Activity Description
Come join us to learn about our nation's Civil War era history on this combination walking and mini-bus tour through the Washington area.
On your 3 hour guided tour, you'll hear stories about:
- Matthew Brady's attempts to photograph the battlefield
- Clara Barton's tireless efforts on behalf of missing persons
- John Wilkes Booth's assassination of President Lincoln
We'll start off following the historic roads that took soldiers to and from Washington’s Fort Stevens, where President Lincoln stood on the ramparts and Union forces repelled the advancing enemy.
Next we'll take a docent-led tour of Lincoln Cottage, the 16th president's retreat on the bucolic campus of the Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home. A National Trust for Historic Preservation site, Lincoln Cottage has undergone a complete restoration so you can see it now as it existed back then.
Finally, we'll pay a visit to the African American Civil War Memorial, the only memorial to celebrate the war's United States Colored Troops.
Don't miss this unique opportunity to learn about the soldiers and citizens of the US Civil War as their stories are told by an experienced Washington Walks guide!
