The clipity clop of the beautiful draft horse was sweet music as we were taken to another place and time. It was as if Olde Charleston had captured us into its breath. Our driver was so knowledgeable as he guided our horse through the streets of yesteryear which made the trip even more fascinating. I highly recommend this trip to anyone who has any imagination or just loves an adventure. |

Liked our driver, the history, the horse was good. Would do this ride again, as you learn that there are different rides due to the carriage trade you are assigned a route each time. I think it shows you all the great sites around Charleston! |

Old Towne took great care of us. We arrived early, and they fit us in on an earlier carriage ride instead of making us wait. We were impressed with how well they took care of the horses, especially on a very hot June morning. The carriage ride itself was fun, informative and full of history that's not included on the visitor's brochures. Just a great way to experience the homes, churches and history of Charleston! |

Carriage Tour a "Must Do" in Charleston

Historic Carriage Tours are a "Must Do" in Charleston. We take a tour every time we visit, and we learn something new and interesting. Due to the large number of tourists and carriage tours, the city requires the carriage companies to load passengers onto their carriage, then the driver must stop on the next block to be assigned a route number. This only takes a few seconds and you are on your way. You won't know what route your tour has until they get their number, but each route is unique and interesting. I highly recommend a tour that is one hour, and recommend not going in the heat of the day, since the availability of the breeze has a lot to do with the tide changes, and the summers get very hot. Booking tickets on-line assures you a guarenteed time, without waiting, but be sure to bring your printed on-line confirmation information. All tour guides are required to pass a test to be a tour guide, thus you are pretty much guaranteed an accurate and informative tour. Don't forget sunscreen. Though the carriages are covered, the angle of the sun, and an outer seat, can result in some sun exposure. Be sure the kids use the rest room before you start your tour. Most tours allow you to bring water bottles on board, though some prefer that you not snack, because of the crumbs and clean up issues. Enjoy! |

we had a very hard time hearing the tour guide. she was very pleasant and informative, but we were sitting on the last row of the carriage and could barely hear her. we enjoyed the ride through the historic district, but wished we could have learned more. |

We had the pleasure of touring with our guide Kathryn and Clydesdale, Charlie, for a beautiful and informative 1 hour carriage tour on 3-18-2010. Our guide was very knowledgable not only about the history and architechture of the city and its people, but also of Charlie. Having grown up around horses, she proved very capable of handling an animal of that strength, size and determination, and made her guests feel very comfortable. The lottery system that the city uses to determine the carriage routes keeps the guides well rounded about the various attractions and historical sites that may be inquired about depending upon the route the carriage is given. It is highly recommended and a wonderful way to relax and be educated at the same time. We will definately use this company on our next visit to Charleston.
