The ride was so very refreshing. Enjoyed seeing the sails go up, and how professional the crew was. I felt very safe and relaxed. I will definitely do it again.

The captain told us about a few things and then said that we should ask him any questions we wanted answered. He didn't tell us much about the river, unless we asked him. Most of the information was provided in response to our question. He didn't have a script of interesting facts to share.. Because there wasn't much of a wind we went very slowly under motor power. I wanted to bring my grandsons on the ship later on in the summer but feel the experience would be too boring for them.

We have never been on a sailing schooner before. It was very interesting to see exactly how much work is actually involved to get the sails up and to change them periodically. Great scenery. Crew was very professional and friendly. The captain was very knowledgeable of the area and would point things out to you if you were interested. Refreshments aboard were reasonably priced. A very relaxing ride. We would definitely do this again, and highly reccomend it to others.

Sailing on the Alliance

We were so pleased NOT to be on a typical tourist sightseeing tour, as we expected from what we knew. Two hours on the York River on a bonafide 3-masted schooner was wonderful--in the sunshine. Wouldn't want to do it in the rain--no place to hide for 30-40 people! Strenuous for us old folks, but if you're in good shape you should be okay--unless you need to go to the "head." Back yourself through the hatch and down a narrow ladder to the lower deck, no light but a skylight from the deck--quite arduous. No chairs or seats--just perch on the life-vest boxes, etc. You might enjoy helping the crew raise the sails, if you pull ropes okay--a couple of our middle-agers did this. Skipper knows his ropes. Ship 55 tons displ't ,105 ft. stem to stern. We had sunshine, 88 F temp. light to brisk winds, and an absolutely wonderful cruise. Everyone should be so lucky!

Mixed Sentiments

The boat was nice and the weather was great. A bit pricey for a 2-hour boat ride that never leaves sight of the dock. Capt. Greg was insightful, but rather rude and didn't seem to care for children being on his boat. Capt. Andy was outstanding and very engaging. He involved our children and welcomed questions. Our kids are VERY well behaved and we would never let them get out of hand. But it still felt like Capt. Greg didn't want them on his boat. Yorktown is a gorgeous harbor town and we enjoyed the cruise and visit. I'm not sorry we went, but I don't think I would pay $100 (plus tip) to do it again, it's just not worth that for a family with smaller children.

I had never been sailing before and happened to see the Alliance at the dock at Yorktown. We were vacationing in Williamsburg and were looking for activities to enhance our trip that would make it memorable and unique. The voyage on the Alliance proved to be just the ticket. We thoroughly enjoyed the outing and were very impressed with the friendliness and professionalism of the crew. I would however not get the boxed lunch as the trip is only 2 hours and snacks are available on board. I would definitely recommend this activity to anyone especially families. The water was very calm the day we sailed and rougher water may not be advisable for small children.

We really enjoyed our cruise on the Yorktown Alliance. The crew was very courteous, professional and attentive to details. They were full of information, esp the Capt of the vessel. He provided a lot of history about the area. We enjoyed the musical entertainment during the sail. The ship was well taken care of! It was a great, relaxing experience that I would recommend to anyone!

We had a beautiful day for sailing. The crew was friendly and laid back. We had a relaxing time. They let our two boys ( 10 and 11) hoist one of the sails. If you need to get away for two hours and relax, this will do the trick and then some. My father-in-law who is in his 70s enjoyed himself as much as the pre-teen boys
