| The guide was outstanding - Lola was always smiling and happy to answer any questions we had for her. The tour was very informative and I learned a lot, which is always something I hope to have accomplished when I leave a new travel location. The tea shop and the restaurant were wonderful. I could not give the guide or this tour higher marks and, as I said above, I would take the tour again, and if I do go back, I will be looking at Wok Wiz's other available tours and definitely work at least one in. It was that kind of worth it and enjoyable. Sincerely, Kristen A. Hostmeyer | ||||||

| If you don't have a lot of time in the city, this is a great way to see the Chinatown neighborhood and get the insider perspective. Our guide was very knowledgeable and showed us places that a tourist on their own would not know about or think to go see. Although the lunch was not quite a full "Dim Sum" meal, it was a good sampling of various dishes. My husband is a picky eater, and he liked everything. The tea sampling was informative and fun, too. | ||||||

| The Wok Wiz tour that I participated in was very educational. Our tour guide Dorothy was brilliant and one of the most gentle and beautiful people I have ever met. She gave us plenty of information on the background and history of the area. We toured a few specific businesses, but mostly stayed in the allies off the main streets. We did not go in the cookie factory, but we were shown where it was... I think I expected more, but it was still worth the money. The lunch was OK, nothing that I have not had previuosly... After the tour however, my friend and I felt VERY comfortable touring the areas mentioned in the tour and visiting the bakery that Dorothy recommended... AWESOME shrimp chips!!! The tour really helps you become familiar with the area and teaches you some courtesy information... We landed up spending two days walking around by ourselves because of Dorothy's infomation... The jade is incredibly priced!! Tons of deals! | ||||||

| My new husband and I really enjoyed the Wok Wiz tour and Frank, our 2nd generation Chinese guide. Lots of insight into Chinese culture and how they adapted resourcefully to opportunities and opposition in San Francisco. Wonderful lunch at the 4 Seas Restaurant too. | ||||||

Chinatown has seen better days

| This area of San Francisco is looking dirty, old and tired. It no longer seems vibrant or interesting. I've been on this tour previously, so the difference was noticeable. The experience is influenced by the guide too; our leader was pleasant, but focused too much on property values and money; the history component of the overview was sadly lacking. | ||||||

| Our guide, Frank, was full of local lore. He certainly had more information to impart than he had time for. We really appreciated that he grew up in the area and could expound on some of the subtleties of life in Chinatown. He recommended other places for us to visit such as the Chinese Heritage (or was it History) Museum and another temple four stories up both of which we visited after our tour. By the time the day was over, we still had not visited all the places he suggested. There is just too much to see in one day's trip. We plan to return to visit more of the shops, to take photos, and explore more of the streets and alleys. The dim sum lunch was tasty except for the chow fun noodles which lacked flavor and were very greasy. Go light on those. | ||||||

| Our tour guide was fantastic. He kept us moving, gave us great personal information as well as general knowledge, and kept us entertained. I lived in San Francisco for ten years and never saw the area as he showed it to us. We especially liked our stop at the tea shop. The young woman who owns it gave us a great talk, demonstrated how to brew tea well, and gave us wonderful tea to taste. She was articulate and knowledgeable. That said, the food at the end of the trip was an utter disappointment. It was tasteless and poorly prepared. The ingredients were not fresh and the execution was poor. With all the wonderful food the area has to offer this was a disgrace. Myself I would prefer less food of a higher quality and food that more represents the true cuisine. | ||||||

| We had a very informative guide on a clear and beautiful spring day in San Francisco. There are many opportunities to take fantastic pictures. The tea tasting was fun as was a visit to the fortune cookie factory. The Farmer's market was quite the hub of activity that you do not typically see in other metro cities. Thank you for a great day! | ||||||

| What a wonderful experience. We've lived in the Bay Area for 30+ years and this is the first time we decided to take a China Town tour. We were a small group of about seven with Shirley as our guide. We ate in local establishments, watched the chef cook food, learned and tasted "real" tea from China, laughed, talked, shared and ate. This is one tour I would recommend. Shirley gave us short historical lectures standing next to the places she was lecturing about. Although my wife and I have been married for some time it was a great date experience also. Dr Horn | ||||||

| The Wok Wiz Daily tour was a great opportunity to learn some history, experience events and traditions unique to Chinatown and see parts of the community one would not ordinarily find on a self-guided walk-through. What was especially great was the tour guide! She is a mature, native Chinese woman who was raised in the public housing of Chinatown who made the tour so personal by sharing many of her experiences growing up there, from her father's Keno parlor (when it was legal) to her wedding day. She also was very conscious of walking up the hills, taking time to stop half-way up and speaking about points of interest along the way. I'm not in the best "shape," but found the walking, up & down, paced well and easily "do-able." We appreciated that the group size is limited in number (we were 14), so that everyone could hear, see and enjoy the tour. Time and dollars well spent - we did the tour that included lunch, which was also a great experience. I also bought Shirley's book; I was very fortunate she was leading another tour that morning and took time to talk with me and autograph the book before we went our separate ways. | ||||||

| The kids couldn't maintain their focus for very long. There was alot more talking and standing than walking. We saw a few cool things, but we may have found them on our own or through a shorter, less expensive tour. I thought we might "taste" as we went along, but it was really just lunch at the end. We were starved by then! | ||||||

| The tour and tour guide were very interesting. We liked the historical information that was provided. The tea stop was informative and helpful. Lunch was enjoyable for my husband and I. Since we do not eat much Chinese food, my children didn't eat much. However, it was neat trying the different foods. The tour was long for my children, ages 14 and 15. Overall, we enjoyed the tour and glad that we did it. | ||||||

| It would be unfair to say I didn't enjoy the tour but perhaps I saw opportunities missed which would have added to the experience. The tea tasting and brewing was very interesting and a must for visitors, although I would have liked a bit more time there. The visits to the market area was interesting up to a point but marching round a busy 'shop' , in one way and out the other almost felt intrusive as did the visit to the temple. When I commented about opportunuties I meant more could have been made of the areas for which the Chinese are famous e.g. herbal cures and potions. We passed several shops which were mentioned in passing but a similar visit to the tea tasting i.e. practical demonstration or opportunity to buy/ask questions, would have been great. I also saw a few martial arts centres and a person doing Tai Chi, again inclusion would have been a nice addition. However, the Dim Sun tasting at the end was more than welcome and the variety excellent, it also gave our group a chance to exchange stories and views on the food. Overall there were plusses and minuses which probably balanced out at the end of the day. | ||||||
