The perfect guide
Mon, Jul 6  10:00 AM kpncamelot Male 60-69 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends
We were two couples from Minnesota and had a great time. It's wonderful to walk the city with a guide who is bursting with knowledge--not just someone who knows the script. So we couldn't be more positive. Whether you love history or not, there was a lot there for you. My one suggestion: my legs aren't as good as the guides. Three hours without sitting is too much for me. With a little planning, she could find places for people on the tour to sit occasionally while she talks. Not to sit and waste time, just to sit as she talks. I found them for myself. But there where steps to sit on, benches to sit on, etc. She's so enthusiastic about what she describing, I don't think this crosses her mind. If she just went to each of the locations and looked around for a moment, there are places where people could sit as she talks. It was great. We'll recommend it to friends.

The guide was knowledgeable and very cordial, ready for any question. While the tour is packed with interesting highlights, the pace is comfortable and unhurried. Whether your interest in this historical period is casual (at least a little prior knowledge is recommended) or specialized, you will come away having learned more. The guide makes a point of adjusting her commentary according to the background and interests (warfare, politics, commerce) of the individuals taking the tour. Well worth the time and money.

We all loved our walking tour in NYC. Our only regret is that we had to leave early to catch a plane. So much insight and depth! I am a history buff and still learned a lot. Thanks

The tour was interesting -- but not compelling enough to warrant 2 1/2 hours in a steady cold downpour. At several stops, there was an awning or building overhang just a few steps away but the guide was not flexible enough to allow us to stand anyplace other than the exact appointed spot. Between spots, she allowed her conversation to be monopolized by one young man, leaving the rest of us out of the discussion.

Karen did such a great job passing on her vast knowledge of revolutionary war New York history in an interesting and light hearted way that the time just flew by. I love history and this was a great treat for me and my friends. I highly recommend this tour to anyone of any age.

Great Stories, Well Told

This tour was excellent. We have done a fair amount of reading on the revolutionary era, mostly the current biographies - Adams, Jefferson, Washington, Franklin, Hamilton, but we are by no means scholars. The engaging stories our guide told added greatly to what we already knew. Our guide was able to make the places and events come alive, which is no mean feat in the context of walking through modern day Lower Manhattan in the middle of a work day. She was able to bridge the gap between then and now, giving us a sense of what it was like then and connecting the characters and events to the current scene. But beyond the content, our guide was upbeat, friendly, flexible and a great story teller. While staying largely on her plan, she fielded all questions with good humor and nimbly refocused her presentation to fit the emerging interests of the group. All in all a great experience and over too soon.

Having already attended the Revolutionary Era tour and loving it, I was unsure what to expect from the Civil War tour. Typically, I don’t think of NYC as being heavily involved with the Civil War, but was pleasantly surprised. The tour guide, Karen, was a delight, and full of historical CW tidbits. I learned info from her that I would probably never have gotten out of a book. It is the small details that help to form a picture in your mind and she is great with that piece. I hope to bring my sons, ages 14 & 11, to both tours in the near future. It was informative and fun to learn and know that they will enjoy the experience as well.

My friend and I attended the Revolutionary War walking tour in the AM; and the Civil War in the PM. We had a great time for both. For the Revolutionary tour, I found the small details discussed and the humor in which the Colonists "debated" interesting and funny at the same time. Seeing the landmarks of important happenings was such a neat thing. So much history happened in New York at this time and seeing it come to life through our guide, Karen, was great. She was funny, knowledgeable, and it was apparent she loved her job. Her enthusiasm for the history was contagious. If you like history, you will love this! Highly recommend!

I thought the tour was really informative. I learned a lot about people important to the Revolution that I didn't know about before. I thought the guide was really knowledgeable and able to talk off prompt about questions regarding other events happening at the time. I thought the pictures were helpful in imagining the surroundings of 250 years ago. The only thing I thought was not good was the fact that we couldn't see more of the cemetery at St. Paul's. We really only saw one grave. Also the graveyard at Trinity Church is closed on Saturdays, so we couldn't walk around there either. Also, there wasn't much time or places to sit down when we were walking. My legs got tired just from standing for 2 hours.

This was an excellent and enjoyable walking tour. All four in our party enjoyed the experience. The key to the quality of the tour was our tour guide, Karen, who has a great depth of knowledge, and a pleasing way of conveying the information. Karen is excellent. If you have any interest in the Revolutionary War i would highly recommend this tour given by Karen Ken Lewis

Fantastic well-informed tour-guide!
Fri, Feb 20  10:00 AM KEFowler Female 50-59 Combination Couple on a Date
Our tour guide Karen was well-spoken, informed and enthusiastic. It was a bitterly cold day but she didn't flag once, take shortcuts, complain or make excuses, yet she always had our comfort and questions and interests foremost in her mind. The tour truly was substantive and was well-worth the cost. Karen alone was worth her weight in gold! We were so impressed on all counts, having taken similar tours in the past that proved to be superficial, and more conventionally touristy. This was a substantive and entertaining walking tour, we learned a great deal and saw a side of New York that will truly be well and fondly remembered. Thank you so much!
