Wok Wiz, What Fun
Thu, Apr 9  10:00 AM russellbella Male 60-69 Domestic Tourist(s) Family Without Children
Our guide, Chuck, was very knowledgable about Chinatown since he grew up in a tenement there. He shared many tidbits about life and the neighborhoods and Chinatown's culture. The MaTzu temple side trip was very nice and informative. We enjoyed the tea tasting, but especially enjoyed the dim sum lunch at the end. For learning about San Francisco's Chinatown, this is it!

Cool tour

The tour was cool-my parents had gone before and my mother took me on this particular trip. The meal was good, but the tour guide talked about his own personal stuff (that didn't have anything to do with Chinatown or being Chinese) and that got boring after a while.

Full of history and color, personal stories from the leader's childhood growing up in Chinatown. Revealed Chinatown in a whole new way!

Our tour leader grew up in Chinatown so it was fabulous to get all of the inside stories about life there and how things have changed.

Disappointed
Fri, Mar 27  10:00 AM AnnGYoung Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Family Without Children
I was disappointed in the Wok Wiz tour, especially because I had looked forward to it for some time. Several years ago, we had planned a family vacation to San Francisco and I read about the Wok Wiz in several guidebooks. We were unable to take that vacation at the time, but in the interim, I gave the Wok Wiz information to friends who said it was "the highlight of the trip." Therefore, my expectations were very high. While our guide was very nice and informative about Chinatown, I found the tour to be boring for the most part. Because Shirley Fong Torres is a chef and food writer, I had expected many more trips to bakeries, herb shops, food stores, etc. The tour seemed like a Chamber of Commerce tour that attempted to get us to spend money on local merchants (and on things we were not interested in). When we finally got to the tea shop, THAT was more what I had expected of the tour. The shop owner, Alice, was lovely and informative, and it was fun sampling and learning about the different teas. I will say that the restaurant chosen for our lunch, The 4 Seas, was outstanding and we did enjoy the lunch very much. All in all, except for the tea shop and lunch, the tour took up an entire morning and was too expensive for what we received. I probably would not recommend to a friend, or would recommend with certain reservations.

Gracious Hospitality in Chinatown

My daughter (11) and I enjoyed our Wok Whiz Daily tour (with a yummy lunch). It was wonderful to have a historical perspective on Chinatown and the originsof San Francisco. I had visited before but just wandered shops. I loved visiting places I might have been too shy to enter (the Buddhist Temple). Dorothy pointed us to some nice shops, offered a varied experience with rich background stories. She was a gracious hostess. This is a far preferable experience to the hit or miss approach I took before. Many thanks!

Educational and full of information I didn't know

The Guide was quite knowledgable and moved at a pleastant pace. We learned about aspects of Chinatown that we really didn't know. The information was for all account accurate and truthful. My major in college was Asian Studies. The lunch was the best Chinese food since we visted China in 1995. Hopefully, you will keep Dorthy on as a guide. The tea shop was only one of the highlights of the tour.

It was great fun...tour guide was knowledgeable/native of Chinatown and obviously proud of his "home town". Lunch was terrific...you'd enjoy the trip.

Excellent Tour

Loved Frank, our guide. Made narrative fun as well as informational. He answered all questions, both adult and the kids. He was very knowledgeable on both the food & history of the area. If we planned our trip over, this tour would definitely be part of it again!

Great tour! Very informative

I really enjoyed this tour. It was a great deal for the money. I felt like I was able to learn more about Chinatown than I would have just wandering through it myself. We heard about the history of Chinatown, what it was like growing up in Chinatown, and how people live there now. We were able to see a lot of little stores and the tour guide had lots of fun stories and good information. It is a fairly long tour and seemed to be catered more toward older teenagers and adults.

Our leader Frank took a group of six on a wonderful tour of Chinatown. He was knowledgeable and entertaining. He showed us places in Chinatown we never would have visited or known about on our own, and his history of the area was fascinating. We especially enjoyed our visit to the temple and the art/frame shop, his meanderings through the various back alleys, and his explanation of the architecture. Lunch was also excellent -- although it was promoted as "dim sum" and it was really more standard Cantonese -- but delicious nonetheless. Definitely worthwhile.

Fun Insight on Chinatown

Tea Shop was the best stop for the detailed explanation of the different types of teas and how to prepare them. Would have liked more details at the herbal shop and fortune cookie factory. Lunch was a good variety of foods. Guide was full of stories of Chinatown and a great amount of fun.

We all enjoyed the tour thoroughly. I would recommend a bit more walking around Chinatown. We all appreciated not spending alot of time in stores. Alberta did a great job of telling us where we were stopping and to pick up business cards to return later. I would suggest a little less personal story and a bit more of the history when walking around town. Again, it was very nice and we would do it again.
