Absolutely Fantastic!

This tour was one of the best that I have ever taken! The tour guide was so engaging in her description and very, very knowledgeable about the subject and she was easy to follow and understand. She was so enthused about her subject and it showed with every step that we took. I would heartily recommend this tour to anyone because it is simply that good! Our tour guide provided a first class service for the cost of the ticket and it was well worth what we received! I will book another tour from her the next time that we are in New York.

Karen's tour was absolutely fascinating. Not once was she dry and stodgy, with a recitation of dates and facts. Rather she focused on the personal stories and anecdotes. The tour was long -- more than two and a half hours -- and we weren't bored for one minute. Just be absolutely sure to wear comfortable shoes!

This walking tour of lower Manhattan is rich with stories and details about the area's Revolutionary history. The guide brings to life many of the people and events that were so central to the birth of our country. The walk is well-researched and presented by a guide who clearly loves what she does.

I am a big fan of American history, particularly around the revoluntionary period. I learned so many new facts on this trip and saw many interesting things. The tour guide was insightful, passionate and welcomed our questions. She did a great job plotting out the stops on our tour and the visuals she showed the group also added to the tour. Anyone interested in New York's history and/or the history of the founding of our country - this is a must do.

Interesting, little known history

The tour and information were great, and the guide was very knowledgeable, but it was 'all business' without thought to human needs--the walking tour lasted 3, not 2 hours, with no mention of where there were opportunities for restroom breaks. It would be very easy to add to the intro, there will be X opportunities for restroom breaks, once at the first church, second...and then tell folks where the facilities, bus, etc. are in relation to the spot where we ended. It would also be nice to have a map for each participant with the walking route & key sites noted.

Karen was a knowledgable and passionate tour leader. She was outstanding!! She went past time with our permission because of her passion for the topic and her desire for us to learn as much as we could. She knew her field and covered it in a way helpful for a novice. While I'm a history buff, my wife is not and my wife learned a great deal and thoroughly enjoyed Karen. The revolutionary war tour of lower Manhattan was tremendous. I'd recommend it to anyone. Karen had superb knowledge of of the colonial history of NYC. Her presentation was enthusiastic, thorough and well organized. We appreciated the prints and maps she showed us. I'll recommended the tour to everyone and so will my wife and brother.

Well prepared tour guide

Karen the tour leader was excellently prepared and informed. It would be interesting to know how she prepared the tour. Is she a professional historian? She knew all sorts of historical detail about New York's role in the events of the Reveolutionary Era, and had made copies to pass around of a number of documents from the period. There were only six of us on the tour, which made asking questions possible, and made it possible to keep the group together and close enough to hear her-- which might have been much more difficult if the group had been 12 or 15. It was a hot August afternoon, and our interest flagged a bit in the last 1/2 hour, but ...we had another appointment to make in 20 minutes, and we had already walked a mile or two just before starting-- and many miles the day before, so it's possible that if we were fresh the tour would have seemed just the right length. Fortunately another couple whispered to us that tips would no doubt be welcome, since we might not have thought of that on our own, but we quite willingly pressed $10 into her hand while shaking hands goodbye. It's advertised as rain or shine, but it's hard to see how it could have proceeded in cold or rainy weather.

Civil War Era Comes Alive

We so much enjoyed the Revolutionary War Walking Tour from Patriot Tours that we eagerly signed up for this one. We were delighted to see that Karen would be our guide for this tour as well. We knew nothing about Civil War era history in New York, and were fascinated by the details and stories that made this time period come alive for us. My grandfather was born to Irish immigrants in lower Manhattan around 1860, and Karen was able to paint a vivid picture of the hardships and struggles that residents of this area faced at that time. In addition, we learned about some fascinating characters and political scandals - and marveled at the magnificent architectural details that Karen pointed out to us on at least a dozen buildings. We highly recommend this tour and will gladly take it again ourselves on our next visit!

Revolutionary Reflections

My work involves research, reading and writing on George Washington and his family; some of my interest in this tour stemmed from my work. As a former New York resident, I also wanted to find out more about the history of Lower Manhattan, particularly during the Revolutionary War period. Our guide, Karen, could not have been better! Her enthusiasm for and knowledge of her subject were outstanding. Every minute of the tour was crammed with fascinating tidbits and facts about personalities, buildings, and events associated with each of the areas that we visited. It is unlikely that you would ever find the detail and depth of information that Karen provided, in any other reference written or verbal. We enjoyed the Revolutionary War tour so much that we decided to take the Civil War tour as well. My husband and I highly recommend this tour to others, and we will definitely take it again ourselves on our next visit to New York!

I had taken the Revolutionary walking tour last year and was glad I was in NYC to sign up for the civil war one. It was very interesting. The tour guide knows her history and you can tell she loves history. Took us to areas I never would have found on my own. Learned information I never knew before - how much NYC was connected with the civil war. I recommend it for anyone who is interested in history and interested in a different type of walking tour.

One of the Best

This tour was the best tour we had while on vacation in New York. It provided us with history that is sometimes glossed over or left out in history books. All we hear about is how Boston and Philadelphia played an important role in the revolution, but I had no idea the impact that New York had. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and provided an excellent experience. I would highly recommend this tour to everyone.

I am an 8th grade history teacher in Florida and I went on the tour with my husband, and brother and sister-in law. We all had such a wonderful time. Our tour guide knew more information than I could have ever imagined. I brought so much knowledge with me back home that I can use in my classroom. Besides this being great for teachers, it was very interesting to see history that you would never knew existed in NYC. (The other 3 people I were with were not in education and they loved it!!!) The Before and Now pictures and descriptions were amazing and enlightening. It was fun to learn about things that the everyday person passing by would never know. Our guide did such a good job and she was very personable and enjoyable to be with. I highly recommend this tour to anyone with an interest in history and discovery.
