Go for Randy's or Princess

When we arrived at Randy's they told us that they didn't have enough people for one of their boats. They told us that they combined forces with Princess tours and that we would be going out with the Princess crew and their guests. I liked the fact that Randy's combined resources with princess instead of taking an empty boat out. The princess crew did their best but whales cannot be summoned on demand. We had one viewing of a large grey whale which was spectacular. It was nice day and the boat ride was nice with beautiful views of the shoreline. For die hard whale watchers I would recommend people going out during a season when whales are more prevalent. If your more realistic and understand that animals are animals and do not exist for your viewing pleasure, then enjoy the ride regardless of whether you see anything.

I chose Randy's because they allowed dogs on their tours if it wasn't too crowded and I like to support pet-friendly businesses. The entire operation (from the nice lady that checked us in to the "salty dog" skipper who provided information about whales while we waited and watched) was very friendly. It was clear they not only made their living off of the ocean, but had great respect for it. The one thing they could have done better was provide more info and "Fun Facts" about whales. There was definitely an educational aspect to the trip, I just wish it had been more so. All in all, still a really good time.

We got to see some humpback whales within about 100yrds. My only complaint was that the tour was cut about an hour short because of other passengers getting sea sick.

Nice if not too choppy

We had a good trip but bare in mind that due to the size of the boat heavier seas will make viewing uncomfortable if you suffer from sea sickness. Our trip had the boat desk at around 45 degrees on several occasions.

We only paid $60 but got a great show. We saw 3 species of Dolphins together which i heard was very rare but we also saw 3 humpbacks about 30 yards away! one even jumped out of the water! As the captain said the whales were "showing off"! Highly recommended!!

Where were the whales?

We went on a trip with Randy's on May 9, 2009. The reception at Randy's shack was very friendly; then we were allowed to go to the deck behind the shack from where we could see the sea lions which was very nice. The checking in procedure at the actual boat went quite smoothly, the woman who was going to be our 'guide' was very enthousiastic and knowledgeable. The actual trip was a bit of a disappointment; not because of the staff or the boat itself but only because we saw one whale! However, you can't blame the organisation for this and they warn you for things like this on their website. In our case the probable cause was the presence of killer whales in the area so the humpback maybe went a bit shy. The ride was a bit rocky as well due to strong winds which caused high waves. The staff were very helpful though in providing tablets and bags for passengers who got ill and they also cleaned the toilet on a few occasions as some of the passengers didn't make it to the end of the boat... All in all I can't fault the organisation on anything, just a big shame that the whales didn't show up!

This whale watching tour was very exciting. We got to see a whale breach the surface of the ocean and then resurface numerous times. Make sure you go when the weather is calm and there are few swells. We took a three our excursion and would recommend a shorter one but that might be because it was windy the day we went. The skipper (Bill) was friendly and socialized with the passengers on board his vessel. Recommended for all ages.

Whale watching review

The holding area was a bit strong with a fishy/garbage smell but had a nice viewing of the sea lions. The boats seemed to be a bit smaller than other tour groups and filled up quickly. The tour was not for the faint of heart with a choppy ride out, and quite rough when the boat stopped for the viewing. A majority of the boat got ill, which was not a pleasant experience but understandable. The crew was great with a biologist on hand to explain what we were seeing and available for questions. The captain clearly explained his intentions and added to the experience.
