My wife and I took the "Alliance" schooner sail trip and had a great time. We were on vacation for (2) weeks and this day was really one of our days we scheduled not to do to much except relax.. We ended up looking online for some relaxing things to do and came across an add about the sailing Yorktown. The weather was perfect and the sea breeze was awesome. The two young girls who were working the deck were very pleasant and knowledgeable, and I also spoke with the captain who was also very friendly and knowledgeable.
We were really able to relax sitting along the side of the ship and just take in the sights and we went below once for a soda and some snacks. Another thing we found surprising was we ended up having a very nice conversation on board with a young woman from England who was on vacation and a very nice husband and wife from Toronto who were also on vacation. We vacation in Virginia yearly but this was our first time taking the Sail Yorktown even though we have been to Yorktown in the past. On our next trip though we will take a sail again. We also each bought a souvenir t-shirt of the Alliance for around $17.00 which I felt was fair and reasonable.
Thanks for the enjoyable event, and we will definitely do it again. |

Captain Gregg & his crew are Welcoming and very Accommodating! His knowledge of local history is amazing! We live on the Atlantic so we frequent the water ways often in our own boat. This sail was a definite treat! The Alliance is very well maintained!!! Sailing with her was definetely the highlight of our visit to YorkTown! And, the price was extremely affordable!

We had a wonderful time on the Schooner Alliance. The crew was informative and helpful. Plus we had the pleasure of being escorted by a school of dolphins for most of the trip. Well worth the time and $$. |

The sail was fine but there was little wind so we drifted more than we actually sailed. A storm started coming and the one crew member had to climb up to the top to untangle something which was cool. The crew knew a lot about the history, the river, the buildings we could see from the ship. |

1) A service fee per ticket is my first complaint.
2) Tip jar and sign hinting to tip the crew members seemed out of place.
3) The tour itself was relatively boring. It would seem most people coming to Yorktown would be interested in history, so one would think the boat monologues would be slanted toward history and not other topics, or idle chatter between crew members.
5) Maybe part of the slowness of the trip was because the water was so calm the motor did most of the sailing.
4) I recall the web site mentioned 18th century houses we would see along the way. We were too far away from land to know what we were looking at, and i don't recall any such houses being pointed out.
5) The info about the nearby Navy and CIA training operations was informative.
6) All in all i think the 2 hours in the middle of the day (2pm-4pm) at $128.00 for 4 could have been spent more wisely. |

There were two things my husband and I were impressed with. First, when we arrived we didn't have tickets for the next sail which was in about 10 minutes. We were given a number to call, we purchased the tickets via credit card, the e-mail was automatically sent and we boarded in less than a minute. We were very impressed by how easily we were able to purchase the tickets and get receipt right there. Secondly, the crew; what a fun group. They were very knowledgeable concerning the waterways we were sailing, gave history and a great explanation of the sailing vessel to include allowing passengers to help set sails. My husband thoroughly enjoyed that. The sail was so relaxing, the crew so hospitable, we could have easily done it again had time allowed. We'll do it again when we return. Highly recommended!!! |
