The Best Off-Off Broadway NYC Show!
Fri, Feb 16, 07   7:00 PM wileyveteran Male 20-29 Local Couple on a Date
Wow. This is one of the best New York shows I’ve seen. I was trying to get a good sampling of NYC culture, but also a taste of something off the beaten path. I had been to Broadway shows before. To me, seeing one Broadway show is the same as seeing another Broadway show. Too often they feel overgrown, stale, and self-obsessed. The real culture, the real cutting edge -I knew- was to be found in Off-Off Broadway theater. Steve Cohen’s magic show is one of the best New York City things to do. It is both vintage and fresh at the same time. His performance is strongly rooted in the tradition of parlor magicians, who were known for performing their wizardry in close-quarters, inches away from dumbfounded eyes. The show is held in one of the Waldorf’s beautiful, private suites, which –Mr. Cohen told the audience on the night I attended- had been home to Gen. MacArthur following WWII. No dark, dank performance theater here, Chamber Magic is an Off-Off-Broadway show that bucks the trend: a show (affordably!) awash in all the elegant magnificence of New York City chic. Perhaps the show’s ties to history, or simply its quiet refinement, are what –paradoxically- make it feel fresh and new. In this age of brash advertising, where Broadway shows are seared into your mind with neon gas and flashing lights, the word-of-mouth promotion of Mr. Cohen is a breath of fresh air. Only an illusionist of Mr. Cohen’s caliber can make the hustle and busy, the grit and the grime, and the noisy clamor of New York City streets instantly disappear. Do yourself a favor: look through the exaggerated hype of Broadway and see this unique Off-Off-Broadway show instead.

We could not have had a better time. It was our daughter's 24th birthday and we were in the city to celebrate it with her and her boyfriend. Again, the evening was completely delightful.

I am a magician, and so were the people I was attending with when we went recently. Steve is a pro's pro. Although we knew most of the secrets behind the illusions, we were very impressed with his delivery and routine. Many many magicians would do well to see his show. They would learn how to capture and hold an audience's attention. See this show. Recommended for both the behind the scenes folks and the regular joe off the street.

I'm always looking for something different, and came upon Chamber Magic. I made reservations for the show and for a stay at the Waldorf before telling my wife. When I told her about it, she agreed to go only because I had already bought the tickets. However, when the show ended, my wife was very happy that she attended the show. She and I left the suite as amazed as we possibly could be. The show was fantastic. It was made especially enjoyable by the intimate audience. I recommend the show wholeheartedly to anyone, and in fact I have already e-mailed several of my friends who I know would enjoy it. I'm also recommending that anyone who wishes to see the show should reserve a room at the Waldorf. The atmosphere of the hotel, the great food at the Bull and Bear, and the intimacy of Sir Harry's, all blended with the ambience of Chamber Magic to complete a great night. If there was anything negative about the experience, it can only be the ignorance of a few people regarding the recommended dress code (probably didn't read it, or didn't care), and the one arrogant person that had arrived late and had to be told twice to turn off his cell phone.

he is the BEST!!!

I've seen other magicians before, and others who've even demonstrated true mind-reading abilities, which has been incredible to experience of course - but this Steve Cohen is the very best - he is the real deal - he really reads minds, and as to his "tricks" - I suppose it's possible they are all slight of hand, or maybe they involve some real magic too - there is no way to know - you are up close within just inches and it looks real to me. He is very personable and likeable and fun to watch too. I will be going back again as soon as possible! This was one of the greatest events I've ever been too.

OFF THE CHARTS!

My experience attending CHAMBER MAGIC was everything and more than I expected. I am an unabashed fan of all forms of magic - close-up, mentalism, stage illusions, etc. I was prepared for an entertaining evening. But I was not prepared for how entertaining and memorable an experience I would witness. First, the ambiance of the setting is so special. You enter not the Waldorf Astoria Hotel but rather the exclusive, classy Waldorf Towers! Walking through the corridor to the magic suite you are enveloped in this special aura. You are greeted into the suite by no less than a "butler-like" individual. You take your seat in a formal parlor room, a very intimate setting of about 40 plus seats, some folding chairs set up in rows, a few easy chairs and sofas. And then STEVE COHEN introduces himself, resplendent in cutaway tails, formally dressed but informal in his manner and cordialness. And the magic begins.... Steve does things with a deck of cards that defies all principles of physics and logic... From cards to mind reading, to book tests, design duplication, and then there's "Think-A-Drink" which I cannot begin to go into. An hour and a half goes fast when your'e having fun! Alas, it did come to an end and i had to go out into the cold, and wet Manhattan streets to do my own magic of hailing a cab! (Mike Bozniak)

The show was great. I suggest people get there early as the best seats are in the front row..I will go back and take the kids.
