Description

Traverse Tall Ship Co. offers the premier day sailing experience in Traverse City! The sailing yacht Scout will whisk you away on a luxurious private 2-hour cruise for up to 6 passengers. Sail the spectacular waters of Grand Traverse Bay.

While aboard, you may participate as much, or as little, as you like. Sit back and relax or jump right in and help pilot this magnificent vessel. Take the wheel, set sails, and crank winches; we’re happy to teach you about sailing! Don’t forget to pack your bathing suits! If the weather is appropriate we have the option of stopping for a swim call!

During our cruise you’ll enjoy complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. In addition you’re welcome to bring your own alcoholic drinks aboard and stock them in our fridge. Feel free to pack a meal for the trip or, for added convenience, we have a list of catering options ranging from gourmet sandwich lunches to multi-course dinners.

What You Can Expect:
  • We will sail lower West Grand Traverse Bay, affording a good view of the Traverse City waterfront, including landmarks such as the historic Park Place Hotel and the Great Lakes Maritime Academy with its 224 ft. training vessel, State of Michigan.
  • You’re welcome to help raise the sails and steer the ship (great photo op!).
  • Our friendly captain and crew love to chat one-on-one and answer your questions in this casual and friendly environment.
  • All cruises on the Scout include complimentary soft drinks, snacks, fruit, and Moomers Ice Cream.
Sit back and relax, or join in the fun of sailing the ship - it's up to you. Either way you choose to spend your cruise one thing is certain: after sailing aboard the beautiful Scout, you won't wait to come back for more!

Join us for an intimate sail aboard Scout!

What Is Not Included?

Gratuity is not included in the price of your sail. However, tips are greatly appreciated by our hard working crew!  If you enjoy your experience and service, a 15-20% gratuity is appropriate.

Meeting Location

M-22, just north of downtown Traverse City (Traverse City, MI) (Exact meeting location details will be provided immediately upon purchase of tickets.)
Do I need to book tickets in advance?
While we can sometimes accommodate last minute sign-ups, we highly recommend purchasing your tickets in advance in order to guarantee your space. Book online or over the phone using a Visa, Mastercard or American Express.
The forecast says 30% chance of rain, will it rain on my sail?
This is a common summer forecast in this area. The majority of time we will see little or no precipitation. We watch the weather radar carefully and will cancel in the event of extended periods of heavy rain. However, we will sail in light rain or showers.
What happens if there is bad weather?
If Traverse Tall Ship Co. cancels because of bad weather (thunderstorms, heavy rain for extended periods etc.) you may reschedule your sail or receive a full refund.
What is your cancellation policy?
Once purchased, tickets cannot be refunded. You may reschedule your tickets (subject to availability) only if you do so at least 24 hours in advance.
What should I bring with me?
We strongly recommend sunscreen and a hat. If you don't feel like just having a light snack, feel free to bring additional snacks and beverages. Also feel free to bring alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages on board, we can help keep things cool in our cooler. Please don't bring any hard-sided coolers on board, we don't have the room to stow them.
What should I wear?
Even at the height of summer it’s usually cooler on the water. We recommend having a jacket or sweater with you. All passengers should wear rubber soft-soled sneakers/tennis shoes or sandals. No high-heels please!
Is there an age limit for these sails?
While there is no age limit for the sails, all attendees under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Are children and infants allowed to attend? Do I need to purchase a ticket for them?
Per USCG regulations all guests must be counted as passengers. Please keep in mind that this includes children and toddlers.
Is your sailboat safe?
Scout meets or exceeds all U. S. Coast Guard and State of Michigan regulations for construction, stability, safety equipment, and electronics for vessels in passenger service. The U. S. Coast Guard licensed captain has many years of experience and you can rest assured of being in good hands.
Will I get seasick?
Because of Scout’s size as a smaller vessel, seasickness is a concern for some passengers. While our sailing grounds in Grand Traverse Bay are well protected from most wind directions which keeps the water relatively calm, please take the necessary precautions before boarding the boat.
Is there a bathroom on the boat?
Yes, the boat is equipped with a bathroom that is accessible at all times. We call them "marine heads" and they are unlike the bathrooms you use at home. Using a marine head involves pumping, and there are simple directions posted in the bathroom on how to use it.
What happens if it starts raining when we're out on our sail?
Don't worry, we won't melt! Trips with a little wetness have proven to be some of the most memorable bonding experiences for our guests. (This all depends on attitude of course...) We have ponchos available for all of our guests in the case we are caught in a rain-shower.
Is the ship handicap accessible?
Unfortunately due to its small size, Scout is not handicap accessible. Please take a look at our sails on Manitou, as the boat is larger and can accommodate manual wheelchairs, which we do have on the premises if you only have a battery powered one.
Are any food or drinks included in the sail?
All cruises on Scout include complimentary soft drinks, snacks, fruit, and Moomer's Ice Cream.
Can I bring my own food and drinks?
You may bring your own food, but space considerations do not allow large hard plastic coolers to be brought aboard Scout. Remember that all cruises on Scout include complimentary soft drinks, snacks, fruit, and Moomers Ice Cream. All alcoholic beverages are BYOB on Scout.
Is there a place to sit? Is seating assigned?
There are several seating options aboard, including our cozy cushioned cockpit.
Is smoking permitted?
No. Smoking in not permitted anywhere on our vessels or property.
Do you have life jackets?
Per U. S. Coast Guard regulations, adult and child life jackets are available. You are not required to wear life jackets, but are welcome to if you like. Younger children may be required to wear a life jacket.
Are pregnant women allowed to attend the sail?
Yes, pregnant women are welcome aboard.
Should I tip the captain and crew?
Tipping is customary, but should be based on your satisfaction with the service you receive. A 15%- 20% gratuity is appropriate if you are happy with the performance of the captain and crew.
Can I stow anything on the boat?
We have space below if you have items you need to stow.
Where do I park?
