Be Prepared!

You will have an okay time if you are prepared, but if not, you will definately be miserable! I had 2 pairs of pants, 3 shirts and 2 sweatshirts on and was still freezing! I recommend wearing rubber boots! All other types of shoes will get soaking wet. Also, even if you have been on boats before in the ocean (which I have many times), this is soooo different because there are long periods of time when the boat is not moving forward, just swaying back and forth. You better take nausea medication before hand! Neither my son or I got to fish because we were too sea sick (along with 8 other people). It was the longest 6 hours of my life! Also, there's only 2 guys to help on the boat and they pack the boat full!!!! You are literally shoulder to shoulder with everyone. One good thing is, you can take beer/food/etc. in an ice chest with you. Also, guaranteed to catch fish!

Fun Fishing Trip - Excellent Fishing - Great Day

I was skeptical about taking my five-year old son on a deep sea fishing trip, but now I am glad we had the experience. Randy's had salmon and cod boats, I picked the cod trip because I knew the fishing would have more action. They had everything we needed the morning of the trip, and confirming our reservation and boarding was easy. The boat was set up well for group fishing, seemed modern and reliable with no problems. The boat captain and deck hand were obviously well experienced and knew exactly how to help everyone catch their limit and have a great time. I had not been ocean fishing in almost 20 years, and did not remember anything about the pole, rigging, or tackle, and it did not matter because these guys made it all super easy, (just rent their pole and don't worry because almost everyone else on the boat rents the pole and tackle anyway). The ocean was a little choppy the day we went out (6-22-12) and both my son and I got seasick because we took the dramamine too late, but we still had a great time catching fish. We both got limits, went home with a bunch of fish ready to grill or fry and eat. I was mostly impressed with the staff: the captain and fish/deck hand were superb. They both knew exactly what to do at all times and were very helpful with all of the passengers. The cod trip was back in about 7 hours and we had a super day. I was skeptical about taking my son, and he was the only child on the boat that day - but the captain and crew were very accommodating and I will probably take my other son and daughters on similar trips now. This trip was an exceptional value for the experience and I recommend Randy's any day.

I boarded the Chabasco this morning for my first cod fishing adventure. I have to say I was extremely nervous about doing this alone especially since I had no clue of what I was doing. The staff from the person in the shop to the crew was very helpful and courteous. I caught myself a nice Ling and some Rockfish. I am one of those people who constantly gets seasick but not this time. The skipper made the ride very enjoyable. Some of the other passengers were very helpful as well. The lone deckhand was Josh and I have to say this guy was awesome. There were quite a few tangles and he handled them quick and got everyone back to fishing in no time. After getting my fish cleaned I left Josh a decent tip and trust me, it was well worth it and he earned it. I would like to thank the staff at Randy's for their help and patience with a first timer like myself. I will definitely be going back. See you all again on the 6-16-12!!!!!!!!!!!!

Crappy trip but we made the most of it

A group of family went out on this fishing trip. The weather was horrible, it was cold and drizzly and the sea was rough. I'm surprised they didn't cancel the trip. We were getting bad weather from a hurricane down in Mexico. The fishing wasn't good at all. I believe only 2 people out of maybe 15 caught their limit. Most people only caught one or two fish. I only caught one I couldn't even keep. I do not blame either of those things on Randy's fishing. Everyone said the weather impacts how the fish bite. Even our deck hand said he hadn't seen a day that bad. We had the trip planned a month in advance and couldn't cancel at the last minute because of the weather. I do however hold Randy's responsible for the attitude of their employees. The guy taking tickets in the office before we left was extremely rude and didn't want to answer our questions. Then we get on the boat and the deck hand is a total jerk as well. He did help people and he was good at his job but his attitude sucked. He was rude and condescending the entire trip. At the end the captain told us that he (the deck hand) would be filleting fish once we docked and that he didn't get paid to work on the boat, he only worked for tips. In my opinion, someone who works solely for tips should be a whole lot nicer. We tipped him well because he filleted well. We had a good time having lots of family together, but it certainly wasn't a great trip. We paid a lot of money to go on this trip and it made all of us really angry to be treated like crap. We plan to go fishing out of Monterey again but we will NOT be using Randy's. I'm sure there are other places on the Wharf that would be more enjoyable. If you don't mind rude people then you might enjoy yourself on their boats.

Salmon Fishing

I signed up for a cod fishing trip, but was called a day before the trip informing me that there wasn't enough people signed up...so it was cancelled. Fortunately, they had a salmon trip going out the same morning. Since I was traveling from out of state, I couldn't reschedule. I had a great time, and caught my limit. The best salmon I have ever eaten! If you haven't been on one of these trips before, I strongly recommend wearing several layers of clothing, as it get very cold, and being on a boat for eight hours in the cold can be miserable if you aren't prepared. Wear something with a hood to cover your ears. Also, people got sea sick, as the boat is constantly moving up and down, and side to side. Be sure to take something to prevent sea sickness, or you might be leaning over the side quite a bit. No food or water is available on board, so bring your own if you think you might get hungry of thirsty. We brought sandwiches and water, but didn't eat anything. My stomach was getting queasy , so I didn't dare eat. Plus, we were so focused on fishing, we didn't really take a break. Bring a large ice chest to leave at the dock. You will need it to carry your fish home. The deck hand will clean your fish on the way back to the wharf. I recommend paying him to fillet your fish. The deck hands are great. They know what they are doing and will show you how to do everything. They will tie your hooks, show you how to fish, net your catch, tag and store your fish so you have the fish that you catch, and clean and fillet the fish. Check in takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on how many fisherman show up. You can buy snacks, and have a cup of coffee before departing. All in all, it was a great experience, and hope to do it again sometime. Just be sure to have a back up plan in case the trip is cancelled.

We had a BLAST!

My brother in laws and I had a great time! We caught our limits and then helped the boat catch theirs! The deckhand "Josh" was awesome! He can untie a knot that I would have cut off, cuts bait, cleans the fish, and even helped save a pelican that had a hook in it's mouth! The seas were rough but we all had a great time! I would suggest this activity to anyone that can stand the ocean. Jeff-Prunedale, CA

Zerve over booked the boat and it madw it very difficult. We had to change date personally with the outfit and communications got complicated. Randy's helped the best they they could. It was your end that screwed things up. Next time I'll just contact them directly if possible.
