience that musical history had wonderful potential but was not fully realized. I did feel the event was too much planned on the fly, given some changes in club availability. The first stop for food and music was very disappointing. If you live in New York and have the chance at these expereinces then no big deal, but this was maybe my only chance at this, so you try to be as planful as possible. Also, some of the group had no sense of etiquette in a club, talking at full volume, and that took away from the experience. I wouldn't book this again.

New York Jazz scene we never knew.....

What a "pot of gold." Gorden is a genuine font of Jazz lore and knowledge. He alone is worth the tour. However, the music is not to be believed...nor is Sugar Hill beer! Wish we had more stamina to hit the Lenox Lounge...next time!

This was a highlight of our holiday. We went to places we could have never found by ourselves and heard the most amazing music from wonderful artists. Gordon is a personable and generous host.

Gord really puts heart and soul into the evening. It was authentic Harlem and I didn't feel like a tourist. We will track him down next time we are in NYC and keep up with the scene on his website.

We had a great night in Harlem and went to three local out-of-the-beaten-path clubs. Gordon was a great guide. Just like hanging-out with a friend who knows the area and happens to be a jazz buff.

Our group included my husband, my grown son and his wife (who are in their late 20's) and we all had a terrific time. While we are not Jazz experts, but enjoy it immensely, and found Gordon a terrific teacher. He was personable, answered all our questions about Jazz and Harlem, and he took us to Jazz Joints we never would have found on our own. It was also enjoyable to meet the other folks in our group. If you have an opportunity to go on this tour take it!

A great introduction to some Harlem jazz places
Wed, Feb 8, 12   7:00 PM BillGTO Male 60-69 International Tourist(s) Family Without Children
Gordon is the perfect guide for this tour. He knows where the best music is, he knows the people who run these smaller jazz places, and he knows the rich history of jazz in Harlem. We heard some great music, and got into places we had never heard of, despite numerous prior trips to NYC to listen to jazz. Strongly recommended if you want to avoid the big expensive jazz clubs that cater mostly to tourists.

Great authentic entertainment
Sun, Jan 29, 12   7:00 PM Anneoldham Female 60-69 International Tourist(s) Family Without Children
We were provided with a very friendly tour guide who had a very good knowledge of Jazz history and Harlem history too. We found all the clubs we visited had a great atmosphere, were very welcoming and the entertainment was not only excellent but professional. The food and drink offered in all venues was very reasonably priced and we also got the best seats in the house. We went to an area, that as tourists, we would never have gone to on our own and whilst there felt completely relaxed and safe. I would highly recommend the tour even if you are not real Jazz enthusiasts.
