Fascinating - makes lower Manhattan come alive

Although we grew up in the New York City area and have been to Manhattan many, many times, this tour really provided a new prespective. Karen's enthusiastic story telling and obvious love of history allowed us to see and feel lower Manhattan as it was in the mid 1800's. The architecture of the period remains in pieces for the trained eye to see...and Karen is good at pointing out what remains and filling in the gaps of what has not survived. Karen's descriptions and stories of the notable people of the time transport you back to that time. This was a most enjoyable 2 1/2 hours.

We all loved the tour. It was extremely insightful and entertaining. I'd recommend it to anyone interesting (even a little bit) in NYC history. It is definitely not just for history buffs.

Never thought I would enjoy something like this. The tour was very informative and well presented. So many things you take for granted until they are pointed out to you. Loved the tour

Karen captivated us with the Revolutionary War tour last year, so we were eager to return for the Civil War version. We were not disappointed! Her passion for history is evident in her preparation and in her enthusiasm.

Enjoyable, a little tweaking maybe

Our Civil War guide would probably enjoy some of the walking tours offered in Charleston, SC. Civil War was not all about slavery. States and individual rights very much a part of the conflict, as was (is) the propensity of Northern Protestant clergy to know best for all. On the whole, we enjoyed our tour. Fascinating and detailed -- not to be missed!

I have a confession to make -- I'm a walking tour addict. I've been on at least two-dozen different walking tours in London, a half dozen in New Orleans, and another half dozen in NYC. So I've been exposed to dozens of different tour guides, each with their own style and breadth of knowledge. The Civil War walking tour of NYC is far and away one of the best I've ever been on. I've been on the World Trade Center walking tour, and it's a joke compared to this one. If you're an American history buff, you'll eat this stuff up. Karen has gone to great lengths to not only research the era she talks about, but also to obtain copies of documents, paintings, newspapers, drawings, and cartoons of the period. For 2 solid hours she passes along more historical information than you can believe. If only history class had been this interesting when I was in high school I might have paid more attention! As Karen leads you through lower Manhattan, you'll gain a new perspective on the Wall Street and City Hall areas. I could almost see the way things looked 150 years ago, thanks to the visual aids Karen brings along. Nearly every step of the way she points out a fascinating artifact, architectural detail, or geographical oddity. I learned more about Manhattan in those 2 hours than anyone born and bred in Manhattan even knows! I should also add that I had the luxury of a private tour, given that I made my reservation during the slowest time of the year and somewhat inclement weather. Karen graciously gave me the full tour with just as much enthusiasm as if the tour had been fully booked. I was also fortunate enough to spend some time after the tour discussing other aspects of politics and history with her, and I can say that she really does know her stuff. She was familiar with many obscure details of American history that few people I know are aware of. She is clearly passionate about what she does and really puts her heart and soul into it to give you the very best tour possible. If you are at all interested in the history of NYC or its role in the Civil War, this tour is an absolute must. You will not be disappointed, trust me!

Great Tour!

We were looking for a walking tour that covered a rarely detailed part of Manhattan, the Civil War period. We were particularly interested in the rise and fall of the Five Points area. Our guide, Karen, was on time and armed with articles and pictures describing the time period. She was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. All important points were covered and highlighted with facts, figures and delicious gossip. From world renowned monuments to obscure spots, Karen covered them all with the passion of a person who loves the history of this amazing metropolis. This was truly a great way to spend a couple of hours learning and being amazed. I can't wait to go back for the Revolutionary War tour. Without a doubt one of the best entertainment investments you can make in the entertainment capital of the world.

Wealth of Information and Knowledgable Leader

Our tour leader knew so much about the New York area and it's various political, historical, cultural and social differences. The Civil War tour was great for history buffs, but also a great resource for teachers. If you can take this tour and present it to your class or better yet take them on the tour, it is really worthwhile. You will see many little streets that you would never walk through when visiting New York City. I have been to the city several times and had never seen some of the places we visited. Our tour leader is obviously well-read and has many interesting visuals to add substance to the times she is telling you about. I enjoyed this very much!

The tour was informative, entertaining, and fun! The guide was extremely knowledgeable and was able to answer even the most obscure of questions. We look forward to doing another Patriot Tour on our next visit to NYC!
