Good Walking Tour

I didn't find that there were many important events and artifacts connected tot he Civil War in New York City, with the Draft Riots being the most important. However, I thought the guide did an excellent job of relating what was there. She was inthusiastic and very articulate. I really enjoyed listening to her. Her mentioning of other non-Civil War, yet related, significant events which took place in NYC within 20 or 30 years of the Civil War also helped make it a better tour.

I'm local and was looking for something to do with my family from out of town -- people who are never satisfied. We signed up for the Revolutionary Tour and it was the best thing we did in NYC, and among the best "tourist" activities I've done PERIOD. When people think NYC, they think Broadway shows, shopping, etc., but I don't think people consider how NYC impacted the founding of America -- just as much as Boston or Williamsburg. Our guide, Karen, was friendly and super knowledgeable. We could tell that she had a passion for NY and history, not that she just memorized a script. She could answer any question related to the buildings, the time period, really anything. Karen kept a great pace and the time flew by. She peppered the more basic info -- the history of the buildings and whatnot-- with a lot of trivia about the people and politics of Revolutionary-era New York. And she was a total delight. Having taken other tours like this one in many American tourist areas (Boston, Virginia, DC) and abroad (London, Paris), this absolutely ranked at the top of my experiences. It's well worth the time and money. I highly recommend this tour for natives and tourists alike.

An absolute must for history buffs & NYC fanatics!

This was a fascinating glimpse at a volatile period in our history that incorporated facts (and intriguing trivia!) from local, national and international scope and presented them in a concise timeline. This enables the guest to get a real feel not only for the New York as it was in the late 1700's, but how the actions and decisions of that time created what we know today as NYC and the USA. It will effect how you look at the City for the rest of your trip...and every trip afterward!

The Rudest Tour Guide(owner) Ever!

It took us 30 minutes to find the meeting place - the NYC Police couldn't figure it out either, but eventually we stumbled on the location. We expressed our difficulties finding the meeting place, and several others in the group expressed similar concerns. Then the Owner/Tour guide said the directions were "easy to understand," but we and others noted that they were not, and those of us who speak English as a second language had particular difficulty with following them (not to mention the cab driver, MTA employee, and the traffic police officer). She actually told us that maybe we should just get our money back since we wouldn't understand the tour anyhow since we couldn't understand the directions to find the meeting spot ... since English was not our first language and we were not able to follow her perfect instructions. Apparently, those of us whose first language is not English are too stupid to participate in this activity. We decided to give her a chance to redeem herself, but she continued to be rude during the tour and probably worse, the majority of her content was not civil war era information. We paid for a civil war era history tour, but instead more than 50% of the information she presented pertained to after 1900 and much of it regarded architecture. We left during the last 15 minutes because the rudeness directed at us never let up. BTW, I am a retired American history professor . This tour guide/owner needs to work on her civil war information, customer service orientation, and manners.

My husband and I are in our mid and late sixties. We don't do so well just ambling around. This tour gave us a focus to see the financial district as well as the battery and also to learn of New York City's role in the revolutionary war. If asked before this tour if George Washington and his forces were on Manhatten I would have probably said no. I learned a lot and enjoyed this tour.

This was without doubt one of the best walking tours I have ever taken. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and clearly loves her subject matter. She answered all questions with ease and was a pleasure to spend a few hours with. We learned quite a bit and will highly recommend this tour to all our friends travelling to New York. If you enjoy history even a little bit, do not miss this tour!!

The guide was enthusiastic and very knowledgable on her topic. Also very familiar with the local area and other things of interest to us. At end of tour was very helpful to get us going to whatever we wanted to do next.

Fascinating way to spend time in NY

My husband chose the Revolutionary War Walking tour as a way to enjoy our free afternoon in NY. I wasn't sure it would be as much fun for me, but decided to go along. This tour turned out to be so detailed and interesting that I had as much or more fun than my husband did. The facts that the tour guide presented were not dry , boring statistics. She had fully researched her talk and included many intimate little verbal portraits of how life was during the 1700's. She also had illustrations and maps to show us how NY looked at the time. I had never even considered what NY looked like before it was NY. The tour ended up being nearly 3 hours due to the thoroughness of the information given at each of the sites we visited. The actual walking was not strenuous and we even got to sit for a while at one location. We plan to schedule a day for the Civil War tour given by this same guide as I anticipate another afternoon of exciting facts and good conversation with her. She really knows her stuff. Highly recommend this to both history buffs and those, like myself, who have forgotten more than we ever knew. about the Revolutionary War. ( thanks the Mailman family.)

We cannot recommend this tour highly enough. It was excellent. Karen brims with enthusiasm and knowlege and is able to put it all over in a very clear and engaging manner. A lot of information is imparted about locations and context but it is never dry or dull - just completely fascinating. This is all supplemented by very good use of maps and illustrations. If you just want a wander around whilst having a few sights pointed out this is probably not the tour for you but if you really want to understand and feel the history of the sights and their context in the city and in this key event in American history then sign up now! We were only sorry that our schedule did not permit us to go on Karen's Civil War tour as well - next time definitely.

This tour was great. The group was small which made it very interactive. The guide was very knowledgeable, and was able to answer all of our questions. She really enjoys giving the tours, and she makes the tour a lot of fun. We took the Revolutionary War tour and liked it so well, we decided to take this one. We just wish there were more tours to take! This is a great way to see Lower Manahattan and learn about history!

Well worth the time and money.

The guide was knowledgeable and very cordial, ready for any question. While the tour is packed with interesting highlights, the pace is comfortable and unhurried. Whether your interest in this historical period is casual (at least a little prior knowledge is recommended) or specialized, you will come away having learned more. The guide makes a point of adjusting her commentary according to the background and interests (warfare, politics, commerce) of the individuals taking the tour. Well worth the time and money.
