We have been going whale watching in Monterey for many years now and my wife and I always return to Sanctuary Cruises for our whale watching adventures. Why would you leave from Monterey when the boats are overly crowded with tourists and the parking is tough to come by? Moss Landing is quiet, peaceful, and much more accessible....and most importantly? Our cruises with Santuary have ALWAYS provided us with incredible views of sea lions, otters, dolphins, and whales. On our last visit we were able to spend over 30 minutes watching a pack of orcas!! What a treat!!
Rating: 5 Saw Many humpback whales.

We were only 10 minutes into our cruise when we spotted our first humpback. Our captain cut the engine and we watched in awe as the whale came closer and closer to our boat before finally diving just a few feet away from us showing the beautiful fluke. We went on to see several more humpbacks, many of them in pairs. Also spotted an elephant seal, dozens of sea lions, seals, otters, pelicans....it was a fabulous experience. Unforgettable!! The captain and crew were friendly, attentive, and shared their knowledge with us. We learned so much and now have a much better understanding and appreciation for our friends in the sea. Thank you for this inspirational and beautiful experience....Mary S.

Experienced much more than we bargained for! the crew were very knowledgeable and friendly. Saw 3 humpback whales, 2 were mother and calf, which we were told is not a very common sight. We were also lucky enough to spot a rare sight of a pod of around 300+ dolphins made up of 3 different species of dolphin. This was an amazing sight and well worth the $40 alone. I would recommend the trip to anyone, however to keep in mind that we were just lucky to see what we saw, and this might not happen every time!
Rating: 4 Wonderful experience, but over-priced

Nice long tour of the bay, and we saw three humpback whales. The tour was supposed to include a naturalist, but there wasn't one. However, the pilot was very knowledgable, and he and the deckhand were very nice (both young). The boat was clean and neat. There wasn't any coffee or hot water for tea - both containers were empty. Overall, I'd recommend it, but it is definitely over-priced.

Early on in the trip we sited and followed a humpback. After leaving him we were unable to find more, possibly due to the unusual heavy fog that lasted almost to the end of the cruise. We did see the original humpback again, and we were treated to a beautiful breach. The crew was very knowledgeable and friendly and engaged us consistently. The boat was comfortable and was not too crowded. Definitely recommended for all interested in seeing whales firsthand.
Rating: 5 Great time but I got a bit sick.

My review is a little colored by the fact that I was not feeling very well for the last 1.5 hours of the trip. I was fine in the harbor with my accupressure bands, but once we headed out further the wind was up and it was choppy and not much to divert my attention from my stomach! Next time I'll definitely rent an electronic band. But our narrator captain was great and Hillary was a great spotter. Boat was comfortable enough. I was wishing the trip was only 3 hours, but I think that's because I wasn't feeling well at the end. I would appreciate some data about critter sightings by date so I can bring guests with some assurance about the number of contacts we'll have in a four hour time span. I'm assuming that you keep such data about what is sighted for each trip. Thanks for this opportunity to give you feedback.

We were the happiest boat out there, others were crowded or too small. Ours was just right. The captain knew what he was doing, made sure we all saw the whales - some as close as 10-15 yards! Thank you guys, great trip.

Since this is not a visit to a ocean animal themed amusement park, you cannot have expectations of seeing specific animals in the open sea. We did see a female and a calf humpback whale on our outing. It was exciting to be so close to such amazing creatures. My husband & I did not take our children, and I would caution parents to think carefully about doing so. The seas can be rough, and it is a four hour trip. A family that was on the boat with us had taken two young girls around 6-10 years old, both were sea sick within the first half hour and one did not get back up until we returned to land. That is a lot to put a child through. I strongly recommend the sea bands - just in case!!

We had a great day! First we saw a whale immediately. Then we spent three hours just boating around fruitlessly...kind of boring even. So then we decided to head back. Almost back at the harbor we saw a whale...VERY CLOSE UP! It came up under the boat!!!!!! Amazing! We will never forget it! The service was great, both captain and his assistant. Thanks!

Saw lots of whales...in a safe and friendly environment. A true gem of an experience. We will definitely do the Sanctuary Whale Watch again when we're in the Santa Cruz/Monterey California area again next year.
