The Rudest Tour Guide(owner) Ever! Civil War Era Walking Tour of Lower Manhattan

It took us 30 minutes to find the meeting place - the NYC Police couldn't figure it out either, but eventually we stumbled on the location. We expressed our difficulties finding the meeting place, and several others in the group expressed similar concerns. Then the Owner/Tour guide said the directions were "easy to understand," but we and others noted that they were not, and those of us who speak English as a second language had particular difficulty with following them (not to mention the cab driver, MTA employee, and the traffic police officer). She actually told us that maybe we should just get our money back since we wouldn't understand the tour anyhow since we couldn't understand the directions to find the meeting spot ... since English was not our first language and we were not able to follow her perfect instructions. Apparently, those of us whose first language is not English are too stupid to participate in this activity. We decided to give her a chance to redeem herself, but she continued to be rude during the tour and probably worse, the majority of her content was not civil war era information. We paid for a civil war era history tour, but instead more than 50% of the information she presented pertained to after 1900 and much of it regarded architecture. We left during the last 15 minutes because the rudeness directed at us never let up. BTW, I am a retired American history professor . This tour guide/owner needs to work on her civil war information, customer service orientation, and manners.

My husband and I are in our mid and late sixties. We don't do so well just ambling around. This tour gave us a focus to see the financial district as well as the battery and also to learn of New York City's role in the revolutionary war. If asked before this tour if George Washington and his forces were on Manhatten I would have probably said no. I learned a lot and enjoyed this tour.

The tour was great from the beginning. The guide holds the tour size to 15 participants that makes it possible to interact and in fact actually hear the tour guide. The other tour (Big Onion I believe) that was leaving at the same time must have had over 40 people in it and was basically a mob. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable, personable and easy to understand. The tour itself was well organized and very informative. We learned numerous facts that we did not know about the Revolutionary War especially about New York's involvement. The tour stayed on schedule and ended right on time. I certainly enjoyed my Civil War Walking Tour. My guide was very informative and friendly. I liked that she had pictures and newspaper articles from the era we were discussing as they made everything much clearer in regards to the demographics of that time and the present. I would highly recommend this tour to other Civil War buffs, and I plan to take her Revolutionary War tour if I return in the future.

this was one of the most enjoyable mornings I have had in a long time. Karen is very well prepared with the background, and history, of New York, during the Revolutionary Era. I am fairly familiar with lower Manhatten, but I learned a lot more. This is a very rewarding activity, and I have already recommended the tour to several of my friends, and business associates. The guide was knowledgeable and very cordial, ready for any question. While the tour is packed with interesting highlights, the pace is comfortable and unhurried. Whether your interest in this historical period is casual (at least a little prior knowledge is recommended) or specialized, you will come away having learned more. The guide makes a point of adjusting her commentary according to the background and interests (warfare, politics, commerce) of the individuals taking the tour. Well worth the time and money.

Wow! Our guide really knew her "stuff". She was friendly and took a lot of time to give us a really wonderful tour. Her insight and knowledge of the sites and related material on the tour made a very informative and fun time for us all. We live in a very historical part of Northwest Pennsylvania near Lake Erie and it was nice to get the "East Coast" point of view about this important time in our nation's history. BRAVO!!

Seven good friends were in absolute agreement that the tour was the best. Karen gave us such a good understanding of what went on in New York before and during the Revloutionary War. We all came away in awe of the courage of the people of New York and the founding fathers.

Our guide provided a wonderful supplement to what histories we've read regarding a period in history that was revolutionary not only on our continent but in Europe as well. Walking the ground provided a feel for forces at work within a very small area that influenced the thought processes, strategies and tactics of both military and political leaders in the years that led up to the American Revolution. Seeing the terrain as it was in 1775 through the revolution, you gain an up close feel for the worries and frustrations that faced Washington, Howe, and Clinton when they considered their strategies. We came to appreciate the importance to both sides represented by New York and its harbor. Our guide wove into the story of New York the influences of the colonies to the northeast by personalities such as John Adams and Samuel Adams, and the colonies from the south through personalities such as George Washington as commander of the continentals. Our guide provided insight into some of the more interesting New York native personalities who posititioned themselves to be successful no matter what the outcome of the war. We developed a great deal of respect for these characers who worked for the welfare of their families no matter what ,and who played key roles in slowing the progress of the British and provided invaluable intelligence to the rebel cause. Our guide was knowledgeable on the terrain and how it affected both the British and American forces; the landmarks in lower Manhattan that date to the Revolutionary era and the roles they played as a backdrop to the revolution; and the personalities at work during the period -- famous personalities, infamous personalities, personalities of local fame, and personalities little mentioned in highschool and college history books. We're looking forward to the Civil War tour in a future trip to New York

The tour owner /guide was pleasant, answered any and all questions and provided us with an enjoyable tour. She was very knowledgeable as she talked about not only the events of the Revolution as they were connected to New York, but also shared tidbits about some of the people involved in the historical events. I think we will take her Civil War tour in the future

Our Civil War guide would probably enjoy some of the walking tours offered in Charleston, SC. Civil War was not all about slavery. States and individual rights very much a part of the conflict, as was (is) the propensity of Northern Protestant clergy to know best for all. On the whole, we enjoyed our tour. This was an excellent and enjoyable walking tour. All four in our party enjoyed the experience. The key to the quality of the tour was our tour guide, Karen, who has a great depth of knowledge, and a pleasing way of conveying the information. Karen is excellent. If you have any interest in the Revolutionary War i would highly recommend this tour given by Karen Ken Lewis
