Trip Highlight!

On the way back home, I asked my date his favorite part of our vacation. The first thing he mentioned was Shirley Wong's tour! Not only was the food the VERY best Chinese I have ever had at one sitting (after eating chicken feet, wings will never be the same!), but the culture and history of these resilient Asian-Americans was especially informative in a personal way. Please don't miss it!!!!

Lola was informative, friendly and kept things on time. The dim sum at the end of the tour was very good and more food than I expected.

This was a great introduction to the history of Chinatown. Our guide grew up in the area so was VERY knowledgable about his heritage and how Chinatown came to be. He also was full of information about which restaurants to avoid and which ones were worth visiting. The tea shop was excellent and we learned a lot about how to choose tea and the proper way to store and prepare it. The meal at the end was also a great way to try several different dishes and our guide explained the difference between food preparation in the various regions of China. I would recommend this tour to anyone wanting an 'inside peek' into Chinatown.

Chinatown Culture w/o Tacky Commercialism

Having done your Greenwich Village tour, we had high expectations and were not disappointed. This was an excellent overview of the history and culture of Chinatown presented by a lady who was born and raised there. She mercifully avoided the overkill of Grant St. and showed us historically significant places we otherwise would have missed, including a Buddhist temple. While the tea shop proprietor was long-winded during our tasting, running us about 20 min. behind schedule, we also discovered a very reasonable, quality art/framing shop, and learned about Chinese herbs and produce. The lunch at Four Seas was wonderfully different without being overly exotic. We found the discussion of personal politics unexpected and irrelevant to the tour, considering that we had already been delayed at the tea shop. All in all, however, this is a highly recommended tour which we would take again! We would also be interested in a Chinatown tour about feng shui and healing arts (acupuncture, herbs etc.).

Cindy and I were in town on a short vacation and took the tour. We were very pleased. the tour guide we had was named Frank. he was very knowledgeable and friendly. since he had grown up in China Town he had a lot of personal history to add to the China Town history that he imparted to us. it was neat to have more than one person on the street greet our tour guide as a friend while he was guiding us through China Town. we learned many things and stopped by some great shops on our tour. the lunch at the end was awesome. the dim sum was as good as any i have ever had; and Frank knew a bit about each dish and shared how they were prepared. so Cindy and I would definitely recommend the tour to anyone: and the next time we are in San Francisco, we will most likely take the tour again.

Could not have been happier with the tour. The tour lasted a full three hours and was chock full of interesting history and personal tidbits. Our tour leader was fantastic! If this wasn't enough, it culminated in a wonderful lunch with great company. What a bargain. A must do in SF.

Chinatown Revealed

My husband and I enjoyed the 2.5 hour walk with our tour guide, Dorothy. My favorite stop was at the Red Blossom Tea Shop where we learned about the varieities of green tea and tasted one of the best varieties of oolong. We briefly walked through a traditional pharmacist (would have liked more information here) and a fresh produce shop. Our guide explained much about the history of the area and pointed out a variety of historical buildings. The dim sum lunch that we got at the end was a feast...much more food than I expected: 5 different dim sum dishes, plus soup, a main dish, and dessert. Quite filling, so come on the walk ready to have a big meal at noon! Would recommend this walking tour. Very educational---and delicious too!

A Cultural Delight!

Even though it was a rainy day, Dorothy made this tour the highlight of our trip to SF. She wove together stories from her own life with the history of Chinatown to give us a rich, culturally-steeped experience. The tea tasting and dim sum lunch were fantastic!!

Dorothy was very sweet and knowlegeable, but after seeing Shirley on TV several times, we expected to have her as our tour guide. I didn't get from the registration that there might be others doing this job

Pretty good for the money

The tour was very informative. The guide took you to various locations in Chinatown and explained culture and history. Far and away the best part of the tour was the dim sum tastings. There were probably about 10 samplings, and you left feeling very full. It was all you can eat, so you really had to decide how much you wanted to eat of each dish. The only negative (and this is by no means the fault of the guide) was that on a Saturday morning in Chinatown, people were everywhere, and it was tough to keep the group together and not bump into strangers on the street. Other than that, it was well done.
