Activity Description
Lost love. Power marriages. Duels. Even a ghost story. This fully narrated Segway tour in downtown Raleigh offers an intriguing narrative about the personalities of Raleigh's past, including the sometimes tragic stories of the romantic unions that impacted the history of the city, and even the state of North Carolina!

The tour spends most of its time in Oakwood Cemetery, where beautifully landscaped grounds offer park-like scenery, meandering roadways perfect for gliding, hundreds of unique monuments, and of course plenty of history! You'll glide on Segways as your knowledgeable guide takes you on a memorable journey filled with great stories of Raleigh's past.

Highlights include:

  • Oakwood Historic District: The 19th-century neighborhood was Raleigh's first true "suburb" and is filled with lovely period homes.
  • Oakwood Cemetery: Founded in 1869, the history-filled garden cemetery is the final resting place of many of Raleigh's prominent families and nearly 1,500 Confederate soldiers.
  • Famous Names: If you live in Raleigh, you're familiar with the names Haywood, Pullen, Heck and Mordecai. But did you know that Gone With the Wind author Margaret Mitchell had ties here, as did the celebrated author, Thomas Wolfe? You'll hear their engaging stories, and many more!
