My husband and I totally enjoyed the sail! It was a wine tasting cruise, and the wine was very good with generous tasting pours. The food was amazing! It was a light dinner loaded with flavor, color, texture and variety. We hope to do this again next year.

Wine cruise and more...

We loved the ship, the crew was pleasant and informative about the ship. Two things would add to the enjoyment of the cruise for us. It was difficult to understand what was being said about the wine. And I really wanted to buy some Left Foot Charlie wine to take home. We left before 10 the next morning so we could not purchase the wine. I asked at Tom's--no luck I also would have enjoyed a description of the area in which we were sailing. Maybe by the captain??

Disabled Friendly Cruise

My totally blind friend, Cathy and her service dog, Lucy and I had a pleasant experience on a wine tasting cruise. The crew was helpful, but overly so as some might be when dealing with customers with disabilities. I am legally blind with some usable vision. The crew described things to us, the wine guy was pleasant and informative as was the man handling the buffet items. It was a windy day so the boat heeled a bit but not to the point we were ever concerned for our safety. A pleasant experience all around. The only thing that might have made it easier for us was if there were an optional shuttle service from hotels to the dock and back since taxi service in the evening in Traverse City can be a challenge. All in all, very enjoyable - we'd do it again!

Perfect Summer Evening Cruise

We chose to sail this ship as a celebration of our anniversary. It was a very pleasant experience. I enjoyed the wine tasting. He enjoyed the beer on tap. We both enjoyed the Mediterranean fare served as well. The staff and crew were friendly and entertaining. It felt crowded though with 59 people on board. It was a perfect summer evening and the wind carried us effortlessly back and forth across the bay. The highlight for me was to steer and turn the ship! All in all in was a wonderful experience. We would do it again!

The only drawback was seating...there wasn't enough places to sit maybe because it was popular?

Delightful Evening!

My husband and I enjoy Michigan wines so this was a great way to learn more about Left Foot Charley's. The representative from the wine maker was very informative, knowledgeable without being stuffy, sincerely conveying his enthusiasm for local wine, and not just the delicious ones from Left Foot Charley that were served. The food, catered by Silver Swan, was excellent. (Great value for the money with this outing.) The crew were friendly and professional, and our fellow passengers, almost all couples of varying ages, were fun to talk to. It helped that the weather was lovely, but this experience would have been fun even in a drizzle. I highly recommend this cruise and when my husband and I are next in Michigan we plan to try one of the microbrew ones too.

