A super afternoon!

On a quick family visit to NYC we had a free afternoon that could have been spent inside a museum but we tried a Patriot walking tour instead. Even with a bit of a drizzle we were so glad to be outside and learning about the history of the city in and around Battery Park and Wall St. Karen regaled us with stories of New Yorkers during the Civil War in great and entertaining detail. We now can go back and explore even more on our own. We're looking forward to booking another of Karen's original and insightful tours!

Civil War Era Comes Alive

We so much enjoyed the Revolutionary War Walking Tour from Patriot Tours that we eagerly signed up for this one. We were delighted to see that Karen would be our guide for this tour as well. We knew nothing about Civil War era history in New York, and were fascinated by the details and stories that made this time period come alive for us. My grandfather was born to Irish immigrants in lower Manhattan around 1860, and Karen was able to paint a vivid picture of the hardships and struggles that residents of this area faced at that time. In addition, we learned about some fascinating characters and political scandals - and marveled at the magnificent architectural details that Karen pointed out to us on at least a dozen buildings. We highly recommend this tour and will gladly take it again ourselves on our next visit!

I had taken the Revolutionary walking tour last year and was glad I was in NYC to sign up for the civil war one. It was very interesting. The tour guide knows her history and you can tell she loves history. Took us to areas I never would have found on my own. Learned information I never knew before - how much NYC was connected with the civil war. I recommend it for anyone who is interested in history and interested in a different type of walking tour.

We were very happy with the tour. Our guide provided much historical information and was truly excited about the topic which got us even more interested. Learned a lot about lower Manhattan and politics related to the Civil War that we never knew before.

Tour is an excellent & interesting history lesson!

The tour was fantastic! I knew very little about New York City's role in the civil war apart from a few highlights. My guide was extremely knowledgeable and the I learned a lot about how the city influenced the war. I know quite a bit about the overall war, but had no idea of all the ties to the war effort. The buildings and streets you walk down are amazing and the visuals along the way also help to bring the story alive. Even if you do not like history much, the tour is a wonderful way to see some of the side streets and lesser known places in lower Manhattan. I can't wait to take my husband with me sometime to see the same tour!

A Civil War enthusiast from England

I have had a deep seated interest in the Civil War for some 45 years. My wife and I love New York. This was our third visit in the past 7 years. I was intrigued by the tour knowing that the Confederates did not get further north than Gettysburg. The tour provided a fascinating insight into the history and also to present day New York. Karen was an enthusiastic and knowlegable guide. I learnt a great deal and throughly enjoyed my trip. My wife was also throughly entertained and said that if Karen had been her history teacher, she would have taken a much greater interest! It was a compelling and informative two hours which was also totally entertaining

Entertaining and educational

The tour far exceeded my expectations. Karen, the guide, had a vast storehouse of knowledge about the topic, answered questions readily, and took the time to explain things. She cross-referenced several sites that we would see the following day on the Revolutionary War tour. Clearly, she continues to build upon her knowledge by researching historical documents and sites to learn as much as she can on the subject matter. The two hours passed quickly and as we left, we were anticipating what we might learn the next day's tour.

Having already attended the Revolutionary Era tour and loving it, I was unsure what to expect from the Civil War tour. Typically, I don’t think of NYC as being heavily involved with the Civil War, but was pleasantly surprised. The tour guide, Karen, was a delight, and full of historical CW tidbits. I learned info from her that I would probably never have gotten out of a book. It is the small details that help to form a picture in your mind and she is great with that piece. I hope to bring my sons, ages 14 & 11, to both tours in the near future. It was informative and fun to learn and know that they will enjoy the experience as well.
