Activity Description
Discover the historic graveyards of St. Paul's Chapel and Trinity Church - small oases of history and lore tucked away amidst the Financial District's towering office buildings. Beneath the spreading trees that blanket these properties, you'll see where some of the city's most fascinating early residents are buried and learn about their intriguing pasts.

St. Paul's Chapel

New York City's oldest public use building, the chapel was built in 1766 by the powerful colonial Church of England as a country chapel. It is the only building in lower Manhattan built before the American Revolution that is still standing in its entirety.

A trip through the graveyard reveals some of the city's most pivotal characters and events of the American Revolution. Among them are:

  • The Liberty Printer who enraged the city's Loyalists till they threw him out of town
  • The man who made General Washington's sword
  • Four original members of the Society of the Cincinnati
  • A minister and founder of King's College
Trinity Church

Situated just a few blocks away, Trinity is the mother church to St. Paul's Chapel. The original church was built on this site in 1697. In 1776 the church was destroyed in a fire that burned while the British took possession of New York City.

Although the original church is long gone, the graves date back to its founding era. In them is a who's who of the city's early history:
  • A member of The Wicked Triumverate
  • A signer of the Declaration of Independence
  • A founder of the NY Sons of Liberty
  • The only American Lord
  • A beloved Founding Father
and more...