Do I need to book tickets in advance?
While we can sometimes accommodate last minute sign-ups, we highly recommend purchasing your tickets in advance in order to guarantee your space. Book online or over the phone using a Visa, Mastercard or American Express.
The forecast says 30% chance of rain, will it rain on my sail?
This is a common summer forecast in this area. The majority of time we will see little or no precipitation. We watch the weather radar carefully and will cancel in the event of extended periods of heavy rain. However, we will sail in light rain or showers.
What happens if there is bad weather?
If Traverse Tall Ship Co. cancels because of bad weather (thunderstorms, heavy rain for extended periods etc.) you may reschedule your sail or receive a full refund.
What is your cancellation policy?
Once purchased, tickets cannot be refunded. You may reschedule your tickets (subject to availability) only if you do so at least 24 hours in advance.
What should I bring with me?
Since this cruise is in the evening, we would recommend dressing appropriately for the colder temperatures. Be sure to bring your government issued ID. All participants are required to have ID since this is a 21+ event. Please leave beverages and coolers ashore.
What should I wear?
Even at the height of summer it’s usually cooler on the water. We recommend having a jacket or sweater with you. All passengers should wear rubber soft-soled sneakers/tennis shoes or sandals. No high-heels please!
Is there an age limit for this sail?
There is not an age limit for the sail, however, in order to participate in the wine tasting, you must be at least 21 years of age with a government issued ID. Keep in mind, however, there is no reduced rate for children and everyone will need a full price ticket.
Is your sailboat safe?
Manitou meets or exceeds all U. S. Coast Guard regulations for construction, stability, safety equipment, and electronics for vessels in passenger service. The U. S. Coast Guard licensed captain has many years of experience and you can rest assured of being in good hands.
Will I get seasick?
You are unlikely to get seasick. Manitou’s size and construction generally translate into an easy motion. In addition, our sailing grounds in Grand Traverse Bay are well protected from most wind directions.
Is there a bathroom on the boat?
Yes, the boat is equipped with two bathrooms that are accessible at all times. We call them "marine heads" and they are unlike the bathrooms you use at home. Using a marine head involves pumping, and there are simple directions posted in the bathroom on how to use it.
Is the ship handicap accessible?
Manitou is handicap accessible, although we cannot accommodate battery powered wheelchairs due to the excessive weight. We do have a manual wheelchair on the premises. There are two steps at either end of our boarding ramp. The crew is quite adept at lifting you over these two minor obstacles.
Are any food or drinks included in the sail?
Yes, the Summer Wine Tasting Cruise includes delicious Mediterranean cuisine provided by Silver Swan Homemade Foods. The flavors will surely complement the wines we will be tasting. Additional alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and snacks can be purchased on board.
What type of food will be served?
Silver Swan Homemade Foods will specially cater Mediterranean cuisine that best suits the flavors of the wine of the day. The menu varies, but includes delicious items such as: baked brie with raspberry melba, stuffed grape leaves, baba ganoush, and lemon bars.
What if I have dietary restrictions?
Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions in advance and we'll do our best to accommodate you.
Can I bring my own food and drinks?
You may bring your own food, but space considerations do not allow coolers to be brought aboard Manitou. However, be aware that a ticket for this cruise does include food and wine tasting. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks may be purchased by cash or credit card. Please refrain from bringing beverages with you. It is illegal to bring alcoholic beverages aboard Manitou.
What sort of wine will be available on board?
On Tuesday evenings we will be sampling wines from Leelanau Cellars. Leelanau Cellars offers a variety of wines from the season Summer Sunset semi-dry blush wine to their Great Lakes Red. On Thursday evenings we will be tasting wines from Left Foot Charley urban winery. While the selection will be varied, Left Foot Charley specializes in white wine varietals, hard cider, and sparkling wine.
How many glasses of wine are included in the ticket price?
We will sample four to five wines in standard tasting pours.
Do you accept both cash and credit cards on board?
Yes, we accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover or cash on board.
Is there a place to sit? Is seating assigned?
Seating is on the cabin house tops and on deck boxes. This is backless bench seating. Seating is not assigned, and you are free to move about the vessel, including touring below decks, during the sail.
Is smoking permitted?
No. Smoking in not permitted anywhere on our vessels or property.
Do you have life jackets?
Per U. S. Coast Guard regulations, adult and child life jackets are available. You are not required to wear life jackets, but are welcome to if you like. If you would like your child to wear a life jacket, and you have a recreational vest style jacket, we recommend you bring it. The USCG required jackets that we keep aboard offer excellent flotation, but are somewhat bulky.
Are pregnant women allowed to attend the sail?
Yes, pregnant women are welcome aboard.
Should I tip the captain and crew?

Traverse Tall Ship Company

With Traverse Tall Ship Co. you will make memories to last a lifetime aboard the 114’ schooner Manitou or the classic sailing yacht Scout, as we ply the spectacular waters of Grand Traverse Bay! The company was founded in 1987 with the mission of providing the highest quality customer service, and an affordable way for the average person to experience the thrill of sailing.

Current owners, Capt. Dave and Mary McGinnis, first became involved with the company when Dave was hired to command the newly acquired schooner Manitou back in 1990. They assumed the mantle in 2004 and haven't looked back.  Manitou's 2 hour sails (many of them themed), bed & breakfast packages, and multi-day windjammer cruises offer a wide variety of popular choices.

After several years, Dave and Mary felt it was time to offer a more intimate and customized sailing option for those folks who might not want to be in a large group setting. So in June 2013 Sailing Yacht Scout joined the Tall Ship family, to great accolades from all who sailed aboard her! The 38 ft. Scout is ideal for a private group of six or fewer guests.  Because you are reserving the entire boat we can work with you to design the ideal experience!

Traverse Tall Ship Co. is proud to have received a "Certificate of Excellence" from TripAdvisor.  Our vessels meet the rigorous standards of the US Coast Guard and State of Michigan and our licensed captains and crew act with the highest degree of professionalism.

“Awesome, so much fun. Great crew!!!! Enjoyed the sail immensely!” – Sammie O.

We look forward to sailing with you!
