A Great Experience

For starters, being a local, I knew what to expect weather wise. Fog in the morning, along with a chill; clearing in the afternoon. If you're not used to Santa Cruz weather, dress in layers. A jacket is best for the ride out into the bay; a light windbreaker for the trip back! For my fellow Scandinavians, or others with blue eyes and fair skin, bring along a sunscreen, even on light foggy days. Having lived in Santa Cruz for over 40 years, I forgot this basic rule and my face paid for it! On this type of trip, you must be patient! Unlike Seaworld, these whales, dolphins, sea otters and sea lions are not trained to perform for humans. You are a guest in their world and they will do what they want, when they want to! We didn't see whales until almost Moss Landing area. It was well worth the wait. A pod of four whales put on a show for us, with plenty of chances to take photos of their tails, blowhole sprays, and their bodies gliding through the water. Being disabled, I found the ship to be comfortable. When my disability required I sit, I had a choice of sitting indoors or outside on several ledges. The skipper and deckhand made this trip a delight. I forget the kid's name, but the deckhand made it a point to engage every guest in a converstation, leaving no one out! He also made it a point to state that the only dumb question is the one not asked! I liked that! From what I could see, this put everyone at ease and made it easy for total strangers to interact. I can't wait to take this trip again. Do yourself a favor and give this trip a try! You won't regret it. P.S.....DON'T FORGET TO TIP YOUR DECKHAND! Much like a tour guide, he runs around and works hard to give you a wonderful and informative trip. Don't be shy and show your appreciation!!!!!!

Breaching whales worth the seasickness
Sat, Jul 19, 08   10:00 AM bluedolphin Male 60-69 Combination Couple on a Date
It took some time and 16 miles before we found what we were looking for, and my wife and I both endured some nasty seasickness on the way back, induced partly by dehydration I think. But it was all worth it after finally getting some close up views of whales breaching out of the water. We also saw a few dolphins and a few otters, but the whales were definitely the prize. I'm not ready to go again just yet, but the crew ultimately found where the action was and offered some informative commentary as well.

Good Trip

I thought the whale watching trip was a very fun experience. We saw lots of beautiful dolphins and humpback whales. The tour guides did an excellent job educating us about the whales and gave out plenty of information. The only downfall was the choppy water and cold weather. I would strongly recommend this trip to others!

We saw a humpback whale breach way up out of the water and then rode next to a large group of Risso and Pacific White Sided dolphins for probably an hour! Incredible! Highly recommend it.

My children and I thoroughly enjoyed this experience. The boat was very nice and clean...although seating was limited. Mike was awesome! What a great young guy! He was always ready willing and able to help, share great sea stories and just a pleasure to be around. We enjoyed it so much that we signed on for a fishing trip that was equally as fun. I highly recommend it!

Good trip, reasonably knowledgable crew. Enjoyed tour of local sea mammals (California Sea Lions, Sea Otters (with pups!) almost as much as the successful whale watching.

The Stagnaros staff was courteous and efficient, from calling me in advance to confirm that they had my reservation, through the excursion itself. All went well! The dock facilities were fine, the boat was new and very nice, and the captain and crew were kind and knowlegeable. The marine life itself was spectacular! The weather wasn't great, but that's no one's fault. I had a little trouble finding the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf, but that may just be me. I was unfamiliar with the area.

This was a wonderful trip. The crew was knowledgeable. The best part where the numerous whales we saw. They were beautiful. The crew did a good job of staying with the whales while they were swimming.
