Very informative, a little rushed

Very much enjoyed the tour, and the staff was great. We were supposed to go on a Saturday right after arriving in San Fran, but flight delays made us miss it, but Shirley Fong-Torres called us personally and allowed us to come on the following Monday, even though it was supposedly non-refundable. The tour itself was extremely informative, learned a tremendous amount about the history of Chinatown and some of the important people in its development. There isn't really any time to shop during the tour so plan on that for afterward, and lunch got started a little late so we had to literally eat and run. That said, I highly recommend this tour to anybody interested in San Fran's Chinatown, and Shirley and her staff were great to us. They did a lot ot accomodate my vegetarian wife, but if you have any dietary issues let them know in advance, the restaurant isn't as understanding as Shirley was...

Dorothy was our tour guide. Being born in Chinatown, she made it very personal and informative while sharing some very interesting stories.

Our tour guide, Dorothy, was knowledgeable and interesting to listen to. I learned many fascinating tidbits about Chinatown, its history and the Chinese culture. The tour was just the right length (about two hours) and ended with a delicious dim sum lunch.

I saw things and learned things I probably would not have accomplished on my own. I took away more than if I had wandered around Chinatown on my own.

We greatly enjoyed our two-hour walk, which provided in-depth information on Chinatown history and culture. The culinary portion was less than we expected, but came in the form of an excellent eight-course dim sum lunch at the end.

Alberta was a great tour guide! She told us many personal stories and not only gave us a tour of Chinatown, but also gave us the background on customs and beliefs. Very interesting, educational and entertaining! She also gave us some great tips on where to shop after the tour. I/we were so pleased!!!!

Our favorite tour during our SF stay

Loved the guide. She shared stories of growing up in the area as a 2nd generation Chinese. Tour subject matter was very interesting and the guide was easily able to communicate information to us despite the crowds. (Her voice carried and she faced us when she talked unlike many guides we have had.) The lunch had quite a variety and our kids ate things we didn't think they would touch.

We very much enjoyed Hank's tour. He shared a lot of little stories from his childhood growing up in Chinatown and showed us some neat things we would have never come across on our own (specialty tea shop, fortune cookie factory, buddhist temple, and much more). We would take other out of towners on the tour without hesitation. If there is a suggestion for improvement it would be to hear a little more historical facts and statistics about how Chinatown came to be, etc. The tour concluded with a very delicious Chinese multi course meal in a good restaurant in the heart of China town.

Great experience for the children

I have 4 children ages 15,13, 11 and 7. I wanted them to really understand Chinatown and not just see it as another tourist attraction. Bernice helped to explain the issues in Chinatown, past, present and future. I think it was a great learning experience for the kids and I learned too. I do think the restaurant could do more to cater to the kids with offers of rice and perhaps a soup or something that wouldn't be so unusual for kids who haven't experienced Chinese cuisine before. Overall, I recommend this for anyone who wants to learn more about Chinatown and is willing to walk alot and be open minded to new experiences. It helps if you ask questions too! Make sure to ask for really explicit directions to their office/meeting place. I found it a little hard to find as I was unfamiliar with the area.

Chuck was delightful and informative. Liked the tea visit and the fortune cookie visit. Could have done with a lot less info on the Chinese vegetables. Restaurant was yummy, would have liked more Dim Sum (shoe -pow, and shoe mao, sp?? and less Chinese (beef broccoli?) I also think a soft drink should have been included in the price.
