The excursion out to the open waters off the California coast was exceptional. The water was blue and clear. Dozen of dolphins, in fact 3 species, made a special show and delighted all persons aboard Randys' rig. We saw many whales and had fun trying to guess their whereabouts as they spouted their blow hole and returned down below the surface. I felt the cost of the trip was well worth the fun and memories that will last a life time.

This was great trip took my son for his birthday we had a great time and limited out. Jason the deck hand was first rate and so was the captain. They had great equipment and took care of everything. Looking forward to my next trip!

I go to monterey once a year to fish and this was the best trip yet. The Captain knew were to go so that we were able to catch our limits. The deck hand " Joey " was outstanding. Thanks " Monterey Star " for a great fishing trip !

We booked with Randy's but because their boats were full, we were sent to one of Chris's boats - the Star of Monterey. Our group consisted of four sisters from Sacramento and the Bay Area. Two are experienced and two are novice fishermen. It was an overcast day, water fairly calm, no white caps. The trip out to Big Sur took approximately 2 hours. The captain was great, he located a school of rock cod and from what I could see, everyone hooked up right away. Once the action slowed, the captain had us reel up and he found us another school in no time. We were "speed fishing" all day. The boat was fairly full and our lines tangled with some of the other fisherman's which is common. Our deckhand Joey was awesome. He was everywhere at once untangling lines, helping us unhook fish and making sure everyone had a good time. A number of people got sea sick, but everyone went home with their limit of fish. I would recommend this trip to anyone that likes to fish or wants to learn. The captain and deckhand will teach you everything you need to know to catch fish, you just need to listen.

We were a group of 7 (3 cousins and 4 friends). We had a blast. Caught the limmit despite some technical difficulties with the gear (of our own doing of course lol). The deckhand was great about everything and especially quick to get our gear working again. I like the fact that we were able to bring our own beer and grub on board and there wasn't a laundry list of do's and don'ts (no doubt there is but all the passengers were extremely well behaved so that always helps). Very professional staff that didn't treat you like an idiot even if sometimes we didn't know what we were doing. And most importantly we were allowed to smoke cigarettes on board. The $10 to clean the fish did not feel like a rippoff and was well worth it. WE WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK. PS. To the guy that made the comment about the deckhand before the trip started, what the hell are you talking about? He was a good guy all the way around.

At first I was skeptical that all would catch their limits since I have heard many of the better fisherman simply donate their fish to the needy. However, I have to say that even if you have never fished before it would be hard not to catch your limits. The capitan knows his stuff. Also the deckhand was extremely hepful. He would walk around helping you with whatever is necessary. The only con about this trip is the legnth it took us to get to the spot. It took us a little over 2 hours to get there. It was somewhere near Big Sur. Bottom line, if you have never done deepsea fishing or fished before, I HIGHLY recommend this.

We saw 2 humpback whales and a school of about 20 dolphins. The dolphins swam along side the boat. It was really amazing!

The overall trip was good but seas were very rough. Nothing Randy's could do about that. The fish were all small. Nothing Randy's could do about that. This was an annual birthday fishing trip for my yougest son [18] and was the 8th trip to Montery. The deck hand was very good and helped out the non-fisherman with ease and was alot of fun even though he would not make good tips because of all the sick people on board - 30 plus out of 40 plus. The cost of $67.00 is too much. Chris' is only $60.00 but he was booked up the week before for the day we chose. I paid for 5 so the extra $7.00 does add up. Also the fishing rigups were too costly.

We arrived half an hour early and the boat would be leaving half an hour late due to the mist, so we had a spare hour! The lady behind the desk was so friendly, we could take coffee as much as we liked and we could take a look at the sea lion dock! That was great, sea lions and pelicans so close! The trip on the boat was great as well. The captain asked us all to look around and try to spot whales or dolphins. He kept us informed when we spotted a whale behind us, told us why we didn't go back. And then we stopped just like that. Two humpback whales in the vicinity! We were told about their habits, how to photograph the famous tail, etc. It was amazing! And after that we left to check out three killer whales that were close! So we were very lucky. I would absolutely recommend Randy's Fishing Trips, we had a blast!

The day was pretty much perfect. The only recommendation I have is for the deckhand, Josh, not to say to clients on the boat "If you had listened to the captain, you would not have lost your rig", with a smartass tone. The first drop of the line and I immediately pulled up when the weight hit bottom so as not to get the rig caught on the bottom, yet it caught anyway. Josh took the pole and tugged until the line broke, then made a smartass comment about me not listening to the Skipper. I've been fishing with Randy's for the past 25 years, I think I can say I know not to leave the rig on the bottom, sometimes it just snags...that's fishing. In fact, that was the first rig I have lost in all my years of deep sea fishing combined, not just the 25 with Randy's. The comment was totally unnecessary. Save that for the teens who get on the boat (who surely don't listen) and treat your long time clients with respect. I won't say I will not return, because after 25 years...that would be foolish. A deckhand gets smart again, he's going overboard. See ya next year!

Randy didn't show. Instead, he combined trips with his competitor Chris. Theferore the review is for Chris. The Captain and his crew were gracious, helpful and competent. We all caught limits and were very well pleased.

Randy's Whale Watching has a smaller boat than some of the others available. The advantage of this is that we were not fighting for rail space to see the whales and dolphins. Had great views and were able to move about the boat with ease.

Staff was great, very helpful. Very patient, waited until everyone caught their limit. The fish were large, deckhand was AWESOME, everyone had a good time!
