Tour guide was fine Meal was bad

Having eaten in many dim sum establishments, I was suprised at the lack of quality as well as the indifferent serviice. I believe the guide was embarassed by the meal and the treatment. A tour sponsored by a chef should do better.

A Wonderful Way to see Chinatown
Wed, Oct 14  10:00 AM MJConroy Male 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Family Without Children
Our tour guide, Dorothy, was wonderful.A native of Chinatown, she showed us the building she was born in. She took us into several businesses that were run by the 3rd generation of a family where she knew all 3 generations. We got a fascinating history lesson of the neighborhood and learned all kinds of things we never would have learned on our own, like the pagoda-style building that is know a bank that used to be the telephone exchange and the unique way calls were received up until 1950. We had a wonderful tea tasting and lesson in tea making. We got to see the alleys and learn their histories. We visited several interesting stores that had good buys and not just tourist-item places. Our lunch was much better than I had expected it would be and Dorothy did a great job of explaining everything and in providing chopstick instruction. This was one of the highlights of our trip to San Francisco.

The tour was fun and exceeded expectation. Our tour director, Dorothy, was, at age 75 with eighteen years experience, fun and knowledgeable. Zerve requiring me as a traveling tourist to sign up on your site and especially print out an e-ticket will keep me from using you in the future. You could advise the vendor of my name etc rather than me take a voucher. Your rep got what I felt was way more information than was needed to book a simple tour, at least have the tour director use it to identify me to keep me from having to sign up on a site (Zerve), that I have no interest in and then have to find a printer to boot while traveling.

A Tour Not to Be Missed.

We were luck y enough to have our tour of Chinatown with Shirley Fong-Torres. In addition to an excellant historical tour of Chinatown, we received insight into living working and growing up in the Chinese community of San Francisco. Loved Shirley's presentation and her new guide in training who came with us.

Informative, delicious, food poisoning?

Our guide was very informative and friendly. Sometimes he made us stand in the hot sun a very long time while he was talking, even though shade was close by. (I got a sunburn on my face.) Some of his little talks could have been split into two different stops to keep us from zoning out when it went on long. But all in all, he was a good guide. He gave a lot of historical background. I was worried about the hilly streets, but our guide chose a path that was no problem to walk, also he stopped us frequently enough to rest our flatlander legs! I especially liked seeing the fortune cookies being made and the visit to the tea shop. the lady at the tea shop was fantastic! I would have liked to go inside more of the unique shops to see and hear about them also. I also would have liked a handout on where we went (map) and points of interest to use when the tour was over. The food at the restaurant was also wonderful tasting, and lots of it was new to me, so I enjoyed learning about it also. Our guide explained all the dishes to us as they were served. Unfortunately, for some reason, I was sick with an intestinal upset all day long the following day, which made me wonder if something about the restaurant food was off. For this reason, I probably would not recommend the lunch included tour to anyone. It could have been for some other reason, but it was the only time in 14 days in SF that I had this problem, and it is not a problem that I have very often whether traveling or at home. So I suspect the food at the Chinese restaurant..

not a culinary tour

I was really looking for a culinary tour. You would think that with a name like "wok wiz" I would have found it. I was not the only one who had that expectation.More of a history lesson. Still worth the money. Great guide, great lunch !

Good way to understand Chinatown

We, a couple in our 60s, really enjoyed this tour. We like Chinese food and it seemed like a wonderful way to approach San Francisco's Chinatown. Frank, our guide, was full of information about Chinatown in general, the way of life that supports so many groceries and food markets, and the food itself. We especially enjoyed the tea shop. The tasting there was excellent. But, too, we like the back alley stops -- the barber with his stringed instrument for example. The tour is worth lunch alone. It was great to have someone narrate the dishes, their ingredients and suggest condiments. In Washington, DC, where we are from, Chinatown is gone, so for us it was interesting to see that this is still a going way of life in San Francisco and likely to remain so. Frank also gave us some good advice on what to do next in San Francisco and how to get there.

China Town tour was great!

I loved the Wok WIz china Town tour! Dorothy was awesome! She gave a very good perspective on China Town history and Chinese culture. She made the tour feel very personal. She made sure to learn each of our names and to talk to each of us individually during the tour. What a wonderful ambassador for San Francisco!
