Thoughtfully links the modern city to theCivil War

| This tour was well constructed and covered a variety of Civil War topics. The story about General Daniel Sickles and his ties to New York was interesting. Would have been great to hear more about New York's contribution to the War - i.e. how many regiments came from New York, how many men enlisted, and some famous individuals. The information about the 1863 draft riots was revealing - it would have been great to get more details on this, some example incidents during it, and how it changed the city afterwards. Overall, the tour provides a good introduction to an admittedly large subject matter that could support an even longer tour and route. | ||||||

| Karen is the best. She has done extensive research to provide her clients with not only a historically interesting tour but her knowledge of and enthusiasm for the subjects are infectious. She manages to bring the history of New York alive with the stories of the people involved. This is NOT just a sight seeing tour that tells you a few facts and points out a few old buildings, you feel immersed in the events of the day. I have been to New York City twice and have taken the Civil War and Revolutionary War Tours, they are a highlight of both of my vacations. I look forward to going back to see what Karen has added to the line up. Dr. Curtis R. Wheatley | ||||||

A Well-Conceived Tour

| The Revolutionary Tour walk was a pleasure. It hit the sights I expected to see in downtown Manhattan, while also mixing in a few pleasant surprises and out-of-the way places along the way. It was clear that the route and the locations we visited had been given a lot thought by the company, which was great to see. The tour guide was also very knowledgeable and provided a balanced mixture of factual events, description of people, appropriate context, and the occasion myth or lore to keep us honest. She was an excellent guide because she was clearly knowledgeable, but also passionate about her subject. She actively engaged with us individually and shared more tidbits as we walked between stops. The tour also was well-paced: we visited about 12-15 sites during just over 2.5 hours, which allowed for a steady pace, but without any feeling of being rushed. My slight criticism is that the tour was a bit weak on the military history of the period. For instance, no mention was made of the fact that the Stamp Tax and other events leading to the outbreak of war were directly related to the British Empire's large debt from fighting The Seven Year's War, much of which happend in North America. Also, the tour guide was inaccurate or vague on a few dates she mentioned regarding the battles fought in the New York City area. She also stated that the Battle of Monmouth in 1778 was the first time Washington was victorious in battle against the British. Technically, that fight was a draw. Most people attribute his earliest victories to Trenton (against the Hessians) and to Princeton (against the British), both in 1777. However, this should not overshadow the professionalism of the guide and the well-executed tour. For anyone serious about history and the American Revolution, I'd recommend this tour because it's more in-depth and comprehensive than Big Onion's competing tour, which I've also taken. Bravo to Patriot Tours - well done! | ||||||

| Having been on several walking tours that covered the Revolutionary Era in Lower Mahhattan, my hat off is off to the Patriot Tours version of this tour. While all the other tours I've been on ranged from commendable to excellent, the Patriot Tours tour was the best in that it provided the most depth of this era in NYC history and the guide was the most knowledgeable about this time period. Not only did she provide specific details about each site we stopped at along the tour but she also offered extremely interesting additional details as well, which indicated that she was well versed and well read in NYC history during the Revolutionary War era. I would highly recommended this tour to anyone who wants to know all the key facts and anecdotes, well known and not so well known, about the Revolutionary Era in New York City. | ||||||

| I certainly enjoyed my Civil War Walking Tour. My guide was very informative and friendly. I liked that she had pictures and newspaper articles from the era we were discussing as they made everything much clearer in regards to the demographics of that time and the present. I would highly recommend this tour to other Civil War buffs, and I plan to take her Revolutionary War tour if I return in the future. | ||||||

| this was one of the most enjoyable mornings I have had in a long time. Karen is very well prepared with the background, and history, of New York, during the Revolutionary Era. I am fairly familiar with lower Manhatten, but I learned a lot more. This is a very rewarding activity, and I have already recommended the tour to several of my friends, and business associates. Keep up the Great work. | ||||||

| I found this tour to be pretty much exactly what it was advertised. The guide was able to give in depth history on the sites where we stopped and answer most of the questions posed. I never felt rushed or hurried. The tour was able to give me a good sense of what the area might have looked like during the time focused on. | ||||||

Wealth of Information and Knowledgable Leader

| Our tour leader knew so much about the New York area and it's various political, historical, cultural and social differences. The Civil War tour was great for history buffs, but also a great resource for teachers. If you can take this tour and present it to your class or better yet take them on the tour, it is really worthwhile. You will see many little streets that you would never walk through when visiting New York City. I have been to the city several times and had never seen some of the places we visited. Our tour leader is obviously well-read and has many interesting visuals to add substance to the times she is telling you about. I enjoyed this very much! | ||||||

| Karen Quinones of Patriot Tours is a walking encyclopedia... with personality. Her knowledge of the people and events that shaped New York City during the Revolutionary War era is impressive, and her passion for the subject is infectious. She clearly has a love for this period in history and has researched it well. We took our time, winding through the streets of lower Manhattan, while her attention to detail made every story come alive. I happened to take a tour with her on a particularly cold and windy day, but this did not prevent me from enjoying the experience. Never once was I bored or distracted, even though I live in Manhattan. Accompanied by copies of old maps, broadsides, and historic engravings, Karen's enthusiasm and vivid descriptions enabled me to "see" the original shoreline of Manhattan, the fervent efforts of the Sons of Liberty, the quaint homes that lined the narrow streets, and Washington's retreat from the British... and much more. I intend to take a tour with her again (in warmer weather) -- she is just that good! | ||||||

| I have a confession to make -- I'm a walking tour addict. I've been on at least two-dozen different walking tours in London, a half dozen in New Orleans, and another half dozen in NYC. So I've been exposed to dozens of different tour guides, each with their own style and breadth of knowledge. The Civil War walking tour of NYC is far and away one of the best I've ever been on. I've been on the World Trade Center walking tour, and it's a joke compared to this one. If you're an American history buff, you'll eat this stuff up. Karen has gone to great lengths to not only research the era she talks about, but also to obtain copies of documents, paintings, newspapers, drawings, and cartoons of the period. For 2 solid hours she passes along more historical information than you can believe. If only history class had been this interesting when I was in high school I might have paid more attention! As Karen leads you through lower Manhattan, you'll gain a new perspective on the Wall Street and City Hall areas. I could almost see the way things looked 150 years ago, thanks to the visual aids Karen brings along. Nearly every step of the way she points out a fascinating artifact, architectural detail, or geographical oddity. I learned more about Manhattan in those 2 hours than anyone born and bred in Manhattan even knows! I should also add that I had the luxury of a private tour, given that I made my reservation during the slowest time of the year and somewhat inclement weather. Karen graciously gave me the full tour with just as much enthusiasm as if the tour had been fully booked. I was also fortunate enough to spend some time after the tour discussing other aspects of politics and history with her, and I can say that she really does know her stuff. She was familiar with many obscure details of American history that few people I know are aware of. She is clearly passionate about what she does and really puts her heart and soul into it to give you the very best tour possible. If you are at all interested in the history of NYC or its role in the Civil War, this tour is an absolute must. You will not be disappointed, trust me! | ||||||
