As a local resident, a short distance across the river, it was interesting to learn so much history about the Lower East Side. I cannot count the number of times I visited the area and new nothing about the history of the area! Also, on the tour, we were taken to little areas of the Lower East Side that I was not aware of. The tour it full of interesting information. The tour guide was a wealth of knowledge. I would recommended this tour for history buffs and local residents that are interested in learning about their neighborhood!

We learned so much, which says a lot for two people who grew up in the New York City area. Karen, the tour leader, knew her stuff and was HIGHLY informative and we look forward to taking her other tours. We highly recommend Patriot Tours!

My co-workers and I enjoyed this very informative and fun tour of lower Manhattan and the Civil Era. Our guide was very well informed and very energetic. She provided so much fascinating info many "history" buffs may not have known about that time period. Highly recommend it and we look forward to joining another tour by this company.

We had such a great time on the Revolutionary walking tour. Having lived in NY all of my life it was fun to step back into time and learn the history of NY during the American Revolution. The tour leader was not only extremely informative she was a fantastic storyteller and captivated the group as she recounted historical events, anecdotes and helped to put you in the mindset of the folks living during revolutionary times.

A Well-Conceived Tour

The Revolutionary Tour walk was a pleasure. It hit the sights I expected to see in downtown Manhattan, while also mixing in a few pleasant surprises and out-of-the way places along the way. It was clear that the route and the locations we visited had been given a lot thought by the company, which was great to see. The tour guide was also very knowledgeable and provided a balanced mixture of factual events, description of people, appropriate context, and the occasion myth or lore to keep us honest. She was an excellent guide because she was clearly knowledgeable, but also passionate about her subject. She actively engaged with us individually and shared more tidbits as we walked between stops. The tour also was well-paced: we visited about 12-15 sites during just over 2.5 hours, which allowed for a steady pace, but without any feeling of being rushed. My slight criticism is that the tour was a bit weak on the military history of the period. For instance, no mention was made of the fact that the Stamp Tax and other events leading to the outbreak of war were directly related to the British Empire's large debt from fighting The Seven Year's War, much of which happend in North America. Also, the tour guide was inaccurate or vague on a few dates she mentioned regarding the battles fought in the New York City area. She also stated that the Battle of Monmouth in 1778 was the first time Washington was victorious in battle against the British. Technically, that fight was a draw. Most people attribute his earliest victories to Trenton (against the Hessians) and to Princeton (against the British), both in 1777. However, this should not overshadow the professionalism of the guide and the well-executed tour. For anyone serious about history and the American Revolution, I'd recommend this tour because it's more in-depth and comprehensive than Big Onion's competing tour, which I've also taken. Bravo to Patriot Tours - well done!

Kudos for Revolutionary Walking Tour of Manhattan

Having been on several walking tours that covered the Revolutionary Era in Lower Mahhattan, my hat off is off to the Patriot Tours version of this tour. While all the other tours I've been on ranged from commendable to excellent, the Patriot Tours tour was the best in that it provided the most depth of this era in NYC history and the guide was the most knowledgeable about this time period. Not only did she provide specific details about each site we stopped at along the tour but she also offered extremely interesting additional details as well, which indicated that she was well versed and well read in NYC history during the Revolutionary War era. I would highly recommended this tour to anyone who wants to know all the key facts and anecdotes, well known and not so well known, about the Revolutionary Era in New York City.

A WONDERFUL MORNING

this was one of the most enjoyable mornings I have had in a long time. Karen is very well prepared with the background, and history, of New York, during the Revolutionary Era. I am fairly familiar with lower Manhatten, but I learned a lot more. This is a very rewarding activity, and I have already recommended the tour to several of my friends, and business associates. Keep up the Great work.

Fascinating way to spend time in NY

My husband chose the Revolutionary War Walking tour as a way to enjoy our free afternoon in NY. I wasn't sure it would be as much fun for me, but decided to go along. This tour turned out to be so detailed and interesting that I had as much or more fun than my husband did. The facts that the tour guide presented were not dry , boring statistics. She had fully researched her talk and included many intimate little verbal portraits of how life was during the 1700's. She also had illustrations and maps to show us how NY looked at the time. I had never even considered what NY looked like before it was NY. The tour ended up being nearly 3 hours due to the thoroughness of the information given at each of the sites we visited. The actual walking was not strenuous and we even got to sit for a while at one location. We plan to schedule a day for the Civil War tour given by this same guide as I anticipate another afternoon of exciting facts and good conversation with her. She really knows her stuff. Highly recommend this to both history buffs and those, like myself, who have forgotten more than we ever knew. about the Revolutionary War. ( thanks the Mailman family.)

Much more to NYC than meets the eye

It was Memorial Day and myself and some friends thought a historical tour would be a great way to learn more about New York City. We live here but we knew that there is so much history that we pass by every day without knowing any better. We hoped the tour would enlighten us and we were not disappointed; it easily surpassed our expectations. The reason was our excellent tour guide, Karen, who did a great job of not only teaching us some of the history of the city, but did it in a way that kept our interest throughout the entire tour. This was largely due to her style of mixing in stories alongside pointing our various buildings and landmarks. I only wish my history classes had been run like this. I probably would have learned a lot more back then if they had.

Not for young children
Sat, May 26, 07   1:00 PM Taz0221 Female 30-39 Local Family With Children
My husband and I brought our seven year old daughter on this tour because she watches Liberty Kids about the Revolutionary War, and learned a little bit about it in school. We all thought this would be a great way to understand the war better and learn a little bit more of what happened in our city. What we found was information that was way over her head. We didn't finish the tour because she was so bored and really didn't care about the sites. The tour is NOT ment for young children as they have a short attention span and it wasn't fun for her. I think this tour would have been fun for her had there been some kind of brouchure with activities on it for her. We took her to Ellis Island and they have a little brouchure that kids use along with the tour that make it fun for the kids. I think this would be a good idea to use for this tour as well. As for my husband and I we would love to take the tour again without our children. Even though we left early, we found the tour to be full of information and the tour guide was very nice. She was really great at answering questions not just about Manhattan but about the other boroughs in the city and what roll they played in the war.

Seven good friends were in absolute agreement that the tour was the best. Karen gave us such a good understanding of what went on in New York before and during the Revloutionary War. We all came away in awe of the courage of the people of New York and the founding fathers.
