My daughter and I -both foodies- just came back from San Francisco and doing Shirley Fong's I Ate my Way Thru Chinatown was a highlight of our trip. We sampled some of the best Chinese food I have eaten plus we had so much fun. Book well in advance as this tour fills up quickly. MJ from Pembroke, Ontario ,Canada

Wonderful personal feel to this tour

The dim sum tour was great fun and great value for money. Being shown around by Frank lent a wonderful personal touch after some of the other tours we had taken on our holiday. It was informative and also entertaining. The dim sum was fanatastic and a fitting end to the tour. We can absolutely recommend this. My daughter is 16 and also enjoyed it but perhaps younger children might not be so engaged.

Our guide was a lovely lady who knew in depth the history of chinatown. It was delivered with enthusiasm and passion and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the well planned tour. I would easily recommend the tour to others and it represented excellent value for money. Once again thank you.

Pleasant tour with interesting historical details

Our guide was on time and very pleasant. The tour was an easy walk through Chinatown and took us through some side streets we might not have seen otherwise. One big downside to the tour for us was the four or five stops we made in retail shops where there was a tiresome sales pitch on behalf of the store. It was pretty obvious that the rest of our group felt this was a bit much after the first one or two and that shilling for these stores definitely took away from the tour. I'd recommend this tour to others but provide fair warning about the embedded sales pitches. If the historical elements are of no interest to someone I believe you'd have just as good a time (and on your own schedule) if you walked Chinatown alone.

We enjoyed the walk through Chinatown with a cheerful and well informed guide. As well as learning the history of the area we saw it through the eyes of a local.

Wonderful snapshot of an era

We had Dorothy as our guide. She was very thorough and had many many stories about the neighbourhood. We quite enjoyed the whole experience; the tea shop was a definite highlight. Dorothy then worked tirelessly throughout our dim sum, bouncing between our two tables explaining the different dishes. Delicious!

Good tour, good food

Our guide was knowledgable, well-informed and enthusiastic. Unfortunately, the tour moved at a snail's pace and I did get a bit impatient. The food was good, not great, and there was a mix-up which resulted in the appetizer, spring rolls, being served after everything else. Ultimately, there was more food than we could eat, so no-one had any complaints. Overall it was a worthwhile experience and I know much more about Chinatown--"Yerba Buena"--than I did at the beginning of the walk.

A great way to learn about Chinatown from a local
Fri, Feb 19, 10   10:00 AM J_Craig Male 60-69 International Tourist(s) Family Without Children
This is a great tour to learn the overall history of Chinatown as well as interesting annecdotes that are not in the guidebooks. The tour guide grew up in the area and was knowledgable, freindly and enthusiastic. The tour stops at several interesting stores, such as a tea shop where tea-making was demonstrated, and the guide had tips for other stores to visit that were not just catering to tourists. Many of these stores are carrying on traditional Chinese crafts and customs for the local community as opposed to generic tourist fare. The tour culminates in a good dim sum meal with more food than you can eat. At three hours the tour is a little long, so be prepared to walk a ways and work up a good appetite before you sit down to eat!

A great tour for the price

We did the morning tour including a delicious Dim Sum lunch. Our guide Dorothy was delightful and informative throughout. With only two full days in San Francisco, this was an ideal way to get a more in depth look at an important and interesting part of the city. At $45 each, including lunch, this was money well spent.

From the moment we were greeted by Shirley and Frank we knew we were in for a great time Even though Shirley was taking her other tour she took the time to talk to every member of our group and learn about us Frank was extremely knowledgeable (he grew up in Chinatown) and showed us places you would not find on your own. He went through the history and why Chinatown is as it is The lunch was appetising with a wide variety of dishes We highly recommend this tour Geoff and Glenda
