Although we grew up in the New York City area and have been to Manhattan many, many times, this tour really provided a new prespective. Karen's enthusiastic story telling and obvious love of history allowed us to see and feel lower Manhattan as it was in the mid 1800's. The architecture of the period remains in pieces for the trained eye to see...and Karen is good at pointing out what remains and filling in the gaps of what has not survived. Karen's descriptions and stories of the notable people of the time transport you back to that time. This was a most enjoyable 2 1/2 hours. |

We were a small group of just four people. My Mom and I and a couple from Michigan. We were all history buffs and appreciated Karen's willingness to be flexible and work in some of the non-Civil War related history of lower Manhattan as it occured to her, and to us. I would recommend this tour to others. |

My time with Karen was well spent as we walked through downtown Manhattan, rich with history. All the stories, anecdotes and descriptions were finely detailed. I was especially pleased with the period cartoons that helped reinforce the emotion and conflicting opinions. This was a rare treat for those who appreciate the Civil War and the great ironies involved. There is so much to learn that we never hear of in traditional forums and public education. Truly an eye-opening experience and one not soon forgotten. I highly recommend it and consider is comparable to a crash course in New York history. |

Having already attended the Revolutionary Era tour and loving it, I was unsure what to expect from the Civil War tour. Typically, I don't think of NYC as being heavily involved with the Civil War, but was pleasantly surprised. The tour guide, Karen, was a delight, and full of historical CW tidbits. I learned info from her that I would probably never have gotten out of a book. It is the small details that help to form a picture in your mind and she is great with that piece. I hope to bring my sons, ages 14 & 11, to both tours in the near future. It was informative and fun to learn and know that they will enjoy the experience as well. |
