Great Sail!

We had a great sailing experience - Capt. Greg was most accommodating in answering questions about the ship, the local area, etc., and pointed out interesting historical landmarks on shore. The boxed lunch from The Carrot Tree was delicious.

Nice outing, would go again on a windier day

Enjoyed the trip even though the lack of wind was a disappointment - but they can't control that. It was still fun as we got to help raise the sails, saw dolphins and shot off the small cannon during the trip which was exciting. It would have been better with a few less passengers and we left the dock a little late while they waited for more passengers which cut into our time. It said they would leave promptly at 11 am but we didn't end up leaving until about 11:30 and we still came back promptly at 1. Next time we will wait to see whether the wind is blowing and buy our tickets at the dock - just not as much fun to "sail" without the wind. But for the first time around would go whether the wind is cooperating or not just for the experience. Overall a good, fun outing and we would go again on a windier day. I would recommend it to others.

The tall ship ride along the York River was well worth it! Crew and Captain were friendly, organized and sociable. Thank you for making this event memorable for our family. Makaryk's in Ohio

While the weather didn't cooperate with our visit, the experience was great from the crew to the sail making it the best that it could be. Loved having the chance to be out on the York River, trying our hands at raising the sails, and seeing history from a different perspective. Thanks for a great trip!

This is the second sail on the Alliance for me. This time I took my husband and children. They had a GREAT time. We saw dolphins on the trip as well. A very fun activity for the family on our trip to Williamsburg area.

Alliance trip highlight of vacation

Our family planned our vacation in Williamsburg for 2008. We were blessed to have great weather. While researching our trip we found out about sailing on the Alliance. We were pleased that we could purchase our tickets online, in advance, thus guarenteeing the date and time we wished to set sail. Captain Greg and the crew were very knowledgeable about Yorktown and it's history, which enhanced the trip for our family. Our 14 year old and 9 year old were favorably impressed with the boat and our sail on the York River. This was indeed one of the highlights of our family vacation!

The captain and crew were alot of fun, knowledgeable and very friendly, we live in the area,,but had never been on the schooner before, This sail was relaxing,,fun and exciting all in 1!! We didnt have a very good day for the wind,,but it sure didnt make any difference. We will go on the sunset sail next and possibly book one of the 7 day sails in the islands come this winter! We highly recommend to everyone,,,dont miss a change to sail with Capt Greg and crew on the Alliance,,you will miss an opportunity of a lifetime!! Thanks for a FANTASTIC TIME SAILING ON THE ALLIANCE!!

Unfriendly, unprofessional, Cheap

The captian had an attitude. Told everyone to ask questions and then gave cocky, arrogant answers. Not much wind so we just sat in the river, too cheap to use gasoline. When weather turned a little, he rushed back in an half hour early. He needs to take a Dale Carnegie course or become a hermit.

You HAVE to do this - AWESOME Yorktown sail
Fri, Aug 8, 08   11:00 AM JustDandy Male 40-49 Domestic Tourist(s) Family Without Children
I recently got the chance to go for a daytime sail on the schooner Alliance. It's a beautiful, majestic, three masted schooner that sails out of Yorktown's Riverwalk Landing (which was also new to me - great place for eating, enjoying the water, beach, free parking - nicely done Yorktown!). This is the tall ship with sails that you can see from the Coleman bridge/Rt 17. Anyway, Captain Greg and his crew were just great and provided plenty of information when asked but didn't drone on in mindless narrative - you know what I mean? The sail was relaxing, peaceful, and there were dolphins playing in the river. What a great afternoon activity. This is a great complement to a day at Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, the forts at Jamestown, or visiting the Yorktown battlefields. All of this stuff is within an easy 30 minute drive of each other - I think they call it "America's Historic Triangle" or something like that. Oh, and don't forget to to hit the shopping at Williamsburg's outlets and Pottery factory stores. As for the Alliance, I'll be back for more sails and I'm bringing friends! I've got to try the sunset sails, too!

Great outdoor excursion

Living in the Richmond, VA area, trips to the Historic Triangle are often and varied. Although there are many attractions that one never tires of, they also are very similar in content and design. We had never done this sailing trip before and decided to do it on a whim. It was a fantastic day and we did the 11-1 trip. The weather was perfect and it was a great change from the typical historical outing. The captain and crew were very friendly and one of the highlights of the trip. They explained the rigging and offered the chance to particpate in setting the sails. They were chatty to the point of making one feel at easy without dominating or being condescending at even the most basic question. They explained anything and everything about the area, the ship. the techniques of sailing. It was nice that they did it as questioned rather than following a prescribed, lecture-type, format. This was a refeshing change from some of the attractions in the area. All-in-all, we would highly recommend it to families, couples, and elders. It might note that our trip had members ranging rom about 3 years old to seniors, yet all seemed to interact and enjoy. Lastly, we would recommend signing up for the boxed lunch--truly a surprising good lunch.
