Take the sunset tour, especially if you're going during peek summer months. You'll stay a bit cooler. If you decide on morning or afternoon cruises, bring sunscreen and a hat; they'll supply beverages. Cruises on this 105' three-masted schooner ship last 2 hours and you'll head either east or north-west along the scenic York river. The crew mates were fun, colorful and engaging all the way from the pre-sail safety briefing to debarkation. Captain Greg Lohse, however, never spoke a word. To be fair, once we were underway, he seemed to chat it up with those who made their way to the stern (back) where he takes the wheel. When returning, don't decide to stand up or change seating during the slow docking procedures, even if it means getting out of the crew's way. Captain Greg may rudely bark at you like a junk yard dog as he did me. The outburst was certainly out of line given the ship's lull just inches from the dock. |

We really enjoyed our afternoon sail on the Alliance. Our children (8 and 10) had the chance to help raise the sails as we set out. They also learned about the different parts of the schooner and how it works, all thanks to the crew members. The crew was friendly and very informative on the sights and history of Yorktown. Highly recommended! |

If you have young children who have never sailed on a schooner, this experience would be more enjoyable for you and more exciting for them. Unfortunately for us it was not very exciting - mostly because we live in this area and we don't have children who could have participated in raising the sails. The schooner doesn't travel very far out onto the river and so most of the time is spent just relaxing, socializing and viewing the same scenery which includes some historic buildings, an oil refinery and The Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
I would recommend this cruise to anyone who enjoys relaxing on the water and meeting others or for those who have children between 7-15 years old. It was really fun to watch the two children on our cruise raise the sails. I highly recommend it for first dates and for viewing fireworks on the 4th.
We went on the 11am cruise which can include a boxed lunch if you like- making it an interesting two hour lunch date. Be sure to bring a wind breaker if it's cloudy as it may feel much cooler than expected. |

The York River sail was a breath of fresh air!!! Very smooth sail. Crew very pleasant and professional. New Yorkers liked the hot dogs on board. Box lunch looked GREAT...wanted the huge cupcake. We did not sign up for one since we planned to eat at the Riverwalk following the cruise. I plan to book the cruise and lunch for my summer guests. A great event for families. |

Provide more commentary on the sites we were seeing. We only got a short description of the history of the area --- and that only after we asked questions the crew could not answer. |
