  • Breathtaking views of the Traverse City shoreline and shops
  • The great historic Park Place Hotel
  • Unique perspective of the Great Lakes Maritime Academy
  • An informative narration from the Traverse City History Center

Meeting Location

M-22, just north of downtown Traverse City (Traverse City, MI) (Exact meeting location details will be provided immediately upon purchase of tickets.)
Do I need to book tickets in advance?
While we can sometimes accommodate last minute sign-ups, we highly recommend purchasing your tickets in advance in order to guarantee your space. Book online or over the phone using a Visa, Mastercard or American Express.
The forecast says 30% chance of rain, will it rain on my sail?
This is a common summer forecast in this area. The majority of time we will see little or no precipitation. We watch the weather radar carefully and will cancel in the event of extended periods of heavy rain. However, we will sail in light rain or showers.
What happens if there is bad weather?
If Traverse Tall Ship Co. cancels because of bad weather (thunderstorms, heavy rain for extended periods etc.) you may reschedule your sail or receive a full refund.
What is your cancellation policy?
Once purchased, tickets cannot be refunded. You may reschedule your tickets (subject to availability) only if you do so at least 24 hours in advance.
What should I bring with me?
We strongly recommend sunscreen and a hat. Please leave beverages and coolers ashore. We do have a bar aboard with a variety of soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.
What should I wear?
Even at the height of summer it’s usually cooler on the water. We recommend having a jacket or sweater with you. All passengers should wear rubber soft-soled sneakers/tennis shoes or sandals. No high-heels please!
Is there an age limit for these sails?
While there is no age limit for the sails, all attendees under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Are children and infants allowed to attend? Do I need to purchase a ticket for them?
Per USCG regulations all guests must be counted as passengers and have a ticket to sail. Keep in mind, we have a reduced rate available for children ages 3-12 and children ages 2 and under may attend for free but be sure to also book a free infant ticket for them.
Is your sailboat safe?
Manitou meets or exceeds all U. S. Coast Guard regulations for construction, stability, safety equipment, and electronics for vessels in passenger service. The U. S. Coast Guard licensed captain has many years of experience and you can rest assured of being in good hands.
Will I get seasick?
You are unlikely to get seasick. Manitou’s size and construction generally translate into an easy motion. In addition, our sailing grounds in Grand Traverse Bay are well protected from most wind directions.
Is there a bathroom on the boat?
Yes, the boat is equipped with two bathrooms that are accessible at all times. We call them "marine heads" and they are unlike the bathrooms you use at home. Using a marine head involves pumping, and there are simple directions posted in the bathroom on how to use it.
What happens if it starts raining when we're out on our sail?
Don't worry, we won't melt! Trips with a little wetness have proven to be some of the most memorable bonding experiences for our guests. (This all depends on attitude of course...) We have ponchos available for all of our guests in the case we are caught in a rain-shower.
Is the ship handicap accessible?
Manitou is handicap accessible, although we cannot accommodate battery powered wheelchairs due to the excessive weight. We do have a manual wheelchair on the premises. There are two steps at either end of our boarding ramp. The crew is quite adept at lifting you over these two minor obstacles.
Are any food or drinks included in the sail?
While this cruise does not include food and beverages, we do have snacks and beverages available for purchase on board. You are also welcome to pack a simple picnic lunch, although, due to space considerations, we cannot allow coolers aboard.
Can I bring my own food and drinks?
You may bring your own food, but space considerations do not allow coolers to be brought aboard Manitou. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks may be purchased by cash or credit card. Please refrain from bringing beverages with you. It is illegal to bring alcoholic beverages aboard Manitou.
What sort of drinks do you have available on board?
We have beer and wine available for purchase on board. Our bar features local craft beer for approximately $4, or Bud Light for $3. We also have 375 ml bottles of wine available for approximately $10, or 375 ml bottles of champagne for $14. There are also soft drinks, lemonade and bottled water available for $1.
Do you accept both cash and credit cards on board?
Yes, we accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover or cash on board.
Is there a place to sit? Is seating assigned?
Seating is on the cabin house tops and on deck boxes. This is backless bench seating. Seating is not assigned, and you are free to move about the vessel, including touring below decks, during the sail.
Is smoking permitted?
No. Smoking in not permitted anywhere on our vessels or property.
Do you have life jackets?
Per U. S. Coast Guard regulations, adult and child life jackets are available. You are not required to wear life jackets, but are welcome to if you like. If you would like your child to wear a life jacket, and you have a recreational vest style jacket, we recommend you bring it. The USCG required jackets that we keep aboard offer excellent flotation, but are somewhat bulky.
Are pregnant women allowed to attend the sail?
Yes, pregnant women are welcome aboard.
Should I tip the captain and crew?
Tipping is customary, but should be based on your satisfaction with the service you receive. A 15% gratuity is appropriate if you are happy with the performance of the captain and crew.

We have space below if you have items you need to stow. However, Traverse Tall Ship Co. cannot be responsible for any valuables stowed out of your sight.
