Sanctuary Whale Watching Cruise

The day was beautiful but the seas were rocking and rolling and many passengers were sick even though they had taken medication prior to the trip. It was so rough that taking photographs was tough work and a bit disappointing. On the positive side, crew was great and the Captain took us right out to a whale feeding ground where we witnessed about 12 humpback whales showing off very close to our boat including a double breech.

This is the fourth time that we have gone out on Santuary Cruises. With the exception of our first trip, we have always seen whales and other wildlife and have always been well informed about what we were experiencing. The accommendations have always been comfortable and clean; but, most impressive is the enthusiasm, courtesy, and kindness of the crew. They go above and beyond to make each trip a wonderful experience and to be accommodating to special requests and questions. I will continue to go on Santuary Cruises every opportunity I get and to recommend their services to family and friends

All of the people in our group (9 people) were awed by the experience. We were surrounded by at least 6 humpbacks at one point in time. Smaller boat makes for a much more relaxed and intimate setting. if you are prone to sea-sickness I recommend the wrist bands..well worth it!

Sanctuary Whale Watching Cruise

We were very excited when we began our tour, and truly did not know what to expect. Our guide explained what we should be watching for to find the whales or dolphines, as we left the dock. He noted points of interest as we headed out into the bay. All passengers were watching for spouts of water or flocks of birds, which would indicate a whale(s) was near. It seemed as though we had been out for quite awhile, with no action at sea. Our guide was communicating with other boats and keeping us informed of the area. He also was explaining how it was necessary to respect the animals, and how several of the species were endangered. Suddenly he called a spout to our attention and we headed in the direction. We enjoyed watching 3 species of whales (7 whales in the group) feed, and were especially pleased that a mother and her calf were part of the show. From this point he was advised of some dolphines in the area, which he found. These five dolphines seemed to be racing with our boat, and chose not to be very social. Eventually we headed in the other direction. Once again we came upon the whales and enjoyed them for a bit longer. Now it was time to return to the dock. Our guide was very disappointed that our dophine encounter wasn't greater, and was explaing that there had not been many dolphins sited in the bay this year, when he noticed some playing in the distance. He sped up the boat and it was a feast for our eyes. There must have been hundreds of dolphines. He explained the three species we were seeing. Dolphins surrounded our boat, they were playing, jumping and almost smiling for the cameras. We must have spent 45 minutes or so being entertained by these beautiful creatures, before we began our return to the dock. We also had the fortune of seeing the Common Murr, Sea Lions and Seals. We and our teenage boys haven't stopped talking about our experience. We are showing pictures and telling everyone we know to take a Sanctuary Tour out of Moss Landing whenever they are in the area. You can rest assure we will certainly book another tour when we return to the area. One of the passengers we became acquainted with was an artists, and she told us she books a tour every couple of months. She told us that everytime when has been out there was some special occurence, and that she only booked with Santuary. The Corrin Family

We did the Saturday morning cruise with Sanctuary. The boat is very clean and it appears to be one of the smaller boats that go out in the Monterey area. The small size is a plus in addition to this boat being located in Moss Landing. You will be closer to the "whale action" and will not spend a big chunk of your time cruising to the best spots. The crew is very friendly and knowledgeable about the marine life. We started seeing humpbacks right after exiting the marina area. There were times when it seemed like we were surrounded by whales. It was a truly awesome experience!! There are other types of whales that are seen in the area and our captain really made a great effort to locate some killer whales, but we were not successful. There is not much anyone can do about that. We did come across a very cute sea otter that was having a leisurely float in the ocean. Of course, you will also see many types of birds and hundreds of sea lions. This is a great activity and was probably the highlight of our vacation. Three of us used the relief bands that you can rent from them for motion sickness. They really worked and I highly recommend that, too. We had pretty calm seas that day and I did not see anyone get ill. We went the last day of May and it was really cold on the water. Come prepared with layers, a hat and some gloves and you will be able to enjoy the experience even more. At the end of your cruise, the captain will give some restaurant recommendations for the Moss Landing area. We tried the Haute Enchilada which is right by the dock. It was very good and not expensive. I should also mention that many of the people on our cruise were locals and they do the whale watching on a regular basis. They said that they had tried others, but they felt that Sanctuary was the best. I agree with that and will be definitely be doing it again in the future.!

Sanctuary Cruises used to be super eco-friendly, including using biodiesel (not anymore). That used to be the biggest seller for our family. We've been on the Sanctuary at least a dozen times. The new captain Andy was informative but monotone the whole ride. We are lucky to have this Monterey Bay because it's always a thrill to go out there and see the whales. Andy was able to track them but I prefer hanging out with one group of whales for a couple of dives, not just look and leave. Andy did not do this for us.

Angel did a great job! Not only did he take care of those aboard, he also took great care of the environment that he showed us. It was something my wife and I will never forget. We feel truely fortunate to have shared this opportunity with someone who cares about these magnificent animals! It showed that Sanctuary Cruises is run by people with a love of the ocean and all of the creatures that inhabit it. We had a great day whale watching and I personally wanted to go again the next day! Thanks so much for the memories! Jeremy & Anne Minnesota

This is my 2nd time whale watching; first time with Sanctuary. My co-worker and I had a wonderful time! There were whales everywhere; we were only out of the harbor for a few minutes and we got our first "whale sighting". The amount of time (four hours) is perfect. My last trip in Monterey was only 2 1/2 which was not enough time. Our guide was excited as we were able to witness "whale slapping". He shared with us lots of information (sometimes hard to hear when the engines were running) - however, still very interesting! Water was rather calm considering how rough the waters were earlier that week - high winds which created lots of white caps. You do need to layer, bring crackers (for those light feeling tummies) and they do have coffee and hot chocolate for purchase as well as sea sickness bracelets. The boat was very clean, guides very helpful and concerned with the customers who were a little green around the gills, and "wowed us" with a wonderful experience! I look forward to another adventure with the Sanctuary! dmg

This was our fourth time with Sanctuary Cruises. I believe they are the best boat to go out on. We have gotten our money's worth and more every time. The crew is very knowledgeable about the whales they come across, and about the mammals in general. They treat the animals with respect and balance a tourist's desire to get close to these magnificent creatures without crowding them. That is not to say that they do not get close. They do, but it is on the whale's terms. The boat is large enough to accomodate 40 people and there is not a bad seat in the house. We have gone out in Oct., Dec. and May . Have seen whales every time. We will continue to book a trip with them whenever we go to Monterey. We have seen everything from sea lions, sea otters, jellyfish, several species of dolphins and of course whales. We even got to witness a rare double breach. If you are traveling to the Monterey area in California, be sure to look them up. You will not be disappointed.

The crew - Jane and Noel - were wonderful. We were fortunate to sight two humpback whales that seemed to be just as interested in us. Totally wonderful! Note - even if you aren't prone to motion sickness, take precautions. I was amazed to see how many people were getting sick. Luckily, my friends talked me into taking a pill, even though I'm not prone to motion sickness. I didn't get sick and had a terrific time!.
