Description

If it's authentic Italian food and culture you seek in New York City, head to the Bronx's Arthur Avenue, where the Italian community of Belmont is as genuine as a hand-made sopressata.

Arthur Avenue is New York's "Other" (and more authentic) Little Italy.

Settled in the latter part of the 19th century by Southern Italian laborers, today the Arthur Avenue neighborhood is filled with butcher shops, sausage makers, cheese makers, seafood markets, bakeries with 19th century ovens, pasta stores, restaurants and produce markets. Generations of Italians still live, work and shop in this vital neighborhood; Italian is the daily language of trade, and the shop owners and their patrons interact as friends and members of their community.

On this tour, Savory Sojourns will introduce you to the people and places, sights, sounds - and most of all, tastes - that make Arthur Avenue so very special. We'll stop at:
  • Bread bakeries
  • Seafood markets
  • Salumerias
  • Pasta stores
  • Homemade cheese stores
  • And the fabulous indoor market where vendors sell the best in Italian-style produce, meats and more, at great prices.
Lunch will be served at a warm home-cooking style trattoria known for its pasta dishes and superb desserts. We will meet the chef and dine in a private room in the wine cellar. We won't just dine - we'll be treated like part of the family!
