Activity Description
Join us as we travel back in time on the Sandlapper on this one-of-a-kind historical Civil War cruise to Morris Island!  You'll leave both Charleston and the 21st century behind as we take in the sights and sounds that will make the past come to life!  The perfect way to reflect upon the upcoming 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War!

On this tour you will hear fascinating stories about:

  • The Star of the West - a civilian ship used by the United States government to secretly transport reinforcements and military supplies to Fort Sumter.
  • The Confederate occupation of the island.
  • The federal assault of July 18, 1863 and the shelling of Battery Wagner - in which a shell was thrown into the fort every thirty seconds for hours at a time.
  • The Union Occupation of the island.
  • The Immortal 600 - 520 Confederate soldiers used as human shields for 45 days.
  • And more!
Tour guides James Burns and Joseph McGill Jr. will immerse you in their knowledge of the Civil War history of Morris Island.  Watch as their stories come to life through a talk and Q&A session with both a Union and a Confederate soldier!

Whether you're a Civil War buff or just someone looking to learn about the rich history of the Charleston area, this is one tour not to miss!
