We had already taken the revolutionary era tour which was incredible, so we knew what to expect. The tour was fascinating, educational, thought provoking and also amusing at times. Karen is the most knowledgeable guide I've seen in a long time, and her passion for the material is clear. She lives and breathes it. She gives the full picture and not just disconnected details, which is crucial. She is also a pleasure to talk to - we stayed to chat with her for about an hour after the tour ended. We'll definitely take the third tour when we get back to NYC!

This is brilliant - the guide knows so much and has such a passion about her topic. I learnt so much about how NY city came to be the place it is today, and I got to see the historic districts of NYC that I'd never have explored on my own without getting really lost. Can't recommend highly enough.

Thanks to our guide Karen, we saw parts of NYC you wouldn't normally see - we went off the beaten track and were shown some lovely corners, parks and buildings of lower Manhattan The total number in the group was 4 and the walk was at a leisurely pace - we had great fun sharing stories and jokes We saw Donald Trump on Wall Street which added to the day - Karen arranged the timing perfectly!! I'd recommend this tour or a similar one to anyone who wants to learn about NYC history and who wants to see the different parts and a different perspective of the city

Historically informed with amusing details

As a 19th century historian, I came to the tour with significant knowledge. I was impressed with the guide's depth of knowledge from the 18th to the early 20th century. Also she deftly wove amusing tales of notable historical characters that were related to her audience's individual interests.

it would be nice on such a cold day to find a building to slip into periodically to discuss information. The tour was wonderful, but it was very cold. Thanks Karen!

I took the Revolutionary War tour last year and was so impressed by it that I had to take the Civil War tour this year. The tour did not disappoint. The tour guide is personable and knowledgeable and filled with enlightening and entertaining anecdotes about New York's place in American history. Highly recommended.

This is the fourth tour we have taken with Patriot Tours during our past three visits to New York City. Karen, our guide, knows her subject very well and provides background stories and insights into historical eras, persons, and events that truly make them come alive. All along the tour route, she also pointed out some interesting architectural features of the older buildings we passed. Downtown Manhattan is a relatively small, crowded area and its streets can often seem like soul-less canyons of glass and steel - but there is much beauty, as well as history, to be found there! Although we took this tour about two years ago, it was well worth repeating. When vacation is over and day-to-day life resumes, as time passes we tend to forget some of those great stories and little details that bring the past to life so vividly. Karen's energy, knowledge, enthusiasm and obvious love for history have made taking a tour from Patriot Tours an essential part of our New York City vacation.

Our guide was extremely knowledgable and charming (almost as much as our Revolutionary War guide). Would highly recommend this for everyone.

Tour was fascinating but eclectic, disjointed

The tour guide was awesome, informative and interesting. There just wasn't that much to say about the civil war in new york, and most of it was financial or interesting asides (the big money interest groups who stood on opposite sides of the civil war for monetary reasons, and the fight that waged between them for hearts and minds and wallets). Honestly, we wanted to do the revolutionary war tour but only available that day and only civil war tour available. The guide was great, but would rather have done the revolutionary war tour. I thought the civil war tour was mostly a "made up" tour of hodgepodge of things thrown together. Will definitely sign up for the revolutionary tour when we are in town again and can make it work.
