This tour was outstanding. Our guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I would recommend this tour for adults and high school aged children.

Not for young children

My husband and I brought our seven year old daughter on this tour because she watches Liberty Kids about the Revolutionary War, and learned a little bit about it in school. We all thought this would be a great way to understand the war better and learn a little bit more of what happened in our city. What we found was information that was way over her head. We didn't finish the tour because she was so bored and really didn't care about the sites. The tour is NOT ment for young children as they have a short attention span and it wasn't fun for her. I think this tour would have been fun for her had there been some kind of brouchure with activities on it for her. We took her to Ellis Island and they have a little brouchure that kids use along with the tour that make it fun for the kids. I think this would be a good idea to use for this tour as well. As for my husband and I we would love to take the tour again without our children. Even though we left early, we found the tour to be full of information and the tour guide was very nice. She was really great at answering questions not just about Manhattan but about the other boroughs in the city and what roll they played in the war.

Excellent Tour. Very Knowledgable Tour Guide

My dad, my 16 year old son, and I took the Revolutionary Tour this past Thursday (4/05/07). We were very impressed with how knowledgeable our tour guide, Karen, was on the history of New York during this time period. Her passion and enthusiasm came through. A wonderful experience, and very enjoyable. We learned a lot. Since Karen has actually worked in this area of New York, she was able to relate the history of New York with some of the current events since 9/11. I especially appreciated the e-mail communication prior to the tour. Very quick turn around on all my questions, etc. Excellent tour. I would highly recommend to anyone interested in Revolutionary Era history and points of interest in lower Manhattan

Nice tour but not much "walking"

It was a cold windy day in downtown Manhattan and I was expecting there to be a little more walking in this tour. I found the content interesting and, as a native, learned a lot about revolutionary NYC that I never knew. I found learning the history of things I've walked past a million times also very compelling. Still, it seems the tour would have been more appropriate for a summer day. In most cases we would walk half a block and then stop for 10-20 mins hearing another interesting bit of history. I suggest that on cold days the tour should be designed for a little more walking while outside, and a little more than two stops inside (we stopped only in St. Pauls and Trinity).

Great Tour!

My 8 year old son is a history fanatic, particularly military history of the US. We've been on historical tours in DC as well as Boston but never in NY. I'm from NY and love this old section of town though I'd never realized the extent of history that was here. My son loved it too and was fully engaged for the entire tour. Karen did a great job of bringing the history to life and making it an enriching and memorable experience. We plan to to the Civil War walking tour on our next trip to NY. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY US!!!!

We had a large group of diverse ages and backgrounds. The tour guide was excellent; she engaged all members of the group, making the tour entertaining, interesting and informative. She was gracious and helpful. It was the best walking tour that I have been on and I have recommended it to friends.

Affected by weather

The tour was interesting -- but not compelling enough to warrant 2 1/2 hours in a steady cold downpour. At several stops, there was an awning or building overhang just a few steps away but the guide was not flexible enough to allow us to stand anyplace other than the exact appointed spot. Between spots, she allowed her conversation to be monopolized by one young man, leaving the rest of us out of the discussion.

I have taught history for 37 years and never enjoyed a history tour as much as this one. Karen is extremely knowledgeable and she keeps everyone excited and involved.

We truly enjoyed the tour. The great detailed history was more than we expected. We truly felt like we got more than we bargain for. We have recommended the tour to several people since then. It is a great tour idea. I hope it grows to more areas.

This was our first trip to NYC and I am a big history fan so I planned this tour for our second day. I had read the other reviews when booking so was really looking forward to this. Karen was amazing!! Her knowledge and use of illustrations during the tour really brought history alive. This was one of the big highlights of our trip. I highly recommend the tour and Karen is a fantastic guide. The pace was just right.

Unbelievably interesting!

This walking tour turned out to be so much better than we had even anticipated. Warm, friendly and very knowledgeable, our guide had experience working in the financial district, which brought even more to the tour. Told in story form, and interwoven with current affairs, this historical walk through downtown Manhattan was an easy walk, full of humor, and unbelievably interesting. My 18 yr. old son thoroughly enjoyed it--now that says something! Don't miss this one!

How can anyone know so much?

My family and I had an afternoon tour of lower Manhattan that was a semester's worth of learning packed into 3 hours. Amazing, do not miss. How could you waste your time on a crowded noisy tour bus listening to a routine monologue when you could do this? Just be prepared to walk, you'll be happy you did!

Great tour from a Revolutionary War viewpoint!

We had a great time on this tour. We learned things about New York /Manhattan that we'd never heard before and it gave us a really interesting perspective on this great city and its rich history. We only had a day to spend in New York so it was probably too much to try to do this tour and other things on the same day. Our kids (ages 11 and 12) were exhausted after two-and-a-half hours of pretty solid walking so we needed recovery time which we hadn't planned on. It would have been nice to leave some of the tidbits out so there would be more time to explore some of the neat sites like Trinity Church and St. Paul's Chapel, as well as Fraunces Tavern. The pictures that the guide brought along were very informative, and her stories and quotes from famous New Yorkers from that time were valuable in illustrating that age. Great tour!!

Great if a little long for kids

Karen was a great tour guide, and knew much more than she could cover in a 3 hour tour. The only drawback was that the tour took nearly 3 hours, which was a little long for my kids.

This tour made the revolutionary era come alive!
Mon, May 29, 06   10:00 AM joeandliz Male 50-59 Local Family With Children
My family and I have taken many historical tours in different parts of the USA and this by far was one of the best. The reason was that the tour guide, Karen, was not only very knowledgeable but also passionate about history. The tour was listed as taking 2 1/2 hours and actually lasted 3 hours. The 3 hours flew by and we would have enjoyed listening to Karen for another 3 hours. Our 14 year old son said he also enjoyed the tour and learned great a deal. I recommend this tour to anyone interested in American History.
